Wishes Dessert Party

I CANNOT believe this will only be on for the summer. I'm a dessertaholic - can live off sweets - and was salivating looking at those pictures. I am NOT at all happy that this won't be an option in September :sad1: :sad1:

Today is our 14th anniversary!

Yesterday was a poopie day indeed; had to have a root canal (cracked my tooth from grinding them at night) and it took SIX shots of Novocaine total. One of them was actually down into the middle of the pulp of the tooth! :scared1:

I hope you were well enough from the root canal to enjoy your anniversary. Your menu sounds SO good. Seems like a few of us need an overdose of novocaine to get numb. I once had to have 3 root canals within a 2 month period and I can't get frozen either. The dentist was dripping novocaine onto the root as he was working *shudder*. I was traumatized for years! :headache:

Our first day I'm hoping to get a ressie for Nine Dragons. We haven't eaten there since the renovation, and I'd still like to try it.

The second day, I had wanted to try Ohana's for dinner. My mother, quite frankly, hates the menu. Everyone else is pretty much down for whatever I suggest. I've never been to Ohana's, so I'm not sure what to do here. Other possible ideas are having everyone go to Chef Mickey's for a late breakfast, because I think character dining would be fun with our big group, and my dad is still here on this day.

The third day, we have MNSSHP, and we pretty much leave the day open.

The fourth day, I'm having lunch at Sci Fi. Not because it's spectacular food, but because I think my four year old will love eating lunch in a car. Mom and Nana won't be joining us, they'll be going elsewhere.

The fifth day, we're having dinner at the Brown Derby to celebrate my birthday. This is a place my mom actually likes, and everyone likes, so score one for me.

The sixth day, we leave, but our flight is later, so we actually have time for breakfast on this day. I was debating another character breakfast, but I'm not sure.

Thank you so much if you read all that. So, has anyone been to / enjoyed Ohana's lately? Nine Dragons? Can you think of any other places...not knowing my family at all :lmao:...that you think is good for a big group?

Thanks again. I really appreciate it.

To be honest, I wouldn't take my Mom to Ohana again. She didn't enjoy it because there was quantity but not the quality she likes. We don't go to the Nine Dragons either, because my hometown Vancouver is famous for amazing Chinese food and Nine Dragons just doesn't measure up, IMHO. I like Sci Fi and am also making a rezzie for that. Never been to Brown Derby but it wouldn't be my choice for a signature restaurant either - not with Jiko, California Grill, Citrico's, Narcoosee's, Yachtsmen and Artist's Point as alternatives.
Our first breakfast at Disney will be at Boma (a surprise for my sister on her first visit) and now I'm nervous about the "off" day and dry food. I can only hope we have a Bendy kind of experience.

You have much to learn, grasshopper (BTW, also the name of an oldschool milkshake boozy drink!)

I come to the friendies to learn. :goodvibes

To be honest, I wouldn't take my Mom to Ohana again. She didn't enjoy it because there was quantity but not the quality she likes.
Okay, good point. And I happen to know she's not interested in the food at all. Basically I've got one lone dissenter and everyone else is the, "I don't care where we go, you pick," variety.

We don't go to the Nine Dragons either, because my hometown Vancouver is famous for amazing Chinese food and Nine Dragons just doesn't measure up, IMHO.

We have pretty good Chinese food here, but my favorite dish at Nine Dragons is something I've yet to see recreated anywhere in my vicinity, and that's the honey chicken. I absolutely love it.

I should give you a little background. Normally I'd be with you. Why pick Brown Derby when there's so much else to choose from?

This past year has been a lot of Disney trips for me. I went in Sept 08, Dec 08, and May 09. Amongst all those trips I've eaten at Citrico's twice, the Derby twice, and the California Grill once. I know for a fact that Mom's not interested in Artist Point. She'd definitely be down for Yachtsmen, but the older I get, the more adversely red meat affects my system, and I can't see going there to order fish when I know they have things I like at the Brown Derby (that won't make me sick).

Our first breakfast at Disney will be at Boma (a surprise for my sister on her first visit) and now I'm nervous about the "off" day and dry food. I can only hope we have a Bendy kind of experience.

Pretty much everyone else on the DIS that I've talked to has absolutely loved Boma, so I'm going to run with the fact that I think our experience was a total fluke. Don't worry. :goodvibes

Happy Anniversary!!!! Please share the recipe for the ribs and chicken when you have time.:flower3:

I'm the same way when it comes to novocaine but I thought, like you, my tolerance for alcohol is so high, why am I like this with novocaine?:confused3

Thank you! I will post the recipe in a separate post coming up; I had to tweak it a little bit, but we think it turned out even better!

HAPPY ANNIVERSARY!!!!!

And next time I'd opt for the wine - less of a hangover I think...

Thanks! Surprisingly the Red Stripe was as good as I remembered and I only had one--had to leave room for the pie! ;)

Happy Anniversary, Whogirl'sMom! :goodvibes

Thank you, friendie!

Whogirl, happy anniversary!

Thanks you, another friendie!

