I really want one. Anyone had experience with these? What can I expect to pay? What's the best deal for the money? TIA

It all depends on what you expect for speed, battery life, and screen size. I bought DS one for high school graduation recently. In my opinion, the best bang for the buck is the ASUS 1000HE. (Be careful with the last 2 letters, the HA is not the same.) Currently, it's the one with the fastest processor and the longest battery life (9.5 hours). I currently own and LOVE my (pink) Acer Aspire One. I paid $350 6 months ago through Walmart online. It is very quick setup and easy to use. I have MS Office (fulll suite) loaded on it and use it exclusively for all emails, household budgeting, and college work. I am a full time student majoring in English and History so I do a HUGE amount of research and papers. The battery lasts about 90 minutes while I have everything running at once, but I am usually near an outlet so I just plug it in anyway. I could spring for a better battery, but I probably won't.

I will say that while it is plugged into an electrical outlet, it is BLAZINGLY fast. I mean FAST. However, IE runs slow(er) when the computer is running on battery power. I don't know why, but I do know it is not just me. It is still acceptably fast, though.

Two things in particular:
1. Mini PCs are mini, which means the keyboards are small. For me it's a non-issue, I am a violinist with small hands, so I can fit them where they need to be. For my husband with big hands and large fingers, it is a problem. He can't use it without hitting 2 keys at once. It is possible to hook a full size keyboard up to it if needed, but it kind of defeats the whole portability issue.

2. Minis don't come with internal CD/DVD drives. The point is for them to be lightweight, fast, and portable and extra drives work against all three. The Acer Aspire Once has three USB ports, however, so I can hook it up to external drives when I need them.

Like I said, I love mine, don't know how I got along without it before. It even fits on the windowsill in the kitchen so I can look up recipes or have music playing while I cook. It isn't for everyone though. DH won't use mine unless it's the only option. He prefers his hulking Toughbook.
Hope this helps!

I also have an Acer Aspire One...and it is very handy. We paid $299 for it at walmart in June, it has been great so far. My husband has a cell phone with data plan and the tethering option to use it with the computer to use the internet while in the car traveling. We recently took a 4 hour road trip and using his cell phone and a blue tooth adapter I was surfing the net the whole way! Awesome!

after going buying and returning 4 different models. i would go with the dell mini 9 at the dell outlet.

i just bought the asus eee Seashell netbook for my son for $417 shipped from amazon. he is very happy with it.

there are some great deals for the mini 10 (refurbished) at dell outlet. their inventory varies by day.

My son has the Acer Aspire One and really likes it. I borrowed it a couple weeks ago when I traveled to Jamaica (because it's so much smaller and easier to carry than my standard sized laptop, plus it fits in the safe) and it was perfect. I even took my Magicjack and was able to call home for nothing.
The small keyboard takes a little getting used to and I could never use it as my primary computer but for traveling it's perfect.

I have a pearl white acer aspire one. I love it! I don't even use a desktop or full size laptop anymore. It does all I need it for. I have a 6 cell battery-it does protrude a little from it but it's worth the bigger battey life. I got mine on QVC when it was a special. I think I paid about $349 (which included the 6 cell battery, a case & software that included 1 yr. of McAfee security). My DH says it too small for him. But it's perfect for me.

Another recommendation for the Acer Aspire One. I have the 10" with the 6 cell battery. I love it! I don't think I'll ever go back to a regular sized laptop again.

My DD has an Acer Aspire as well and LOVES it!!!! It is very fast and compact. I think I paid around 250 at Staples last Christmas when they were running a sale.
