My raspberry-brie puffs are charred beyond all recognition ... I let Jay talk me into turning on the broiler to brown them up and now they are black wontons loaded with burnt preserves and gloppy cheese.

I'm drinking a margarita made with our new liqueur that we purchased a wee bottle of yesterday ... it's ginger infused cognac from those wimpies in France.

Really good stuff ... I think we're going to have to buy a full-size bottle because this would probably taste great poured over ice. Or mixed with vodka in a martini. Or included in an Asian-style mimosa ... or, well you get the point.

It's called Domaine de Canton ... took a double gold medal Best in Show at the 2008 World Spirts Competition. I'm pretty sure it's produced by the same people that make the St. Germaine liqueur that we like so much.

We bought the small sample bottle because I am not a fan of ginger and were reluctant to shell out $30 on something I might not like. But this is wonderful ... the aroma is light and almost citrusy and the flavor right out of the bottle is refreshing, and a little sweet with just a hint of ginger. The ginger and the cognac must balance each other out somehow ... it's very smooth and enjoyable.

I am waiting with bated breath for my older DD to arrive safe and sound at her home in Massachusetts. She left here at 7:45 this morning and has driven straight through with only one break for bathroom, food and gas.

She is driving her 1996 Neon that she had left with us 18 months ago. It is in very good mechanical shape so we were not too worried about it. We have run it around town off and on but weren't sure how it would react to a major road trip. I have to say it has lived up to the challenge. With one small exception: the speedometer doesn't work when she goes over 45. She has traveled on interstates the whole way and has just stayed with traffic so it has not been an issue. But methinks Massachusetts law will require a working speedometer for registration purposes! (although it passed VA inspection last week so we assume it either is not checked here or they never rev it up over 45!)

I doubt she'll have trouble passing inspection on the speedometer since they don't rev it up very high and just about everything is computerized. I've got to get mine inspected this month.

Actually, we stay well away from 95! We go up through Baltimore to Harrisburg and over to NJ, heading north from there to the Tappan Zee Bridge in NY. Then it is on to I-684, 84 and the Mass Turnpike. It is still interstate driving without the major headache that 95 has become almost 24/7.

I hope it does pass! I figure their inspections can't be so different from all the others we have endured throughout the years.

We do have 2 daughters! Older daughter, Kathrin (30) is in MA. Younger daughter, Kristin (23) lives at home with us making money so she can go off into the big, bad world and pursue her acting career. Luckily our bank didn't care what field her degree was in.

And I agree with the spelling thing ... I have been known to mis-type because my fingers are stoopid, but there are people around these boards who drive me crazy with their usage errors. There / their / they're spring immediately to mind along with your / you're, but I've seen an awful lot of others including "baited" for bated, and "except" for accept. It drives me crazy. I have a friend at work who's originally from Albania and she understands the English-American language better than most Americans.

Since myBob's family is Polish and Czech I am pretty sure the French do do that booze better! As for the pastries... my MIL could have given them a run for their money. The whole collective lot of them. With one hand tied to her apron strings.

And don't get me started on poor grammar/spelling on the DIS. I know that some of it is because of language differences but most of it is plain laziness and lack of attention (either here or in grammar school!).

I just posted another update on the blog but it's not very good - the blog just arbitrarily changes font sizes and styles on me and I don't know how to correct it because the screen is different in the compose area vs. the preview area. So it all looks fine while I'm typing everything and then I try to preview it / publish it and it's totally different.

Quite frankly it pi$$es me waay off.

I had a glass of La Crema pinot noir last night with my dinner, to celebrate losing 3.6 lbs. this week, after a few weeks of gains and losses. Another .2 lbs. and I'll be a whopping 50 lbs. lighter than I was a week before Thanksgiving. But for now, I'm telling people I lost 50 lbs. Not 49.8 lbs.




I'll probably post my total loss again the week before my Gluttoberfest trip, and then share the Aftermath when I return.

I finally saw Julie & Julia today and really enjoyed it. I'm ridiculously envious of the life she led....great food, great wine and lots of travel!

Watching the Iron Chef is making me HUNGRY. Not eating though. I am thinking I should at least try keeping my weight down in anticipation of the Disney foodfest. But I would like everything Cat Cora is making and most of what the challenger is making (liver custard...naaah) for Battle Maple Syrup.
