I've been absent, but I have a note from my cruise director excusing me.:goodvibes I've been on a cruise that ends this week with my family. I just wanted to make sure I popped in and said "bon voyage" to all the friendies leaving this week for Tastebud Tour '09. I expect lots of photos and trip reports since as a solo dinner I could only hit about 1/2 the booths myself. Travel safely everyone!

Sushi rolling experience in NYC on 10/10:

The meet up for this was at Morimoto restaurant – outside. It’s a little cold in NYC and the wind’s blowing off the river so everyone has to wait and be buffetted by wind. They let us in right at 1:30.

The sushi making demonstration was at the sushi bar which didn’t have enough seating for the whole group so we stood around the sushi bar.

When Morimoto emerged from the kitchen it became obvious that he would not personally be rolling any sushi for us.

Morimoto’s a funny guy. He had two explanations for his injury – first he said he was doing a tiger act in Vegas and the tiger bit him, then he changed that to he went fishing and was trying to land a 300 lb tuna just so he’d have enough tuna for us to roll sushi. One of his chefs rolled the sushi for us. Morimoto called the shots. He really wanted to make sure they didn’t leave out the fresh wasabi. We watched them break down some fish and make a tuna roll.
CIMG0010.jpg

Their professional finished product (accompanied by a roly poly fish head). The green thing in the middle is the fresh wasabi.
CIMG0020.jpg

Then they had us sit at tables and each table had a bamboo sushi mat, plus a plate of fish and a supply of sushi rice, scallions, spicy mayo and shakers of sunflower seeds. My table was led by a chef named Kwon.
CIMG0025.jpg

First step is to take a piece of nori (seaweed) and put it on your sushi mat like so. It’s suggested that you cover the sushi mat with plastic wrap first.
CIMG0023.jpg

Then you have to work with the sticky sushi rice. The key is apparently to get your hands wet enough so that the rice will not stick to your hands. There was a bowl of water on the table for that purpose. Some of us still neglected to get our hands wet enough. It is very difficult to put the rice onto the nori while most of it is sticking to your hands.

Once you have your nori covered in rice, you flip it over onto the mat and put some fish, scallions and some spicy mayo on. Mine is pieces of tuna and hamachi. Really nice fish, too.
CIMG0026.jpg

Then, you roll the sushi up using your mat, squeezing it to keep the ingredients and the rice packed. You can sprinkle the rice with sesame seeds either before you flip it or after you roll it.

CIMG0030.jpg

My roll is too big – I used too much fish and too much sauce. It looks like the Doomsday Machine. Kwon cut the rolls for us with a big knife but he squeezed them in the sushi mat first to keep them from falling apart, and tuna and sauce came out the end. A professional sushi chef would know better. My roll sliced:
CIMG0032.jpg

Kwon also made us a few rolls to eat and put them on the table to pass around. We had white wine with the sushi. It was pretty boring wine but there was enough of it to have two glasses.

You could get in line then and have Morimoto sign your sushi mat and take photos. It was a pretty neat event, mostly because of the hands-on sushi making and the celebrity schmooze. The sushi itself wasn’t really special because they had us making simple rolls, but the fish was very good fish.

I guess I wont' be sitting behind her at the sig dinner this year.

I was totally thinking the same thing. :rotfl2:

The Morimoto event looked like fun. I don't think I'd be able to make a decent looking sushi roll, either. Doomsday Machine. :lmao:

I need to shrink the pictures, they're too big. That'll take time though.

I posted these pics on the recipe board but may as well post them here as well. I made the Dolce de Leche cookies tonight so I could use up the Argentine Dolce de Leche I had in the fridge. I remember the cookie part as tasting sweeter at the F & W Festival and perhaps a softer cookie. Maybe I had them in the oven too long. I'm making the Italian Lemon Tart from Delicious Disney Desserts for Thanksgiving tomorrow and will take a picture.

To help us all celebrate Bendy's birthday at home here are some cocktail recipes from WDW - including some from the new Disney bar menu. A big thanks to bartender Kevin at the Outer Rim Lounge for putting up with all my questions about amounts.

The Sunriser
Victoria Falls Lounge, Animal Kingdom Lodge, WDW
1 serving

Pour 1 ¼ oz. coconut rum & ½ oz banana liquer in ice filled glass. Fill glass with equal parts orange juice, pineapple juice and cranberry juice.

1 seving

1 ½ ounces triple sec or Grand Marnier
3 ounces each pineapple juice and orange juice
1 ½ ounces cabernet sauvignon

Fill tumbler with ice. Add remaining ingredients and serve. For a party – increase amounts and pour over macerated fruit. Let stand overnight so fruit flavors soak in.

Raspberry Rain
WDW General Bar Menu

.5 oz Chambord
4 fresh raspberries
4 fresh lychee
juice from 1/2 lemon

Fill a highball glass with ice and add the remaining ingredients.

