It will be the day of our arrival with 5 kids and 4 adults, straight from airport/hotel dropoff, and I don't know how the kids (ranging from 2-8) will do sitting for a long meal, but would like a decent evening meal at the Studios. December trip.

I'm not big on counter service restaurants in HS so for a sit down with kids in your situation I would pick 50's prime. More homestyle food and it more relaxed in environment.
i'd stay away from brown derby- not overly kid friendly and quieter
I'd stay away from mama melrose- can be slow to get into and staff can be slow not a plus for kids that aren't in the position to sit for a long time and wait.
Scifi I'm neutral with. Not the best food but not bad, dark, movie clips could keep the kids occupied for a bit but once they start repeating they'll be over it.

If you want to try a CS, I suggest Fairfax Fare for some pretty good BBQ. If you're headed there for Fantasmic, it's right there on Sunset Blvd where you need to be to get in line.

Another "ok" spot is Pizza Planet....the same pizza you'll get at all counter service, but the kids will like the atmosphere. This is over near Muppets 3D which is a great show for everyone!
