benefits & Is my math right?update!# 13 Yee Haa!!!

you are right, it is a buy with your heart thing. altho i still feel that it will save money in the long run.

think of the price of renting a suite in a luxury hotel. i have had suites that consited of the same space as a studio, and there are suites that have one or two bedrooms. they are all very expensive. :goodvibes

as others have said don't buy 1 (500) pt contract. You have 3 children and you can leave DVC to them . I would buy 3 contracts in Equal numbers.

3 contracts at 166 pts each x 3 = 498 pts.

we did something like this for our 2 children. So far 150 and a 100 and soon another 50 add-on the equal it out.

Great idea!!!Thanks.

There is more to DVC than finances. Granted, it is a large investment, so finances are important too.

Let me tell you a bit about how DH & I made our decision.

We knew we loved going to WDW. We knew we'd want to go at least once per year, and more often if possible. We liked to stay in a level of accomodations at least comparable to a moderate, and actually preferred a deluxe level of accomodation, truth be told.

So, we looked into the DVC. We saw the level of accomodations they offered, which were comparable to the deluxes. We liked the fact that the 1BR and larger sizes had full kitchens and laundry. Not that we use the kitchen to cook meals...it's mostly for snacks and breakfast...but it's nice to have a separate area to hang out in, as opposed to being in a regular hotel room where if you want to hang out, you are laying on the bed. We jsut, in general, enjoyed the homier feel of the DVC properties.

So then we looked at finances. Certainly, it is not an investment in the money-making sense of the word, like a retirement investment would be. But, from a financial standpoint, for the value of what you get, it is not a bad way to spend some money. You are pre-paying vaactions...buying the future's vacations at today's prices. It will hold its value...at least it has so far. DH & I bought points in 1997 at OKW for $62.50/point (I think...or maybe it was $65.50). Anyhow, they were far less expensive than they are now, so it has held its value...and actually gained value. We could sell them for much more now than we purchased them for.

We have had nothing but pleasure from our DVC points. I would give up a lot of things before I'd give up my DVC points. I could probably survive on a lot less food! ;)

rie'smom,

I agree with above poster about smaller contracts. We have our initial 150 pts at VWL and then bought 120 at SSR last year during an incentive program.
I'd like to add one more of about 100/120 pts, but, waiting until we see if and where there's a new DVC (I'm hoping for VAKL and DH is hoping VCR). Also, during your posts you mention having two older sons and your daughter. You know, WDW is for YOU too. We usually travel as a family (we have a 25 yr old son, 23 yr old daughter, 17 yr old son and 5 yr old grandson) once a year and once year just my DH and I alone (next week for the F & W at Epcot!!! Can't wait!!!) So, remember........Disney definitely isn't just for the kids. I'm one of those people who would just love to spend January, February, and March moving from one DVC resort to another and stay away from our cold PA winters!!!
