Belly button piercing in young teens....

I'm curious as to why you guys think it's SO trashy. I was allowed to get my bellybutton pierced at 13 going on 14. Sure it's trashy when girls have belly shirts on with a playboy bunny dangling from their stomachs, but come on now. Just a simple barbell? What's the harm? Very few of my friends know I even have it done, because I don't go flaunting it everywhere. I'd just like to hear you all's reasoning for it.

I just I'm just super trashy too, since at 14, I have my bellybutton, eyebrow, cartilege, and will be going to get my tragus done this week.

I got mine done at 15 under the condition that I wouldn't get a tattoo. I got a tattoo about a year ago (I'm almost 20). I think that piercings (or tattoos for that matter) look trashy when combined with an overall trashy look. You can never see mine unless I'm in a bathing suit and half the time I'm in a one piece so you can't see it anyways. I agree, however, that 13 does seem young. But then again she can take it out in a few years if she wants.
Just so you know the holes don't close that quickly. I had mine out for almost a year and then I put my rhinestone barbell back through and it went in fine :confused3

My best friend's closed up within a day or two (believe me- she was devastated and I tried to help her push it back through :crazy2: ). She had had it pierced about a year and a half at that time.

It depends on the person and how long ago you had it done. My earring holes didn't close up after not having earrings in for over a year, and someone I know had hers close up after a few months. :confused3

I can't give much of a reason for it's "trashiness" other than... it looks trashy to me. Why do girls in miniskirts and fishnets looks trashy? How else can you describe it? :confused3

It all has to do with opinion. If you love it, then you love it- why does it matter if others find it trashy?

Funny this would come up today. Just returned from a birthday dinner. One those celebrating is turning 15 next week. As we start to sit at the table she says wait guys look here. I have an announcement to make. Look what I got for my birthday.
She holds up her shirt and lo and behold she got her belly button pierced.

Sort of surprised me, she is very much a tom boy.
DS's GF also got her done at 15.

I OTOH am 38 and am planning on getting mine done as a reward once I finish losing weight. I'm in a student belly dance troop and it is very common for belly dancers to have a pierced BB

My neighbor in her late 30s had it done and I about freaked out. I guess she thought I would think it was cool. Not what I was thinking. I will never sign for my girls to get this done.

Never say never! :goodvibes My DD16 has been begging to get hers done, and I kept telling her she can do it when I did - at 35[and I love mine, BTW, and so does my DH], but I told her recently that if she makes honor roll this term, I will take her to do it ....so we will see. I think that"trashy is in the eye of the beholder" - I am a teacher's aide, and believe me, none of the students see my belly! It is only visible when I have my bathing suit on - my two piece - if I am at a "family/school/public swim type thing, I wear a one piece. I may be almost 42, but I'm not dead! It was something I did for myself, and I am glad I did. JMHO.

I think you gotta keep some perspective here - there are kids who do not listen to or respect their parents, who smoke cigarettes or do pot or worse. There's getting your belly button pierced at 14, or having sex at 14. They're not breaking any laws, its just personal opinion.

My mum was annoyed with my sister the other week (can't remember what she'd done, something like not cleared up after herself and her friends when they ate lunch), and she began ranting about what a terrible job she'd done. I was like, seriously Mum, if not clearing up a few dirty plates is your idea of a bad parenting job, you have unreachable standards! She managed to raise three kids who've never been in any kind of trouble, been straight A kids, never smoked, partied through the night until we were old enough or showed either of my parents any disrespect (because we know what'd happen if we did any of those things).

Whilst you bug your kids over not picking up their room or whatever, remember that things could be a LOT worse.

I think it's way to young!!!

When I had mine done a long time ago, I had to have it done at a tattoo parlor. I'm assuming, that you still have to have it done there. I doubt they do this at Libby Lu or Clairs in the mall :sad2: Anyway, at the tattoo parlor, you have to a parent sign something if you are under 18 yrs old. I understand that parents need to pick and choose your battles, but this is a battle I would pick if my DD was 13 and wanted it done.

Another scenerio is maybe this girl has a friend with an older sibling that could have done it for her :confused3 Maybe her parents don't know if she keeps it covered up - it would be easy to hide.

Who knows, but I do think it's to young!!!!

My DH loved mine! LOL! I let it heal over when I got pregnant with my last child. I was 32 when I had it done. I would love to get a new one as you can't even tell where the other one was. I would love to get another but feel I'm over the hill now. Even though DH would love it I think that 44 is way too old! :p

13 is really young, and if 13 & 14 yr. olds are getting it done, then the parents must be signing for it. Here I believe you have to be 18.
My niece got her bellybutton pierced at 14, (I was really surprised my brother caved)
My DD waited until she was 18 and got hers done. She only kept it maybe 2 years.
I don't mind seeing it on 16 year olds and up, but I think 13/14 is too young.

While I don't think it looks trashy and I would love to have it done if I had a flat stomach and could handle the pain, I think that 13-14 is much too young. DH's ex let their DD15 have it done against his wishes and then she ended up getting a bad infection which required very expensive antibiotics that they of course wanted us to pay for. The ex also let the older daughter get a tattoo at 15. As part of an overall trashy look, it does look trashy but when a girl is 22-23 with a flat tummy, it can look very attractive IMHO.

Personally, the thought of someone poking me thru the belly button with a needle makes me ill. I don't handle pain well at all.

I let dd have hers pierced when she was 14.

Frankly, I hate it and it creeps me out. Her stepmother is the one who thought it would be a fabulous idea. Her dad told her she had to have my permission first (she was staying with them at the time), knowing how I feel about it--he was sure I'd say no. I did at first and then DH talked to me about it. His point was that in the big scheme of things, it really wasn't such a big deal. I let her get her ears pierced several years earlier, after all. DH reminded me that she was a straight A student and a really good kid--if she wanted to do this and her stepmother would handle taking her to get it done and I didn't have to have anything to do with the care of the darn thing, why was I making a big deal about it?

I realized I was making a mountain out of a molehill--it can grow back--it's not permanent.
