So I know about the movies at Fort Wilderness, watching the boat parade and Wishes from Fort Wilderness (I'm assuming they still do this), what other free activities/experiences/neat things are there to do around WDW? Our trip this summer will be on an extreme budget, so there isn't going to be money for dinners, things like BBB or PL etc... Just wondering what neat little things there are to do.

Disney Springs has had an almost complete makeover...resort hop...ride the monorails...at AKL, walk out and see if the animals are out...also check out the animals there after dark with night vision binoculars

Outside the parks:
For my last two "budget" trips (with a young child) .. Disney Springs (Marketplace) was almost as exciting to the kids (and parents) as the parks. The Lego Store, the toy store, the Disney Store .. etc.

Other free activities:
I always enjoy the boat riding (day or night) .. DHS to Epcot ..or MK to Fort Wilderness.

If you really want to go crazy and go to resorts .. a lot of resorts have free activities in their lobbies but that may be hard to find schedules for unless you are staying there.
Movie nights at resorts .. etc.

Inside the parks:
There are a lot of little shows and "street" entertainment that people often don't see or overlook because they are busy running from one ride to the next or reservation to reservation.

Check out:
Bringing down the flag ceremony in Town Square
Various shows on Main Street and Storybook Circus

What ages are your kids? I am assuming younger since you mentioned no BBB or PL. I don't know what you have done previously, but at MK there is the SOtMK game to play around the park, at Epcot there is the Kidcot stops in each country and Agent P missions, and at AK there is the Wilderness Explorers booklet. These are all free and fun for kids. I second the recommendation to visit AKL and check out the animals. Hidden Mickeys are always fun to spot and you can make a game/competition of it.

The entertainment on the boardwalk in the evenings is a lot of fun as well. Most of them are very talented, and I think they run most nights from around 7pm until 9:30 pm but I'm sure someone who knows the exact time will jump in.

We happened upon a drum circle in a common area in AKL. Fun! They said it happened every night at 6. We were just there looking at the animals.

The entertainment at the Boardwalk at night (my kids loved the magician) and Disney Springs (if they like music and dancing, nighttime is great there too) is really good. These are acts I'd even pay to see. Just be prepared to have to buy ice cream or something :teeth:

Wilderness Explorers at AK was a huge hit with my kindergartener. It took two trips to AK and lots of walking, but he was so proud to finish. I think a good age range is 5-10, but I'm sure it depends on the personality of the kid.

Oh, and also- pick up the Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom cards at MK. The cards are cool (think Pokemon cards with Disney characters), even if you don't play. We didn't open them until we got home, and of we had known how cute they were we'd have gotten more.

The Boardwalk at night is our favorite. Along with the jugglers and magicians, they typically play movies on the village green. Last time we were there, they gave out free bags of popcorn! You can also stroll around the entire Boardwalk and check out the other resorts.

At Ft. W, we also enjoy visiting the stables and just playing on the playground.

Inside the parks, my DS9 loved Wilderness Explorers and loves Sorcerer's of the Magic Kingdom and the Pirate Adventures in MK

There is a nightly presentation about different African cultures given right off of the lobby at AKL every evening. I'm not sure if the drum circle mentioned above is in addition to that or was the presentation the day the PP saw it but the presentation along with the savannas at both the Lodge and the DVC village would made for a nice and free evening.

Glad to hear you are going this summer, I remember your dates were up in the air

Definitely AKL. The Electrical Water Pageant. We had a great time walking around AoA one afternoon, got some great pictures of the kids.

Check out Tri-circle D ranch at Fort Wilderness. You can see the horses up close.

I agree with some of the other posters to head over to Animal Kingdom Lodge and check out the animals there. Don't forget that they have two lodges: Jambo House and Kidani. Both have public spaces where you can view the animals. They have a shuttle that runs back and forth between the two if you don't feel like walking.

I love the Boardwalk area at night. It's all lit up and twinkly. The street performers are pretty entertaining too.

Some of the resorts have marshmallow roasts and movies in the evening. If you are staying on-site you might want to check to see if your resort offers those.

A not-free, but lower priced item would be the miniature golf. We do that just about every time we are down there.

Have a great trip and stay cool!!

I LOVE the Electric Water Pageant for it's vintage synthesized cheesiness!

Also, there is a GREAT freestyle rap group (called Free Daps) at Disney Springs that I absolutely fell in love with. I stopped to watch them while my mom ran to the bathroom, and ended up staying for the rest of the show. Check them out if you can!

Will we be able to get these cards if we don't intend to play the game with them? Do the CMs care? I don't think we'll have time to play since this is our first visit to WDW, but my boys LOVE collectible cards.

We like to mock all the people getting on DME to go home.

Seriously though, our favorite is probably the campfire at Ft Wilderness and just resort hopping. It never ends up being free because we always spend money but it's not like we need tickets or anything.

Kenny the Pirate posts the recreation guides for all Disney resorts each month: http://www.kennythepirate.com/resorts/walt-disney-world-resort-recreation-guides/

They all indicate which activities are free and which are paid. I never realized how many activities there are at AKL - I'm definitely going to be checking these when the January guides are posted!

Most WDW resorts offer the movies, though check on the location within the resort.

A word of caution: If you try to see Wishes from outside MK, you might not be able hear it. (see below)

As for watching Wishes from Ft. Wilderness, a word of warning on the subject....we did this last year. In the holiday season, a fun thing to do - also free- is to visit the guest displays at Ft.W. After exploring the area though, we tried to go back to WL. Our first thought was to walk back, and a CM advised us strongly against it due to (potentially dangerous) wildlife concerns. He told us to take the shuttle bus, so we waited, and waited and waited for (I think) over half an hour.

So we thought to try seeing Wishes form the beach. It would have been okay, but we could not hear it very well. Some very inconsiderate folks were talking loudly over the whole thing. While you maybe luckier than us, all of the viewing locations outside of MK have the show on low volume. If the folks nearby don't are to hear the show, there isn't much to be done, and this is not the first time we've encountered that problem.

Consider ways to eat off WDW property. WDW TS meals are now in the crazy $$$ category. We used to eat on a budget, then went to making quite a few ADR's, but now we are back to avoiding them. I'm not sure how you are defining "no money for meals" - that could mean everything from living off granola bars from home for a week to just not doing V&A's - but we have found a variety of ways to eat better quality offsite for far less than the cost of a WDW meal. Even if you don't have a car, you can eat in the airport for less than WDW.

If you are flying, consider playing around with dates for lower airfare. While MCO is closest, and the only airport with Magic Express, we can often beat MCO prices (plus get a rental car) for less $$.

Last, consider swapping WDW for Universal Studios. Ticket prices are similar, but almost everything else can be done for less $.
