is there even a safe Bug repellant for little ones?

Do you think We will need any in Orlando this week/next?

thanks for your help

Burts Bees. It has no chemicals in it at all. We use it all the time and it works better than anything else we have ever used. It smells like Lemon Pledge and it is an oil. One bottle lasts forever. It is not greasy either. We have children with mosquito allergies and this works the best.

I've used citronella oil and works pretty well for mosquitoes in Michigan' summer though i sometimes use a Glade "family" spray. Citronella is in outdoor candles & the natural oil ingredient present in most insect sprays --though Repellants usually add the DDT chemical in sprays.

I think DDT is not recommended for kids under 2 and i would avoid it in any kids whenever possible. Kind of a toss up -- taking the risk of mosquitoes/West Nile Virus/etc. where we live or the hazards of DDT chemical. Plain citronella oil can be found in health food/natural stores. Maybe that's an ingredient in Burts bees??

Just clarifying - I think you mean DEET. DDT is a pesticide that was once used on crops (and has since been banned).

Avon Skin So Soft Bug Guard :thumbsup2

You can get it in either a lotion, pump spray or aerosol spray and with the built-in sunscreen right from the website. They have one that goes on blue and dries clear which my almost 4yo likes. It works well and is also DEET free, safe for kids, plus I can us it even with my sensitve skin. :)

Yes-i was meaning DEET.
I would hope there are no DDT sprays for personal use. Hee, hee. I make some pretyy silly mistakes typing/thinking...

When i hear DDT, can't help but think of that Joni Mitchell song
"Hey farmer farmer, put away that DDT now/Give me spots on my apples but leave me the birds and the bees/ Pleeease"

Where do you get Burt's Bee's? I have never heard of it.

*Everyone should consult their own pediatrician for the best advice on how to care for their children. My pediatrician's advice might not be the best for your child.*

Last week I purchased SEVERAL different types of insect repellant and took the entire bag to my pediatrician. He said that the "natural" repellants aren't worth the money and don't offer much protection. He said that children 1 and older can use DEET if it the content is under 10% and told me to spray it into my hands and apply it just to their exposed skin, OTHER than their face and hands. Do not apply under clothing. They should also be washed when finished with outdoor activities. He also said not to use a SFP and insect repellant combined product b/c the SPF needs to be reapplied more frequently than the repellant.

So they all went back and I kept a Skinsations/Cutter product that had 7% DEET in it. It has been working well.

Just be sure to use care and follow the instructions on the bottle.

Bug free, way to be! :cool1:

Mosquitoes love me and my son (4). I use Off Family care. It works good and only has 5% DEET. The avon skin so soft has never worked for me.:)

thanks all for your replies.

I have used Burt's Bees I loved it! It was many years ago & the packaging was weird & leaked, but I loved the smell. I used it on a central america jungle/beach trip. It worked VERY well.

I just have not seen it for years I'll have to look for it.

I hesitate using anything with deet on myself & esp my little grandchildren.
But good advice on applying by using hands to wipe the spray.

I just picked up a new product at Wal-Mart over the weekend. It's called Skeeter. It has 12 citronella patches. It claims you can stick on any surface and its supposed to keep away mosquitoes, flies, and gnats. I haven't tried it yet. I thought it would be nice to stick on a stroller so I don't have to spray anything on my DD's skin. No idea if it actually works, though...:confused3

I bought a can of off (family safe.....etc) for our trip last week (11 - 19th).

but as to your second question, I never took the lid off of the can, and never saw any bugs that I was concerned about (and I have a major mosquito bite reaction).

For the 2nd year I have ordered bug patches from QVC. You can put on anywhere on your clothes and they last for hours. My son was ALWAYS getting bit up and now only gets bit when we doesnot have his patch on. They are the best product! HTH!!

I just got some spray at Whole foods called Bite Blocker. It's Deet Free and works better than anything on the market with deet. You can read about it on Consumer Reports. I did a bunch of research online before purchasing. I have now used it and I love it! Safe for the whole family (I have a 16 month old little boy)!

I personally would not use anything with Deet in it. Our Ped even said to stay away from any Deet products. I still stand by Burts Bees. It worked better for us than anything we have ever used.

Thanks again for all replies & suggestions
we leave Early thurs!:cool1:

Fwiw, I've used the Burt's Bees stuff, and it works for light amounts of mosquitos. But, if we were in an area with lots of mosquitos, we got bitten up, and had to use stuff with DEET. My bottle of BB is almost out, and I haven't seen it anywhere near me - not sure if I will replace it or not.

Where do you get this??

Also, has anyone tried the bracelets. I don't know who they are made by but they are in CVS's ad this week for 1.99.
