Berlitz' Review of DCL Magic

Here are excerpts of Berlitz' review of dining on the Disney Magic:

Dining:

"the lunch menu is pitiful" (reference is to lunch in the dining rooms)

"The noise level in all three dining rooms is extremely high."

"Scoops ...opens too infrequently."

"Pinnochio's serves inedible pizza and sandwiches."

Palo - "the only decent food aboard this ship."

"Overall the food has improved since the ship was first introduced and is now more attractively presented, although there are still few green vegetables."

"The food product and delivery has improved but falls short of less expensive cruise products."

We've cruised other line's large ships and really never expected more than "banquet / wedding chicken" food. We expect more of the same with DCL. Will we be disappointed?

There is definitely room for improvement, but I wouldn't call the lunch menu pitiful.

"The noise level in all three dining rooms is extremely high."

Yup, there are lots of kids and the atmosphere is very relaxed/casual.

"Scoops ...opens too infrequently."

I definitely agree with this line.

"Pinnochio's serves inedible pizza and sandwiches."

Some people brag about the pizza (my kids like it) - I haven't tried it.

Palo - "the only decent food aboard this ship."

Palo is most definitely the best food on the ship.

"Overall the food has improved since the ship was first introduced and is now more attractively presented, although there are still few green vegetables."

When I cruise, green veggies are the least on my list of things I want to think about. :)

"The food product and delivery has improved but falls short of less expensive cruise products."

Less expensive cruise products? I take that to mean cruise lines? Can't compare that one - it's been too long since we cruised another line.

I don't think for a second you would be disappointed with DCL, especially if it's compared to banquet/wedding chicken. On 3 cruises, I've been happy with the food choices, preparations, and to tell you the truth I don't really put much thought into presentation - though I love the plates in Animators.

I cruised the Wonder 2 years ago and just returned from Holland America's Zuiderdam.

The food on Zuiderdam was *much* better than on Wonder, and I vastly prefer the Wonder's. Frankly, five courses of really good food causes more trouble than I want.

The food on Wonder was good enough, and I didn't gain nearly the weight I did on Zuiderdam. Sure, I should have more control than that; and I almost never cleaned my plate. Five courses of really good food was simply too much, even when I skipped a course. I would rather get to try every course offered and not leave a size larger.

So, yes, Zuiderdam's food was better -- but I prefered Wonder's.

what does Berlitz know anyway? ....don't they produce foreign language tapes?

In my opinion, the food on the wonder was much better than the food we had this past summer on RCCL Radiance of the Seas. The lunch buffet is probably my least favorite, but it still isn't bad food. I like the pizza at Pinocchio's. I thought they did a good job at lunch on the Magic, although the choices were somewhat limited.

You won't be disappointed with the food aboard the Magic - period.

alexandrew - lol!

"The noise level in all three dining rooms is extremely high."

What did you say?

"Pinnochio's serves inedible pizza and sandwiches."

All pizza outside New York is inedible...

Will we be disappointed?

Only if you're lying when you say, "We expect more of the same with DCL"...

"Scoops ...opens too infrequently."

The word "infrequently" is interesting. There is an old Myron Cohen (sp?) joke. This is better if you imagine the people talking with thick Jewish accents.

Heimy, a widower, meets Gladys, a widow. They take a liking to one another and start to make plans to live together (in order to save money). But first, Gladys has a few questions.

Gladys: Do you drink?

Heimy: No. Well, only on the high holy days.

Gladys: Do you smoke?

Heimy: No. Well, I used to but oy vey its gotten so expensive.

Gladys: And sex?

Heimy: Oh, infrequently.

Gladys: Is that one word, or two?...

BD...that is one of my favorite Myron Cohen jokes!

You are correct about the pizza. After years of searching, I finally found a pretty good pizza in Charleston AND on my last trip to Panama City Beach my DS took me to a new Pizza place owned and run by transplanted New Yorkers. It was GREAT!

I have to wonder how long ago the review was written?

I think it's possible to be dissapointed with a food item or MAYBE a meal, but with the food in general...I don't think so.

"the lunch menu is pitiful" (reference is to lunch in the dining rooms)
So what, after the first day you really don't need lunch, with the great breakfast buffett and wonderful dinners, all you need for lunch is a chocolate chip cookie or two, a bowl of ice cream and if there's room, some of the fresh fruit - all from Scoops!

After 3 days, I start skipping the above for lunch!

I think the food is fabulous, even the pizza! My favorites were the chocolate desserts....but everything was yummy! Unless you are use to eating every dinner at Morton's Steakhouse, or Crickets, I think you will be very happy with your meals.:D

RellingTwin,
Where's the good pizza in Charleston? Is it worth the drive from Columbia?

Wow--this transplanted northerner, who recently travelled 900 miles to worship at Pepe's in New Haven, CT (sorry New Yorkers, my parents are from Brooklyn but the world's best pizza is in New Haven) has been going to PCB since '91 with his Alabama DW and has never enjoyed the pizza in the redneck riviera. Would love to know where.

Re: Berlitz--all I know is what I read on this thread, and it is clear to me that Berlitz missed the whole idea of the Disney Cruise. Food was fine. enjoyable, wonderful on the Wonder and Magic, and Berlitz sounds like they would be as welcome on my cruise as the Norwalk Virus. You want bad cruise food? Go on the Nordic Empress, RCCL's low-end ship, where I unfortunately had my first cruise.

If Disney served the same kind of food that they did on Holland America, my kids would starve. My daughter went on an Alaska trip with her grandmother in 2002 and she ordered grilled cheese every night. A group of 10 of us were on the Magic this past June and came away from the trip stuffed. When you are a family with young kids, anything other than McDonald's is gourmet to us. Who cares about presentation. I'm eating the food, not taking pictures of it.

ThreeCircles, I was eating leftover pizza from Everybody's Pizza at Emory Village in Atlanta when I saw your post. I moused over your link to see it was a link for Pizza Hut... I nearly spit my pizza all over my screen. Best pizza? Right! LOL!

Well Dave, I'm sure the Pizza Hut pizza was better than what my DW fixed us tonight. My DW bought one of those pizza kits from a school fund raiser the other day. Well DW put the pizza in the oven got the cheese on the top a nice golden color, took the pizza out of the oven, and called me to come out into the kitchen to slice it. Personally, I like crispy crust, and this was not crispy. I looked on the dial on the oven, the oven was still set on "BROIL" from the other night, DW never set the oven to "BAKE" so the top of the pizza was done, and the bottom was still quite "SOFT" actually, it was quite "FLOPPY" we ate it, but it wasn't anything to write home about, LOL!!!

Our local pizzeria makes good New York style pizza. I know we won't be buying these pizza kits again anytime soon!!!
