Best cheese steaks in Philly??

I was just at Pat and I was the tourist there... so dont think so pats was better then geno plus you get to watch real live full contact street ball.

good luck parking lol

I would go to Barry's in Roxborough. I don't think Dalessandros is as good as it used to be. Went down hill with the new owners.

Another option that nobody mentioned is the gut trucks. Also Reading Terminal Market has a great Philly cheese steak place. Forget the name of it but just look for the line. Of course Geno's and Pat's are supposed to be the famous places. In my experience, cheese steak subs are served with either American or Provolone. I like mine with Provolone and marinara sauce and green peppers and onions. It doesn't mean it is a wrong way to eat it-just the way that I like it. Some people argue that cheese whiz is the original way to go but I think that is only at carnivals and such. Further south in PA, our sandwiches come with lettuce, tomato and mayo, but I don't like that. By the way, Pat's is thicker steaks where some of the others have the finely chopped steaks which I prefer. Also if you do order with the lingo "Whiz wit" it could come off as really funny if you aren't from around Philadelphia. I am from PA but outside of Philly and so I don't even order that way. I just say Provolone with onions and that works fine.

you will be quite a distance from Center City, and parking will not be easy. Do as others have suggested, ask a student and eat near Villanova. Some of the best sandwiches come from the little corner shops.

I don't know any Philadelphians who order cheesesteaks with Cheese Whiz. Blech.

From St. Joe's, you won't be that far from Dalessandros, which is in Roxborough/Northwest Philadelphia. You should be able to find street parking.

I don't know any philadelphians that order with whiz either, and I'm a native, born and raised and still live here. My DH is from rural PA and he orders his with Whiz, but again, he's not from here.

I'm an "american wit", unless I'm at Pats then I'm an "American wit-out" because they overload the onions. I don't eat at Genos, because I just don't.

Never been to Dalessandros but they do have a good reputation, so I would try it out. One day I'll get my rear out there and try it. But these days I'd much rather have a roast pork with sharp provolone than a cheese steak.

Dalessandros is very good and not very far from StJoe's, but I agree with the person who said its not as good as previous owners. With that said I pass there a lot and its very popular. I know people who drive 45 minutes or more bc they love the steaks. Barry's is good just not as well known. I'm sure the SJU students will know about Dallesandros. Good Luck with the visits, both Universities are outstanding. :thumbsup2 Enjoy

I used to live in Roxborough and loved the Cheesesteaks (american with onions and hots) from Dalessandros. It's sad to hear that they've gone downhill!

No where near St. Joe's but we loooove Steve's Prince of Steaks on Bustleton in the Northeast....

Anybody know anything about Larry's?
St Joe's gives a parking pass when you visit...and it is across the street
Marionette suggested it also
Just thought maybe it would be easier as car would be on campus already

Thanks for everyone's replies. I have 2 hrs. between the campus visits so wouldn't be able to take a long ride or train anywhere.

Larry's isn't bad and they make a decent cheese steak. I use to go there many of nights when I went to St. Joe's.

Another option is there is a Tony Luke's in the Acme Grocery store right in Bryn Mawr (which is right in between SJU and Nova).
