I am taking my son to an college tour at St Joe's.
Where would you recommend to grab lunch..a good Philly cheese steak..where parking wouldn't be an issue..don't want to pay to put car in a garage! Thanks!!

St. Joe's is not in Center City. It's closer to the Main Line and the inner ring suburbs of Montgomery and Delaware Counties. Parking is not as bad as it is in Center City but you're not going to want to venture too far from campus toward the Cobbs Creek section of town. Larry's on 54th St. does a decent Philly cheese steak but ask for recommendations during the campus tour. The students all know where to find the best and closest places.

When you order your cheese steak, be sure to order it with "whiz" cheese. Its Cheese whiz and that is the original philly cheese steak!

Big debate over the type of cheese that should be used. Some of us prefer a good provolone instead. Just remember that a cheese steak "wid" has grilled onions on it. If you want it without onions, order a cheese steak "widdout". And if you want to go easier on the fat, get a chicken cheese steak. :)

Thanks for the info about the cheese :)
Decided we will also visit Villanova and will eat lunch in between the school visits. Are going to VU 1st so will ask the student giving tour for a suggestion
On where to go

After seeing Nova's campus, you're not going to want to visit St. Joe's!

Go Wildcats!!! :cheer2:

My DD goes to college in Center City and in all of my visits I have yet to get a cheesesteak lol. Mainly BECAUSE of parking not being in and out and traffic. You will be going way out of your way to venture into Center City area between touring St. Joe's and Villanova. That said, if you have some spare time you can take the commuter train from St. Joe's to the Suburban Station in Center City and take a taxi from there. Jim's, Tony Luke's, and Pat's are the names I have heard most frequently recommended. If you still want to drive into the city I have driven by Tony Luke's on East Oregon Ave in South Philly (off of I90) and I believe there was parking there IIRC.

I have not been to St. Joe's but the Villanova campus is absolutely breathtaking. Just gorgeous. Enjoy your visit!

Tony Luke's. (off I-95). But it is a ways from Villanova and St. Joe's campus. I think you are right to ask the student guides for a suggestion near those campuses. Those kids know their junk food!

Anybody know anything about Larry's?
St Joe's gives a parking pass when you visit...and it is across the street
Marionette suggested it also
Just thought maybe it would be easier as car would be on campus already

Thanks for everyone's replies. I have 2 hrs. between the campus visits so wouldn't be able to take a long ride or train anywhere.

We like Pat's; I'm an american wit girl, my DH likes his whiz wit. Paired with a birch beer and you're good to go!

Mmmmm...I don't eat red meat anymore. There are very few things I miss red meatwise.

But, a good ol' cheese steak is definitely on the list.

We went to Tony Luke's last year and I was not impressed.

The steak sandwich was small and didn't have much meat for the price they charged.

I've had better tasting Philly cheese steak sandwiches here in NJ.

I have never been to Tony Luke's, but I am originally from Philly and visited Pat's for the first time and feel like Pat's and Gino's have become such tourist traps that the cheesesteaks are not even good. You can get a much better cheesesteak at a little neighborhood place. Which you will easily find near the campuses. My point is just that I don't think that you should go out of your way to visit Pat's.

I'm from Philadelphia and the "original" cheesesteak is NOT with whiz, it's with american cheese, however, there are a ton of people who do eat whiz cheesesteaks.

Jim's at 4th and South are really good. There is a place on Frankford Ave that was called Chink's up until a month ago, they're now called Joe's. They have great sandwiches as well.

DO NOT GO TO PAT's OR GENO's. That is not a good steak sandwich, that is a tourist trap.

I don't know any Philadelphians who order cheesesteaks with Cheese Whiz. Blech.

From St. Joe's, you won't be that far from Dalessandros, which is in Roxborough/Northwest Philadelphia. You should be able to find street parking.

Head to Reading Terminal Market and go to DiNics Roast Pork. You will have nothing better than the roast pork with broccoli rabe. Better than the cheese steak.

For cheese steaks go to Johns Roast Pork on Snyder Ave. Get there early they are open till 3pm