Dinner was great and DH was still talking about it this morning! That was the best gift I could have gotten. The tooth is almost better; the dentist said that it would be a little sore to chew on due to the "irritation" to the root during the procedure. Ya think?! :rotfl:

Happy Anniversary Whomom!!! :cool1:

How about a wedding picture? Or some food porn? Or both? :lmao:

Hope that nasty tooth is feeling better today.

Thank you! Alright, alright, I really need to make the effort to refresh myself on how to post pictures! I will take a picture of our wedding picture or scan it or something.

No food porn, we scarfed it down way too quickly for that. I realized that nothing tastes like celebration to me like stuffed potatoes with little green onions (scallions) in them. That was our party side dish for special occasions when I was growing up.

Tooth is recuperating nicely, however the bank account is still in shock. $988.00 :faint:.

Happy Anniversary :flower3:! Dinner sounds great I hope your feeling better after yesterday:scared:. I love Key Lime pie did you make it?

Thank you for the anniversary wishes! :goodvibes I am ashamed to say that I did not make the pie last night. I almost always make it from scratch because it's so much better, but last night Marie Callendar did the work for me! I have the recipe from the Carnival cruise line and it's so good--only 4 ingredients!

Happy Anniversary....but I'm sorry about the root canal!

Thanks, Lori! At least I wasn't at the dentist ON my anniversary!

Happy late anniversary Jamie! Your dinner sounded great. Hope it was a wonderful meal!

Sorry about the root canal. I have major issues getting numb too, maybe its just us women? :rotfl: The last time I went to a regular dentist I was up to 11 injections, some right into the nerve and still could feel everything. Now if I have to have any work done I go to a guy that just totally knocks my butt out. It is so much easier and alleviates the anxiety of "am I going to get numb this time". Anyhoo...hopefully your on the mend and doing much better now.

I have never needed more than one shot before; I hope this is not my body chemistry changing with middle age! :scared::rotfl2: Yeah, there's nothing like hearing , "Let's do a ligament shot and see if that works." What????!!!

Happy Anniversary Whogirl'smom :goodvibes

Thanks, jeminni! :)

I was feeling much better yesterday morning, so the tooth didn't interfere with the anniversary at all! I also had the extra drip in the middle of the procedure--the poor guy just kept saying, "Sorry, sorry" every time I would wince. I told them I would rather go through childbirth again than a root canal like that one. He said every tooth is different and you never know. Great!

Thanks for the well-wishes! :goodvibes

Sweet Jalapeno Ribs

3 lbs. country style pork ribs, trimmed (I used two pounds of boneless and one pound of chicken tenders)
2 cans pinto beans, drained
1/2 tsp. garlic powder
1/2 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. pepper
1 med. onion, chopped
1 10 oz. jar jalapeno jelly (didn't have this--substitution follows recipe)
5 oz. A-1 steak sauce
2 jalapeno peppers, seeded and chopped (optional)

Cut ribs apart (if not boneless), sprinkle with garlic, salt and pepper. Place ribs on a rack in a broiler pan Broil 5 1/2 inches from heat 18 to 20 minutes or until well browned, turning once. (Reduce time a couple of minutes if boneless) Add ribs to slow cooker and sprinkle with onion.

Combine jelly, steak sauce and pepper (if desired) in a saucepan, cook over low heat until jelly melts. Pour over ribs stir gently.

Cover and cook on HIGH 5-6 hours or LOW 9-10 hours. Remove ribs, skim fat from sauce. Cook sauce with beans uncovered on HIGH 30 more minutes or until slightly thickened. Add ribs just before serving to reheat. Yields 4 servings.

TWEAKINGS: Since the ribs were boneless, I cooked them on LOW in the crock pot for about 2 hours then added the broiled chicken and more sauce and cooked on LOW for 3 more hours. I broiled the chicken tenders in the oven for about 5 min. each side before adding them to the crock pot.

I did not have jalapeno jelly, had never seen it and didn't want to run all over town, so I raided our fridge, which is always full of condiments. Here is what I came up with for the sauce, which DH raved about:

1/2 cup A-1 sauce
1/2 cup hot taco sauce (ours had a slight sweet taste)
1/4 cupKC masterpiece BBQ sauce
2 TBSP. Heinz 57 sauce
a squirt of sugar-free pancake syrup (:rotfl:)

This stuff was great! Just spicy enough and slightly sweet. Enjoy!

Oh, and I just put the pinto beans in a pot and spooned some of the sauce in with them and cooked on low. I didn't want to be fishing my beans out of all that sauce in the crock pot.

I just watched "Grand Torino" the other night and I can't help but think of an interview I saw with Clint Eastwood that was SO funny re: John Wayne. I found it on youtube for you to see. The whole video is 9 minutes long but the part you want to look for is from section 1:58 to 3:25 and is only a minute long or so. You will definitely :happytv:

TravelMel ... you post the best clips! :thumbsup2

I was wondering if it was the same guy we had he use to work at Whispering Canyon. How have you been feeling?:flower3:

He was pretty high-wire, if you know what I mean. Other than the mis-fire on the credit card joke he was fine ... a little slow with the beverages but I find that happens a lot at buffets.

