Bermuda cruise - second thoughts

I'm starting to have real doubts about our Bermuda cruise in late October. I'm very susceptible to sea sickness but with bonine have never had problems on previous Disney cruises to the Caribbean or Alaska (I can't use the scopaline patches). However, several friends have told me that sailing out of New York is a completely different animal and the seas will be very rough. I don't want to be miserable the whole trip and am considering switching our itinerary to a Bahamas or Caribbean cruise if available. I'd love any thoughts from those who've sailed out of New York.

I have sailed out of New York to Bermuda. It was many years ago, not on Disney, Norwegian. Small ship, in July. I don't want to discourage you, but it was rough- all the way out and back. Many were seasick. Sometimes my husband and I were the only ones at dinner and breakfast at our table for 8. Our tablemates were just too sick. That being said, my parents took the same cruise in May the following year, sea as smooth as glass. You just never know with the Atlantic. I have no real good advice, because you can't predict what the ocean will do, but follow your instinct. If you feel you won't be happy, change things. I will say that Bermuda is one of my favorite places to vacation, just beautiful. I hope you can make it there. Good luck with your decision.

Have never been to Bermuda but we were on the dream on January 2nd-5th when that really nasty cold snap came deep into the south. The high winds created 18 foot seas in the straight of Florida, and the ship had serious movement from the moment we left Canaveral. One of our travel partners has been on 14 cruises including trans Atlantic’s and they said it was the worste ship rocking they had ever experienced. Sometimes the weather matters more than the destination.

We sailed to Bermuda on another cruise line several years ago and it was a little choppy going out of NY. I always take Bonine, so the seas didn't affect me at all, but DH was surprised that he felt woozie for a couple of hours because he usually doesn't get seasick. I would suggest taking the highest dose of Bonine for sailing in and out of NY, and then taper the dose down if the rest of the way to Bermuda is calmer. Good luck! We loved Bermuda! Have a great cruise! :)

Two years ago I sailed out of NY and went north and it was perfectly calm. This year, I sailed out of NY (in late November) and the seas were rough going south, but perfectly smooth coming back North (near NY).

Generally, the later in the season, the worst the seas are is what I've heard, but obviously one of my cruises disproved that theory. I haven't actually booked Bermuda yet (waiting for school schedule to be released), but I will probably be doing one this fall.

I will definitely be giving my son something for seasickness (he was pretty sick on the November cruise).

We sailed out of NJ to Bermuda in July on a different line and didn't notice much in the way of rough seas. My biggest concern would be the cool weather in late October. The beaches in Bermuda are great - I wouldn't want to miss them because it was to cold.

Sailed out of NY in mid-October. I didn’t think it was that bad. My protocol is wearing sea bands and taking ginger capsules as I cannot tolerate the patch or Bonine.

Good luck!

This. I didn't get sick but our friends' daughter did. She was so happy to dock and overnight it in Bermuda. We sailed June 19 that year IIRC and it was a fluke chilly & rainy day in NY and quite windy in Bermuda. One nice day at sea going to Bermuda but rainy the whole way back. You never know. Generally, the north Atlantic is rougher than the Caribbean. Follow your heart. :goodvibes

We sailed from NY on Anthem of the Seas end of May and had no rough sees at all the first 2 days. Last day we did due to a storm approaching the NY area.

We sailed out of NYC to Canada and it was our worst bad sea experience yet HOWEVER it was due to a major hurricane that was occurring south of us on the east coast. We had one horrible night but then after that, it was smooth sailing. We were all fine with Bonine though. We are going to Bermuda out of NY this time around and hoping for OK seas but bringing sea bands and bonine with us and just hoping for the best!

Woh, ok. We were supposed to go to the Bermuda from NYC in October but now I'm second guessing it too...

Bermuda cruises are super expensive because of the destination. Can't imagine having bad weather while we are there. Would be so pissed/disappointed!

We sailed out of NY several years to Bermuda on a different line. It was awful seas but we actually sailed to race in front of a tropical storm. We sailed in September. We canceled the DCL Bermuda cruise we had booked because I am afraid it is going to be too cold in October. DCL is a huge premium over other cruise lines especially in October that it didn't seem worth the risk.

We are booked for late October.

I check the weather the same week this past year and it was in the mid to high 70’s. With water temps around 77. I think that’s pretty nice.

This week it’s 66- 71. I think that’s pretty comfy too.

DH and me were there 15 years ago in early June, air temp was about 78-82 and the water was around 78. The water felt a little cool when you first went in but it got nice fast.

Choppy seas I am willing to deal with to get to Bermuda. We sailed out of PC after a hurricane a few years back in August. Now that was Fun! Lol

Hurricane Sandy was in late October. Chances are slim you'll have a hurricane during your cruise, but it does happen.

Lived through Sandy here at the Jersey Shore. And a week later that year we had 14 inches of snow. It’s all a crap shoot!

Hoping for the best, thanks.

We sailed from Baltimore (okay, not quite New York, but it can't be that different) to Bermuda once in early August. RCCL Enchantment of the Seas, roughly the same size as Magic. This was five years ago, but I don't remember the trip being particularly rough. By comparison, we sailed on Magic from Dover down the Iberian Peninsula a couple of years ago; the trip across the English Channel was rough, and I certainly remember it. No doubt it can be rough out of New York, but I don't think you should assume it necessarily will be.

The beaches in Bermuda are amazing, by the way, and the island itself is very nice and easy to get around. Hmm. Maybe it's time for me to go back. :)
