We will want to use the scooter for extra storage of non valuable items. I had thought about using a backpack on the back but if am worried people might steal it, and wondering if there is a better solution? I am planning on sewing some items for the trip I MIGHT be able to sew a simple bag, or buy one.

Thinking if I use a regular backpack perhaps I could use cable ties or something else to secure it?

1) Wrap a chain-lock from the backpack armstraps through/around the frame of the scooter.
. . . good when sitting still in lines
. . . good when driving through parks
2) But, do not leave it on the scooter during rides.
3) NEVER leave anything in a scooter or stroller, as it is a golden opportunity for theft.

We leave things in the stroller, as we can't possibly carry all diapers, extra clothes, book etc. On rides. We don't leave anyhitng that isn't easily replaceable. We will be without diapers this time but will be leaving items in the strolelr and scooter. The bike lock is a good idea!

Side note I have a relative who went to WDW and left everything in and on their stroller...phones, cameras, tickets (four years ago) unbelievably lucky they didn't have anyhitng stolen...such idiots!

@ammag Do you have a trip report up? If so, may I have the link? :D

I think the best way to go about the bag making is to personalize it with a monogram or a name, that will cut down on the number of people interested in taking it I believe. Simplicity has a wheelchair/scooter bag pattern, but in truth probably more effective to just make your own pattern. Do you know the dimensions of the scooter?

I found this board on someone's Pinterest about bags for scooters/chairs... https://www.pinterest.com/sboriack/wheelchair-and-scooter-caddies/ Good luck! :goodvibes

If you do a search, you will find plenty of posts of people who were not as lucky as your relatives. I would just use cable ties over a chain, and I don't think there would be any chance of the bag being taken. However, people could still open it and take items out. As long as you do not leave anything you can't live without, you should be fine. :) We have left items many times, but just wanted you to know not everyone is so lucky.

Oh I know, it's seriously things like water bottle, sunscreen, granola bars.extra shirt not a big deal

I like to carry all that stuff in my scooter too, I use the little basket on front but if you have more stuff you can get a bigger basket that fits on the back of the scooter, most rental places have them available as an add on to your rental.

I use a backpack sometimes for the stuff I want to keep closer, you can hang it over your seat and then take it with you when you leave the scooter. You can use something you already have, a cheap one from a big box store, or even get one made for scooters (do a web search for 'mobility scooter backpacks' to see several).

Have Fun!

Thanks! We are there 10 days so the basket rental would cost $50 from most rental companies I believe, too much :)

I am led to believe that a plastic grocery bag (not a Disney or Universal or Sea World shopping bag which someone may think contains souvenirs) would be less likely to be disturbed compared with a back pack. Use two (double layer bagging) to reduce the chance of tearing or breakage.

a lot of people use regular backpacks and just bring it with them when they leave the scooter.

If you are bringing the scooter with you into lines, you will usually have the scooter until boarding the attraction. I used to worry about DD's backpack on her wheelchair, but don't usually now. In all the times we've left it, we've never seen any evidence that it was disturbed or moved.
We don't have anything of great value in it, but since the wheelchair is parked inside the attraction, people walking by it are mostly looking for how to get out of the attraction and most don't even 'see' the mobility device.
Even if they do, they don't know who it belongs to, so would be taking a chance that the owner might be right behind them.
For shows, you will usually bring the scooter right in and sit on it during the show.

A plastic grocery bag would be a poor choice. For one thing, the handles would not fit well on the frame of the scooter to hold the bag in place.
If the handles are used as 'straps' to hold it on, they would also hold the bag open. That would make it more likely for someone to pick something out of the open bag or even for things to fall out of the bag. Because it's not at all secure, it would be easier for anyone to remove something from it than a backpack or other bag.
Even a doubled plastic shopping bag would be likely to tear or break, leaving nothing to contain your belongings. And, there is nothing about a grocery bag that would make it less likely to be removed from the scooter and stolen. In fact, it might be easier for a thief to take; they could just put it inside of their own bag and thrown it away later after they remove anything of value.( much easier to hide than a stolen backpack).

Plus, one thing people don't think about if their bags are left outside is birds and squirrels. People have posted pictures online of birds and squirrels going into bags on strollers to get at food. At least if you have a backpack or other closed bag, it makes it a bit more difficult for animals to get in.

We have been to WDW over 15 times with a wheelchair and have never had anything stolen out of the bag on the back or had the bag taken. I usually leave it right on the wheelchair. The only time I take it with us on a ride is if I have my money and/or drivers license and cameras in it. Cargo shorts/pants work great for that stuff, but sometimes I don't wear them. Always take the camera/video with me on rides.

i wonder if someone makes a clear plastic backpack, with a heavier plastic that wouldn't rip. That way, anyone could see that the contents are non-valuable items.

Okay, just searched and found lots of Amazon, one for only $10.50. i might get one for my scooter when we go next,.

I have a white canvas Disney bag that I got years ago as one of the spend this much get that cheap deals that I use. The handles on it are long enough to fit over the steering column and it sits on the floorboard of the scooter between my feet. I use it for snacks, rain ponchos, etc--things that I am not going to get too upset if they get stolen. Because it isn't exactly easy to grab and go, I have not had it taken---but valuables like my phone and camera go in my fanny pack so that no one is tempted to take them!

I read on another forum that the back baskets are causing problems with the ability to secure ECVs in the buses.

Most of the buses now have a restraint system called Q Pod, which can't accommodate the ECVs with back baskets.
If you have a back basket, you may have to wait for one of the few buses that have not had the Q Pod installed yet.

In case you are curious about the Q pod, this link tells about it and includes some pictures.
http://www.qstraint.com/en_na/products/transit-solutions/qpod

The wheelchair or ECV needs to be placed far to the back of the 'pod' to be restrained properly. A rear basket interferes with being able to place it far enough back to do the restraint.