I'm feeling a lot better, thanks. Still pretty tired by the end of the day, especially this week because my manager is out and that means I get the joy of trying to do my job and his job ... but not a lot of residual pain or itchiness or any of that happy crap that sometimes comes with shingles. I think I was very lucky that we caught it so quickly.

I CANNOT believe this will only be on for the summer. I'm a dessertaholic - can live off sweets - and was salivating looking at those pictures. I am NOT at all happy that this won't be an option in September :sad1: :sad1:

We're hoping that this a trial run by Disney to see what the demand and reaction are ... and if it's what they hope for it will become a permanent offering.

I was not impressed when I read the initial press release but the review / pics I've seen have gone a long way towards changing my mind. It would be fun to do, especially in cooler weather so I do hope they extend it or make it a permanent option.

You want a Bendy experience without the credit card panic. :thumbsup2

Thanks for posting the recipe!:flower3:

Yes indeedy! I will try to update links this weekend.

Hi all!

Found this info on an unofficial site regarding the F&W Festival. Someone posted the link on the F&W 2009 thread. Very interesting. I wonder if this is the "free" seminars they are talking about.

If it is, hopefully it will deter the "free loaders" who are only there to eat and drink up the samples and then leave. This will leave more space for those who are there to really learn something.

But, as a friend said, even if it is say $5.00 a person, that will surely add up, especially for a couple. ;)

Wine Seminars (there will be a nominal fee to attend) will run daily for 45 minutes and introduce you to a featured winery with a few samples to taste plus some helpful tips about the wines. Seminars will take place Monday-Thursday at 10 and 11:45 a.m., 1:30, 3:15, and 5 p.m.; and Friday – Sunday at 12:00, 2:00, 3:45, and 5:30 p.m.

Culinary demonstrations (there will be a nominal fee to attend) by chefs preparing tasty dishes and offering some helpful cooking tips. More importantly, a sample of the prepared dish. Each seminar runs for 45 minutes and will take place Monday - Thursday at 10:45 a.m., 12:30, 2:15, and 4 p.m.; and Friday – Sunday at 1:00, 2:45, and 4:30 p.m.

Oh my friendie ... yes ... they serve alcoholic milkshakes at Sci-Fi. :thumbsup2 I am partial to Martia's Martian ... a combination of chocolate and vanilla milkshakes mixed with bailey's and kahlua. It was slap me silly good! :lmao:
.
Martia's Martian!?? YUM!!!!!!!!!! We are def. trying sci fi this time anyway, and this just got me excited. i figure its our honeymoon, and to be a bit tipsy in the middle of the day is fully acceptable!!

Have never done the Princess meal .... but Grand Floridian Cafe serves a great breakfast and they also have boozy morning beverages. :thumbsup2

I'm starting to pick up on a theme here ... :lmao:
YAY! we were wondering about the GF cafe!! We are thinking of going there for our first breakfast..nice and convenient since we will be at the GF!! Can't wait to check out their concierge stuff too...We stayed at Sugarloaf in 07 and LOVED the offerings there..so we are hoping the Royal Palm Club will be great too! :)

ITA..i am intrigued by the dessert party idea as well.

About the wine seminars-the small fee is basically what Australia did last year. We didn't have a problem with the set up or the cost.

As long as it's a reasonably good value, it will be OK with us. (And DH and I share food and wine happily at F&W. After 29 years I'm pretty sure it's safe to eat and drink after him. :rotfl:)

Thanks for the info! I wish Disney would release more about the specifics for this year. I'm impatiently waiting.

There seems to be tons of information from the following link. I think it is the Miami Examiner. Not sure where this guy is getting his info or if it is correct, but he had dates and times included.

When you go through, make sure you click on the links included.

Here you go - found this on another site.

Prices are not final yet but plan on spending about $135 per person, including gratuity and excluding tax. Add another $60 per person to that, and you gain access to the very private and exclusive "Wine View Lounge" that offers private seating, a premium bar and cheese station. I told you it would be unforgettable.

:rotfl:

Offline one night, and I miss three pages!

Travelmel, you don't know how happy you have made me to mention grasshoppers! My mother made grasshopper parfaits when I was little and I remember that delicious mintyness with much fondness! (My parents were firm believers in the "let the kid have a taste of anything" club....which led to a rather embarrassing incident at a wine festival when I was about 8....but I digress....:rolleyes1)

Whogirl'smom...happy belated anniversary! The ribs sound great, but then it's hard to go wrong with a Southern Living recipe.

Brenda, I had just about decided not to go to Sci Fi in October, but I believe you have sucked me back into it! (Especially since I really only wanted to go so that I could have the boozy milkshakes!) Speaking of which....I made a little boozy milkshake myself a few nights ago.....Bailey's, Kahlua, and Edy's Slow Churned Light Mud Pie ice cream (because you have to watch your calories, right!;) Delish, and quite refreshing during a steamy NC night when the humidity was about 1000%.
