I'm planning our April trip and will be on the dining plan (now that the DVC will allow us to buy into it!!!)

Our first day will be in MGM. We will be arriving late in the morning and doing a Counter Service for lunch, but don't want to skip out to another park for dinner. I have booked Mama Melrose.

Is that good/worth the credits? Don't want to do Brown Derby since we already have some other sig restaurants boodked (Citricos and Yachtsman). I can't see where Prime Time 50's or Sci-Fi are worth the TS credit. Any other choices, or should we consider just doing a Counter service for Dinner, saving the TS for another day?

We hated MM so I can't recommend it to you. Prime Time in my opinion would be better then MM but I would stay away form Sci-Fi for a meal, it's ok for dessert/snacks/drinks. A couple of good places are just a short boat ride away at the Yach/Beach Club and the Boardwalk!

We ate at Sci-Fi last Sept. during the free dining promotion. It was a ton of food, but none of it was very good. I thought that the milkshakes that everyone seems to rave about were pretty bad. The chocolate shake basically tasted like a Frosty, not that Frosty's are bad, just different from what I consider a "good" milkshake. We loved the atmosphere at Sci-Fi though! It might be worthwhile if you were spliting meals there and you just kept it simple by getting burgers, etc.

I'm struggling with the same issue as you for our January trip! I've made an ADR at Mama Melrose as well so I'm interested in what others have to say.

We ate at MM in May and it was not our favorite. Here in CT, good Italian food is plentiful, so MM did not impress us. Our waiter was terrible and we waited quite a long time for food, despite the place being empty. Overall, the food, atmosphere, and wait staff was Olive Garden-ish in our opinion...decent, edible, but nothing I couldn't have gotten close to home. There was nothing jaw dropping fantastic about the place.

As a quick side note...we are not fussy people, or picky eaters, and this was the ONLY table service meal we didn't prefer during our trip.

Good luck with your decisions! We also struggled with finding a one credit table service at MGM that was "worth" using our credits. For our next trip (in FOUR DAYS!!), we're not eating at MGM at all.

It is funny how different people view different things. Two years ago we did the HWV Fantasmic package, we didn't care for the food so much for the price, we aren't big buffet people.

Last year we did Sci Fi for dinner on the plan and it was the least favorite of our meals, good desserts though.

We also tried Mama's for Fantasmic package last year and LOVED it. I think their salads are GREAT, I had two servings, the flatbreads were yummy, I loved my pasta and my husband loved his Chicken Parmesian. Kids had a good meal too. Then to get Fantasmic with no wait was well worth it, definitely the best MGM has to offer on one credit In my oppinion.

My first choice at MGM is always Prime Time, actually it's usually the only place we eat at MGM. The drinks are good, the atmosphere is fun and we like the food. We've never had a bad meal here. I've had the fried chicken, the meatloaf, and the pot roast and liked them all. The desserts there are fabulous!

If it were us, we'd go for 50's. Went last time, and it was one of the highlights of our trip. The atmosphere was so much fun! And, we managed to spend $105 for 3 people, so felt we got good value for our credits.
It's on our "must-do" list from on, but to each their own.

Well, I can't speak about any of the other restaurants fom personal experience, but we really enjoyed our meal at 50's Prime Time. Plenty of good, homey food, great atmosphere, just a lot of fun. We liked it well enough (and I have heard enough bad reviews of most of the other restaurants at MGM) that we are planning on returning next year. We were not, however, impressed with the CS meal we got at MGM (the CS right by the Honey, I Shrunk the Kids playground. Is that Backlot Express?)

Good luck and happy eating!

Hollywood and Vine is 1 credit- is that an OK place? I made res's there

I would suggest Beaches and Cream. The sundaes alone are worth the boat ride. The portions are big enough to split between two.

Where and how long to travel by boat and what restaurants do you recommend instead of MM?

We have ADR at MM the day we plan on seeing Fantasmic. Didn't get package because we hope to use just 2 or 3 credits for 4 people and pay OOP for extras.

The boat from MGM goes to Dolphin/Swan, then Beach Club, then Boardwalk (I think that is the order).

It is about a 10 minute ride to Dolphin/Swan, then shorter to Beach Club and Boardwalk. Then you will have a little walk to the resort and restaurant.

Problem is that you have to wait for a boat as well. Plan on being at the boat launch at least 1/2 hour before your reservation.
