Here's pics of DH's birthday dinner yesterday. I have to say ahead of time, I didn't follow any one recipe, I had to really wing it with ingredients I had in the house.

DH always asks for beans?? boring... So I made a deconstructed cassoulet. I threw in Proscuitto, Pork, White Wine, White & Navy Beans and tons of fresh & dried herbs.
IMG_2311a.jpg

I also braised lamb shoulder steaks (browned in bacon fat ;)) in red wine with lots of veggies & herbs. Served it with the beans & sauteed spinach/arugula.

For dessert, Port & Brandy Poached Pears and Cherries with Chocolate Flan.

Thanks for the kudos! Bob said to tell you " Thanks & that he's thinking of you & your Mom."

P.S. I've been doing my walking on the treadmill. I've stacked tequila bottles on the bookshelf in front of me, seems to help... Mmmmmnnn

Bordeaux in Bordeaux glasses is sooo much better.:thumbsup2 Thank you Target.:rotfl:

Really?? Do I need to head to Tarshay?? I know it has to better than the little plastic medicine cups DW is still using for demos!! ;)

I am very impressed. Yes, I paid $30 for 2 Bordeaux glasses, but every wine lover knows how much the glass matters. We have beautiful wine goblets from when we got married, but these really make a difference.:thumbsup2

Oh, and can I tell you how jealous I am that you have a working treadmill.:headache: My brand new one is European...which of course does not work here in this dump.:sad2:

Homemade pizza with proscuitto and arugula was very helpful tonight. Reminded me of home.:cloud9:

Were those the Reidel glasses? I need new wine glasses the Schott Zwiesel tritan one's were not as unbreakable as they claimed!

Your pizza sounds delicious! :thumbsup2

Just about time for the big birthday bash to get started. T-shirts are done, girls will be here soon, then we'll go for pizza and the HS football (Go Pirates!) the girls will watch their movie when we get back and tomorrow morning we leave for HHI!
DH called HHI resort this morning to ask about a campfire--the regular one is scheduled for Friday nt--so they are going to do a private campfire for us:dance3::banana::cool1: I'm leaving the details to them, but there was talk of s'mores, silliness and possibly even balloons! How cool is that? :yay:

Hope you are having a great time!

I have dinner for DH's b-day finished! A deconstructed cassoulet with pork & lamb shoulder steaks )braised the lamb serperately. A chocolate flan with poached pears & cherries.
Sheryl, I can't believe that you cooked a meal like that when you are down with the swine flu!!! I couldn't cook a meal like that on my best day!

Good evening and happy Friday, friendies. :goodvibes

First of all I want to thank everyone from the very bottom of my heart for your good thoughts, kind words, and prayers. I'm humbled and grateful for the friendship and concern you've shown these past few days ... I don't know exactly what I did to deserve such a gift but I appreciate it more than I can ever adequately express. :grouphug:

As for Grimmie ... she was sent home earlier today with a fist full of prescriptions, a new diet, and an exercise plan. She had two heart attacks - one last Friday and one Tuesday night. Turns out that she had 99% blockage in the primary left artery - the ones that doctors like to refer to as the widowmaker. She's lucky that she didn't end up with a starring role at her own funeral this week. Her heart sustained about 35% damage and she will be limited to moderate exercise going forward but we're hopeful that if she sticks to her diet and gets in the walking she needs to get in on a daily basis that she will be around to gamble for years and years to come.

She has to be feeling better because she asked the cardiologist today when she could go back to the casino. :rotfl2:

I'm going to post this on the review thread too, so that I don't miss anyone. But thanks again to all of you - you're the bestest food-n-booze lovin' friendies a girl could ask for! :goodvibes

Brenda, I'm so glad to hear that Grimmie is doing better!

Before I start, I have decided I need the new Motorola Droid phone that Verizon Wireless introduced this week. My pictures are not very bright since there is no flash on my phone. But... I will have to make do as we don't get new phones for a year. :rotfl:

We finally persuaded myBob to join us at kybecca, our favorite wine bar / bistro in town. He is not a wine drinker but when I told him they had about 50 beers to choose from he was sold!

We sat at the bar so we could people watch as well as see the chefs in action.

What a nice evening! :goodvibes

Elin, this all looks great!

I just got back from LAS last night. Catching up today...

Guess what I have picked up, yep the lovely swine flu! Apparently not in WDW either, sometime after here at home. My dr really jacked me up with lots of meds, I also have a bad sinus infection.

Oh Dear! Hoping you'll be feeling much better, soon.

Agreed.:thumbsup2

I am sick, too. Maybe we haven't been drinking enough booze to kill germs?