Thanks in advance to anyone who can get the Blood Orange Margarita recipe from La Cava del Tequila.

Those look great! Thanks for the ideas :thumbsup2

I tried the pumpkin ale again last night and liked it better. Sometimes I think my blood pressure medicine messes with my taste buds and things taste "off". DH had a good birthday, despite the fact of feeling old at 44, but you know what was really bad? His parents or sisters didn't even call to wish him a happy birthday. :sad2: He talked to his mom yesterday and she "forgot". But had the nerve to ask if we went out to dinner, and when he said yes, she said why didn't you invite us, too? Remind me that these are the people I was appreciating last month.

Family......if we weren't stuck with 'em, we certainly wouldn't pick them would we? :lmao:

Tatania, thanks for the pics and recipes ... your cookies look really good. :thumbsup2

Jamie, please wish your hubby a belated happy birthday from Jay and me. :goodvibes As for family and happy birthday phone calls and such ... why do you think we travel around both our birthdays? ;) My mom is pretty good about remembering, as is Jay's, but that's about it.

Speaking of moms ... Grimace gave me a really generous birthday check this weekend. I felt kind of guilty accepting it ... she's going to Vegas later this month and I'm sure she could have had a gambling good time with that money, but she told us to use it for something fun since you only turn 40 once. :goodvibes She's a good egg.

AWWWW how sweet! :lovestruc

That sounds like so much fun!

The Morimoto event looked awesome! Too cool that you were able to roll your own sushi ... yum! :thumbsup2

Nice fresh fish! Did you put the spicy mayo on yours?

I'm waiting for the Alton Brown critique ... he may not cook up a storm but he knows his food chemistry and I love his sense of humor.

I found a swimsuit today! And it was 70% off the original price and it wasn't horrifyingly larger than what I would usually wear (just one size up ... I guess I can live with that for now).

AND .... it will give everyone at the pool a birdseye of my asphalt tenderization results from last week. :rotfl2:

Alton Brown didn't cook. He said anybody could stand up there and cook a steak. He wanted to talk to us about food. His presentation was really highly entertaining but I don't know how many of his suggestions I would be following...he thinks everyone should cook more. He's right, but I'm lazy and I work and travel a lot. So of course it's easier to buy soup in a box from Trader Joe's.

Goal achieved, check that chore off the list! I picture this guy with a roving, rotating eye checking out your asphalt tenderization ... kind of creepy really.:3dglasses

Since I am thinking of it here are Alton's suggestions about food.

Cook food for yourself. Don’t use processed foods. He says what you cook for yourself is always better than anything else, even if you are a lousy cook.
Teach kids to cook.
Don’t overschedule activities and sacrifice cooking meals.
Try not to eat crap. (This was lumped under two topics: “Beware the Chinese chili” about canned or preserved mass-produced food, and “Chickens don’t have fingers” about the fact that kids like to eat crap.)
Eat seasonally (he demonstrated this by saying that if one sees strawberries and watermelon at the same time, one of them is out of season. Out of season produce, according to Alton, has no real flavor.)
Grow something to eat. (Even if it’s just herbs on your patio)
Be thankful for your food – someone somewhere produced it.
Watch more Food Network – but actually try cooking if you watch it.

He's going to be doing more TV programs in this vein - about eating and nutrition. He also talked about losing 50 pounds. He did it by cutting out sugar and having only one alcoholic drink per week (he says he didn't want to cut that out entirely - don't really blame him - I've had enough this month to last the rest of the year though). He lost 20 pounds that way and then started running 4 miles a day. I couldn't imagine doing that.

And now I need to go try on my dress for V&A and see if I still fit into it. If not I need to pack something else.

oh and here's a picture.

CIMG0076.jpg

This is the one I snuck in with the flash because this is what he looks like without a flash - he wouldn't stop moving.

CIMG0074.jpg

This photo is either a bad flashless picture or it is the only known photo of Alton Brown being sucked into a wormhole.

He HAS lost wieght! Good advice about sugar and alcohol is a sugar so it's bad too but 1 a week? Ain't going to happen.I did South Beach diet for a bit and it works too but stopped it and it all came rushing back on.

Wormhole? Looks like the descent of the Holy Spirit to me.

the dress for V&A is a go I think - it has a side zip and there is a spot where the fabric changes, the zipper catches on that, and I can't twist around far enough to zip it myself but I should be able to do it with assistance so I will enlist my roommate.

I also bought it three festival visits ago. If it doesn't work I'll be wearing the same thing to Bluezoo and V&A.

Had to dig up some pantyhose too - I never wear pantyhose.

Just tell people it's part of your Halloween costume or tell them you fell off your Harley! :rotfl2:
