Marsha, I checked a couple of places and came up with the same price for a 7 day cruise to Bermuda in July. And yes, it has to be July (I swear the most expensive month I saw) because that is when his birthday is (yep a youngin' he is... but then again so am I at only 26). I am not sure if I could do this or not, but I might be willing to do a 3 or 4 night cruise but most of those sail out of Florida and not NY.

If I were like you and able to spend the day just lazing by the pool and relaxing like that, I'd be there in a heart beat. I tried laying by the pool on Sunday and only lasted an hour or so  :p

My biggest hope right now is that my sister will say NO and that we'll have to go searching somewhere else :teeth: Oh and my brother wants this to be a surprise. That we bring it up to him on his birthday this year and have a few options for him to choose from. I need to get cracking on the good other options or a cruise will be it

I vote for family intervention!
LOL. Good one!

Maybe a little birdy (you) can put a bug in her ear about veto power.

Is Bermuda the destination of choice or is NY harbor the harbor of choice? Lots of 3/4 day cruises leave out of Tampa/St. Pete. Or heck...let them go for a week and then meet up with your dad and go to WDW.

There are some weekend cruises to nowhere out of NYC.

Was this cruise idea your brother's alone? Has anyone ever asked your Dad if he even likes a cruise? You could do that without spoiling the surprise. Even ask him in passing what his dream family vacation would be. That could be worked into a coversation somewhere I think.

I think I am going to talk to my sister about this more. I had a small conversation about it with my sister and she didn't think she could afford a big trip like that.

Both Bermuda and NY are the choices for my brother. He really wants to leave out of NY more so than going to Bermuda and he didn't want a cruise to nowhere. It's easy for him since he lives in NJ to get to NY, but the rest of us either have to drive or fly out there.

Diane, it was my brother's idea to do a family trip. I thought that was great. It then was his idea to only look at cruises. I guess after my brother came back from his last cruise, my dad had said to him that he might like to try a cruise some day. I don't know if he really would or if he said that to add to the cruise conversation. Truthfully don't know. I think sometime soon, I will be calling my dad to bring this all up in a round about way that won't give away what we are up to.

Elaine - good news!!!! You may not even be able to get a room at this late dats. Bermuda cruises fill up fast, because they are not all year round. Bermuda is off the coast of Noth Carolina, so the prime tourist season is summer, just like the NC beaches. And that's why yhey are 7 nights, it does take a day or 2 to get there, then you dock for 3 nights, then sail back.

I also just realized what this really is - It's all about your brother, him being in control, and trying to guilt everyone else into doing what he wants. I still say that you need to point out that a "family" trip is just that. Since his wife has refused to participate in prior "family" trips, and you feel about cruising as she feels about WDW, this little excursion doesn't fit in the "family vacation" category. Which cruise line is he looking at?

This is the type of plan that should have been being worked on for a lot longer than June 4th!

I say call out the angels, will don our uniforms and kick your brothers and you SILs butt into next week!

I think Elaine said this was to be for NEXT year.

Unfortunately, there is PLENTY of time for that! I still think you can make a family vote out of it. If both you and your sister vote "no" to the cruise, what can he possibly do?

I don't know if this fits into the scheme of things but....

It's cheaper for your brother to leave out of NYC than to fly to Orlando.

And...it's cheaper for you to go to WDW because you have annual passes.

Perhaps both of you are seeing the hundreds spent (on APs or expensive cruises) as not how you want to spend the money...

You may have to both compromise.

I hope I'm not being too forward by suggesting this. I didn't think of the money angle of it at first til you brought up your sister.

Maybe I ought to push camping in Canada
That sounds good to me!!!:) We've got some beautiful spots up here!

It seems to me that a daughter's voice ought to have more say that a DIL's when it comes to planning a FAMILY trip for Dad. You've been in the family a lot longer than she has!;)

LOL!!!!!!!! Alan!!!! Good thing I didn't have anything to drink in my mouth when I read that! It would be all over my computer screen!

Yes, we have just over a month to figure out where we want to go for next year (he'll be 59 this year). I sent an e-mail off to my sister to see what she thinks would be a good idea as I know money is more of an issue for her than for me. I do know that Luis will not go for footing most of the bill for my sister & her DH though. Acutally he just called and said he is putting a foot down on the amount my brother is suggesting.

Marsha, no specific cruise line yet... just looking around I guess. Or at least he hasn't mentioned one. Do you have any you like better than others?

Gina, you are right someone needs to give. Truthfully as much as I like WDW, I would never suggest it as a possibility because I know it won't fly. It is something my dad, sister & I will do someday together just because we want to go :) I know someone has to give... I can give in to a shorter cruise but more than that and my DH won't agree to spending that kind of money on one.

Kathy, good point... I know my brother is trying to be a good son and wife. Oh and I should have said that my brother already nixed the camping too (not sure why). I did suggest that one and he didn't like it at all.

LOL Alan :teeth: I can see that one now!!!!!

I'll pm you a link to my cruise agent. They specialize in Carnival and get excellent discounts.

Who I like - it depends. Carnival, younger crowd (to me, lol) and lots of fun party atmosphere on the 3/4 nights. DS went on 7 nights and found it boring, he is also 26 and been on several cruises. The food is great tho.

Royal Carribean - late 30s to 50s although they have all ages, tons of activities, good food, we did 3 nights for less than a grand for 2, and just did nothing.

Holland America - only went to Alaska, elderly crowd, but that is to be expected in Alaska. It is a fabulous cruise, everyone shold go to Alaska once.

Dinsey - Hated it, except for Castaway Cay and Hercules show and 102 Dalmations movie. Food SUCKED, no worry of gaining weight on that one!

Several other lines I have sailed on are no longer out there, so they don't count. Going on a cruise is a lot like buying a house. You need to decide where you want to go, then you need to match the places up with who goes there. Then you narrow it down on to ship layout, activities, etc. If I was going to Bermuda, I would have to do all that. I probably would not go there, tho. I have seen it on the travel Channel and Food TV, but I don't play golf or tennis, and for that money, I can sail elsewhere or go to see Mickey, or any number of other things!

Alan, I believe you left out the word "beautiful" in describing us...:teeth:

Elaine, I am sorry to hear about the dilemma you are having over your dad's present. You are taking into consideration your SIL's feelings about WDW, but it doesn't seem as if your brother is taking into consideration your feelings about cruises. Is there any location that your dad would like to visit, such as Niagara Falls, that you could all go and do things together? I am sure even if your dad would want to go on a cruise someday, he would be just as pleased to be anywhere with his whole family.

uhhhmmm...no actually Alan...it's BREATHTAKINGLY BEAUTIFUL

and how much would you pay per view on that???? LOL

I personally would NEVER spend money on something treating the dear angels I respect as objects.

However, if the BREATHTAKINGLY BEAUTIFUL BROADS are also BODACIOUSLY BOUNTIFUL....:p

If the thong fits....