Feel better soon. Wish I could send some chicken noodle soup to the sick friendies.

Now if we could all just get the H1N1 vaccine. The doses coming into our area are like 1300 at a time, and sent to schools with student populations exceeding those numbers. Meanwhile they advertise for people to come to them. Why? All they are doing is creating angry and frustrated crowds!

I hear ya. In Utah they have been rationing/saving shots at many locations for only children under 4 and pregnant women. There are a lot of folks in both of those groups here.;) Meanwhile, we've had several adults in their early 50's (with no risk factors) die from H1N1. It's a tough situation.

Good evening and happy Friday, friendies. :goodvibes

So glad to hear Grimmie is doing better. Asking to when she could go back to the casino must be a good sign, right? :goodvibes

I finally let myself cry a little last night after Jay went to bed ... pathetic, I know. :sad2:

I totally understand. I always feel better when I sometimes just let myself get it out.

Vegas was really busy this time. Quick food updates:
SeaBlue at MGM's Prix fixe is fantastic. They have 2 items for apps, main menu, and you get both choices to share. Very nice dinner.

It was a bit of a funny culture clash at Mandalay Bay this week. They were hosting the Latin Grammy Awards, so lots of fans and beautiful people stars in gowns were there most of the week. Add in all the cowboys and fans were in town for the PBR finals, and it was sometimes comical. Everyone was having a good time.
Our splurge was Fleur de Lys at Mandalay. You walk in and immediately relax, it's just a beautiful experience. I'm sure Hubert Keller doesn't need my endorsement, but I'm giving it to him anyway.

Good to be back, friendies! Gin

Shovan, what a yummy dinner you fixed.
Elin, that looks like a great place. Such fun.
Loved all the food pics!! Thanks much!!:goodvibes

ROFL! FDR with cleavage! :rotfl2:

I was actually thinking that I liked the bling you were sporting with it. And Chelsi rocks. Love the pimp hat.

Elin and Sheryl, loved your food porn!

I posted my Todd English's bluezoo™ dinner food porn. Enjoy.

I don't think I can ever look at Brenda (or Chelsi) in the same light after those photos... :rotfl:

I get to meet Catherine today! If we find one another. We are both headed to the DC Metropolitan Food & Entertaining Show and I am getting a ticket from her. So far we know we are both wearing jeans, she has red hair, and I will be with two younger women. That narrows it down, don't ya think? :rotfl2:

Yep. They are really nice. I'll have to get a new set of wine glasses every weekend.;)

PSA: Awesome new wine glasses and charms may lead to over consumption of wine.

Briarmom ... I never put wine charms on my glassware because it's too much trouble to take them off and then put them back on when it's time to wash the dishes. I'm lazy that way.

I have mine hanging from our kitchen cabinet handles so that I can see them all the time!

The wine charms were one of the few F&W items for sale that I liked this year. Most of the merchandise didn't do anything for me ... I still don't get the weird chef on the bicycle. Is he supposed to be a French version of Todd English? :rotfl2:

And the sizes were off on the t-shirts. I bought one of the blue colorforms F&W shirts and got a XXL because I like them big ... got it home and it's about as snug as my swimming suit. WHHHHHHAAAAAAAAT??? I may have gained weight but by gawd I'm not so large that an XXL shows every lump and bump on my torso! :lmao:

I guess the clothing sizes were made to match the beverage pours at the deminars (demos & seminars). :rotfl2::rotfl2::rotfl2:

The only thing that makes me feel better is that I used my super happy funball birthday card to get it, so I didn't lose any real money.

Elin,

I wish I'd known. I have a couple of great photos of Catherine from the Food & Wine Pairing 9/26. :) (I wouldn't post them without her permission, but I'm sure she wouldn't have minded my PMing them to you! ;))

Now that the holiday season is fast approaching I was wondering if the friendies would be interested in a seasonal greeting card exchange? Notice how politically correct I'm being with my choice of words? Note it well ... I don't do it often. But I don't want to upset or offend or unintentionally leave someone out so Happy Winter Solstice to you all!

Since this isn't a closed forum, I thought we could either start a PM chain here on the DIS, or we can do so with regular email. I haven't mailed cards in years but I find myself wanting to do it this year so I thought I would start with you fine foodies. :grouphug:

Please let me know how you would like to exchange addresses if you are so inclined.

Bendy

Yes! Count me in! I will be sending Christmas cards but welcome any holiday greeting of your choice! I love getting real mail. I'm not sure what the easier way would be to share addresses...hmmm.

We found each other! And Kristin took a picture of us. I am posting it because Catherine figured I would. :rotfl2: She looks good. I look like I have a moon face, for some reason! And I look scared to death... :confused3
