Best hotel and crowd expectations for August.

We are planning a three day trip for Augut 1 - 4th this summer. Any suggestions for hotel and crowds? Also, I am picking up my son at UCLA following his summer program, how far away is the campus from DL? SHould I rent a car or taxi?

UCLA to DLR will be a pretty good hike. I have driven it many times but am not sure of the distance. I would guess it is a good 60 miles. I would rent a car except for the fact that you will not need it at all if you stay close to DLR which you should. That would make me lean towards a cab or some other form of transportation.
