If want to park car on our own who usually takes luggage out of car and onto luggage cart? Bellhop or valet. I do want to use bellhop but plan to self park. I just don't want someone to start to unpack my car and find out it is the valet. Or there bellhops staning outside waiting and how do I differentiate them from the valets?

How much should I tip bellhop?

We just pull up to the front of the hotel and a bellhop comes over and starts unloading our bags from the car. There's always been a lot of people standing out front of the hotel to help with loading/unloading. I follow the bellhop into the hotel while my bf goes and parks the car. We always self-park. I honestly don't remember ever even being asked about valet parking while our bags are being unloaded. The person checking us into the hotel asks if we're self or valet parking so they know what to charge us, but I've never been asked by the bellhop. We tip $1 per bag.

I just stayed at the Marriott in Boston for a Girls Weekend. We pulled up in front of the hotel. One bellhop/valet (?) came and unloaded the car. 10 pieces of luggage = $10.00. I hand him the $$ and he then brings the luggage into the main lobby as we all check in.

Then another bellhop/valet takes the luggage to our room and unloads it in the room = $10.00 more!!!

No one liked the room. One friend had some Marriott Rewards card from work and she wanted a bigger and better room on a higher floor. Marriott obliged and we MOVE to another floor = $10.00 (but that was our decision)!!!!

All these men were extremely nice and very accommodating. We had no problem tipping them at all but it does add up.

ETA: I believe the first gentleman we tipped actually took the car as well AFTER he left our luggage in the lobby.

Oh..one more thing to mention..we asked immediately for more towels and extra bars of soap and when housekeeping came 10 mins after we were in the new room...$5.00 tip to him.

Later we asked for a refridgerator (I was surprised the room did not have one) (Wine and cheese needed refridgeration) another $5.00 tip to him!!!

IT ALL ADDS UP! My theory is IF you do not have the ability to tip, then maybe you should rethink parking your car yourself as vs a valet, carry all your luggage yourself as well and do not request anything extra from housekeeping! (I have another friend whose DH refuses to TIP and so they do everything THEMSELVES)!

Oprah had a special on her show once about tipping, luggage is generally $1.00 a bag.

On my post about the 10 pieces of luggage...most of it was large oversized tote bags (similiar to the boat and tote type)...they were not large heavy pieces of luggage (we were away only for the weekend)!

When you pull up to the entrance at the lobby, valet usually takes your bags and loads them onto a luggage cart. You will know if he/she is valet because they will give you a valet parking voucher (which you should show at check-in) and they have VALET written across the back of their shirts. He/she will put your luggage to one side, you will then recieve a receipt for your luggage. The bellhop will either go up to the room with your luggage with you or they will follow you up a few minutes later. I usually tip the bellhop $1.00 per bag or more if they have been really helpful. I usually give the valet guys $5.00 each time they take/return your car or sometimes $3.00 if they aren't so helpful.

If the valet is unloading car but I am not using him to park car i need to tip him in addition to bellhop? DH will love that.

If a valet guy approaches you as you pull on the drive (which they will), just tell them you are using 'self park' and need the help of 'luggage services' to get your luggage to the room. In this case I would tip only once (when you get you luggage dropped off at the room).

Hope that helps.
