Best Nausea Medicine

I too got violently ill on Mission Space Orange; we're going on our first cruise this Christmas, and the cruise boards keep saying the ship is so big it's not an issue; but really nervous about motion sickness. If I wear the patch the first few days, does the body adjust to the motion of the ship and stop feeling sick even without meds?
TIA
I can't speak about the patch as I've never used them (or sea wrist bands). I've been on several different cruises and I have never had any problems ON the ships, even without dramamine (and this was before I knew about the ginger). I think it's true, the bigger the ship, the smoother the sail, less or no motion sickness.
Now, I did say I was good ON the ships. My last cruise, although I had no problems on the daily island excursions, it actually took me a few weeks to get my land legs back. I did have to take the dramamine then, on land, with no water in sight.

Of course, everyone is different. Good luck Tia!

I am a big fan of Psi Bands wristbands - they are adjustable so you can get the right amount of pressure. I get sick on boats and in the back seat of cars. Psi Bands have saved my life (and my lunch) on cruises and on many occasions in the backseat of taxis in West Africa.

My daughter and I both do very well at Disney with a combo of taking generic "less-drowsy Dramamine" (meclizine) every 24 hours and wearing sea bands on the rides which could cause issues (eg. Star Tours). This also works great for us when traveling/flying.

I've been trying to read the different methods that some employ in order to not feel sick on rides. I do not get sick in the front of a vehicle, and sometimes not the back, nor do I get sick on straight on roller coasters. I can ride the Tower of Terror (yay!) but not RnR. I can't do anything that goes sideways or has a lot of twists and turns. Body Wars almost did me in. There are several rides I have never been on or haven't been on lately for fear of ruining my day. I have not ridden Space Mountain in a number of years (it seemed to get worse as I got older) and have never been on Star Wars or EE. I really want to do these things so I'm going to break down and try an anti nausea medication.
I've been reading different threads I could bring up, and I've taken Dramamine in the past but it didn't seem to work well. Haven't tried coke syrup (sounds awful - that might make me turn green without even riding anything) and I'm hesitant about the patch (I once tried the patch back in the days when I used to smoke and it began to itch terribly; since I was visiting in NYC I took it off for fear of having to go to the hospital). So, I don't know what to do. Any suggestions would be wonderful! I have scheduled fps for SM, Star Tours, RnR and EE; I really want to ride these. Most of the fps are either before we break mid day or last thing of the evening, just in case.
Thanks!
Dramamine is gonna knock you out.....I could barely make it around the Lagoon....and had to take a nap at the French Pavillion!!LOL Tried ginger gum....really worked! Got me thru Mission Space!

I've tried the bands, the stuff you out behind your ear, the liquid meds, Dramamine of all sorts, etc. What seems to work best is anything with ginger, including the Dramamine with ginger. I doubt it would help much with Star Tours or Space Mountain but most other rides should be fine. I took it at Six Flags Great America and most coasters were fine except the older, rickety ones.

Best "natural" remedies - ginger and peppermint.

Dramamine makes my family sleep, so I can see why it won't work for ride-induced nausea.

For me - when I get motion sickness, it typically stars with headache. MANY times, just taking an ibuprofen or two right before or right after rides that effect me that way can actually prevent motion sickness in the first place.

Those wristband things never worked for me.

i agree.

Those wristband things never worked for me.

Different things work for different people. But with the wrist bands I have found it extremely important that (1) the buttons are in exactly the right place on my wrist, and (2) the bands are tight enough to give a good deal of pressure. I have even had situations where I forgot my bands and I started feeling sick, but once I put them on my stomach settled down within just a few minutes. I also like that I can talk them off and on as needed.

I've used the bracelets and ginger pills. Both have worked but ginger works a bit better.
Same here. The bracelets work for a lot of people but didn't for me or my daughter. I also use ginger, the ginger chews you can find at the health food stores. I like those.

Last trip I made mistake of riding the Harry Potter ride. I barely made it through and the only way I could was by focusing on a screw or something stable on the ride vehicle itself. That also works for the 3D things. Anything else, well, I just haven't tried it. I appreciate all the feedback.

None of the natural/holistic stuff ever worked for me (sea bands, motion-eaze oil, ginger pills/gum) and the OTC drugs like dramamine/meclizine/bonine all knocked me on my butt. The only thing that works for me and allows me to have a normal vacation is the prescription patch (Transdermal Scop). I put it on the night before we depart and change it every 3 days and am good to go!

Ginger pills are the only thing that work for me that doesn't make me sleepy. :) Hopefully you find something that will help you enjoy your vacation

Let me recommend that you try out the medicine you choose before the going to the parks. I have bad motion sickness...I bought non-drowsy Bonnie and Dramine for a cruise. You know how everyone says you don't feel movement on a big ship. Well I did. I took non-drowsy Bonine and slept he whole first day of the cruise. SO don't try a new med right before hitting the park-just in case it does make you drowsy.

Gin-gin candies (come in all sorts of flavors as well as chewy or hard candies), and while it's not for motion sickness, I have a ongoing script for Zofran for nausea that I always have with me.

Another vote for ginger. I do take Bonine--but it isn't always enough. I travel with ginger gum, ginger chews, & lemon ginger tea. All of these can be ordered from Amazon. Mission Space is the only ride that I haven't tried--too many reports of sickness!!

My go-to combo is this:

2 Ginger capsules before we hit the parks (or airplane). Bring along 2 more for later, just in case.
1 drop of Motion Ease essential oil blend behind each ear before the parks (or airplane). Bring to the park just in case I need to reapply.
Sea Bands worn all day

This is a great combo for me, though after SDMT I felt a little wobbly the last time, so I might put on another drop of Motion Ease before riding that one. No problem whatsoever on ToT, Splash, airplane rides, etc. I used to take Dramamine Less-Drowsy, and still take it along for emergency ONLY, but it makes me so tired and grumpy (like... I HAVE to nap in the afternoon... I've been known to fall asleep in American Adventure, Impressions de France......), so I only take it if I absolutely positively have to. I've been using the above combo since 2011, and it's worked great! All items can be found online or at Walmart.

FYI Non-Drowsy Dramamine and Bonine are the same thing. Both are Meclizine. (Regular Dramamine is a different drug, which makes you drowsy.) Meclizine is good for me when going to the parks because one dose lasts all day. regular Dramamine wears off in 4-6 hours.

I take Bonine, but I think it makes me sleepy. OTOH, sleepy is better than nausea.:) I'd also put 2-3 hours of time between meals and the rides that concern you.

All of those holistic methods are definitely worth trying first (as you mentioned you prefer "natural" methods).
If you want to try prescription meds, I second Zofran (ondansetron) ODT (orally dissolving tablet. One 8mg pill dissolves in seconds, and lasts up to 8 hours. Perfectly safe and benign, but is a prescription that needs to be verified by your doctor. We bring it on all of our trips.
Scopolamine patch is also nice: one patch every 3 days. But could have side effects (mild double vision, dry mouth, sedation, etc).

Good luck either way.

We just try not to eat anything just before a crazy ride, and that helps too. Good luck!
