Being short!

I'm 5'8'' and am always being asked to help someone in the grocery store...usually little old ladies!! They are so grateful.
In any case.....my 19 y/o dd is 5'10''. Her boyfriend?? 5'2''. Now, that's something to see in action. People ask me if that bothers me!!! Ah no. The thing that makes me happy?? That my dd has no problem, at all, dating someone so much shorter than she is. I think that's a wonderful thing.
I wish people would just get over the 'tall/short' thing. It really doesn't matter.

When random people tell me that I am short I act really surprised. I start saying things like..How come no one ever told me I was short?? I didn't know I was short oh great....How did this happen?? I say it in a joking way but sometimes... One thing that I hate is having random people have their kids try to stand right beside me so that they can measure their kids height against mine. I am a grandmother show me some respect.

I am 5'3". I am okay with being short. I never wear heels I am a flats gal. I am taller then my mom who is 5'1" my dd is 13 and is as tall as I am.
The only time being short annoyed me was in basic training. When you marched around it went from tall to shortest. SO you would get in line formations and they would say if your taller then the person in front of you tap so I was always in the back:rotfl:there was maybe one or two I was taller then but there were four lines so guaranteed I was always at the back of one of them.

You guys are all tall. I am only 4' 8" tall. I have stools all over the place in my house. In my kitchen the bottom shelfs are for the day to day things and the others have to put their things (like their glasses, cups, medicines ect.) on the other shelves. I ended up putting in a bakers rack in my kitchen so that I could have the kitchen items that I need at my level.
We just got a new bed. They are all so tall but you can get the lower box springs. Even with the lower one's I couldn't get into bed so my husband built me a special step stool. I hate going shopping and because I am pooh sized as well I can not stand going clothes shopping at all.
I can't and never could wear heels so I have never been taller.
When I go away I either have to bring a stool with me so that I can get into beds or take a running jump at the bed. I am amazed at how many people do not know what a stool is when asked for one. Hotels are really not set up for short people. I have a slight disability so just climbing onto beds is not something I am able to do. On my last cruise I just packed a stool in my suitcase and was glad I did.

Sorry of my life. 4'8" My aunt was even smaller at 4'6" at her tallest. At least in her house things were set up for her and I was comfortable.
Have stools all over the house and keep one in the van. Need to set it up so I cam get in the car and pull it in after me.

LOL I forgot about the stools that are in my van and my husbands truck. I would not be able to get into my husbands truck (and it is not one of those really big one's) without it. My van has running boards on it so that I can get in and out of it but I have the stool for things when I am out. Like getting a pedicure. I can't get into those chairs without it

Do people ask you rudely? I'm over the top thankful. Like, I want to give you a hug thankful. I'm so glad you were right there at the right time and saved me! I want to tell you how embarrassed I am, and I always apologize and say thank you. Probably too many times. Okay...well, you get what I mean... :worship:

Only once that I recall. I was walking down an aisle & this woman said 'Get that for me' in a rude tone. No please & no thank you. I was so shocked I just did it. She was definitely a rare case though. Most people are very kind & polite.

And again, I really don't mind.

Wow! The nerve of some people! Thanks again, tall people. Your services are truly appreciated by us shorties! :lmao:

My ds16 is 6ft like my dh. We are not sure if he is going to grow anymore, but he would love to grow a few more inches and be taller than his dad.

Boys are so funny, it sounds like my son. He's 19 and he was so excited the other day because he thought he grew another inch. (He was 6'2" the last time I measured him) I told him I'd notice it if he were any taller, so after much debate, he stood by the stairs (so I could get on them to measure him  ) and I measured him. He'd grown another 1 1/2", so now he's 6'3 1/2! When I first started dating DH, my boys were in NH visiting their dad for the summer. DH went with me to the airport to pick them up. I have a habit of referring to Jake as "my baby" because he's the youngest. DH just started cracking up when my "baby" walked up (he was already 6 feet at 14 yo). Not bad for a 8 week early premie that weighed only 4 pounds! Anyway, DS was so excited that he exceeded his dad's 6'2"!

I hate having to ask someone at the grocery store to reach something for me, but there's never any employees around to help! I'm always grateful, and everyone that has ever helped me has always smiled and been good-natured about it. I wonder if you'd ask for help at the store if they'd go on the intercom and say "tall person needed on Aisle 9". :goodvibes

I've tried all of them. Unfortunately, they don't carry much in the way of size 16 and 18. However, I have lost 19 pounds and have FINALLY fit back in to a size 12p :cool1:! I haven't been that size since 1994! My favorite pair of dress pants are the pair I bought from Bannana Republic last month. However, I'm in that in-between stage. Meaning I can fit into a size 14P or a size 12P depending on the cut of the skirt or pants.

I'm also not too fond of the style they have of late. I've tried on a few dress tops from Bannana Republic and Anne Taylor Loft, and none of them look good on me (except for the one top I got from Loft last Spring). I've been in Ann Taylor, but 99% of the clothes they sell are all dry clean only. I'd rather have clothes that I can wash rather than spending money on a weekly dry cleaning bill.

I've also tried Express, but nothing fits correctly. Plus, their style is more for the women in their 20's and mid 30's. Most of the styles that have been out for a few years have that 80s look to it with an updated look, which I absolutely . I'm 41 and while that style looked good on me back when I was a teenager, it doesn't now :(

Congratulations on your weight loss!! Finding pants that aren't dragging on the ground is the biggest challenge to me, as not all stores have petite sizes, or the clothes aren't as pretty as the regular sizes. On the plus side, I can handle a "mini" dress, or short-shorts, because it's a normal length for me!! I'll see a model in a mail advertisement or internet and the dress will be up to her hiney, so I figure she's probably almost 6 feet, so it should be good. Usually dresses like that will just skim a little above the knee.

:thumbsup2 My ds16 just can't wait to be that tiny hair taller than his dad. Our youngest who is 11 years old and just recently passed up is 13 years old sister in height, is so hoping that he outgrows both his dad and his older brother.....and he just might.

When I'm shopping and it seems like I need help with something on a high shelf, tall people just stop and ask what can they get lol. I thank them, but darn why does the things I really like have to be placed so high?

The grass is always greener, as they say. In my young single days I hated being tall. I'm only 5'8, but once you slap on a pair of heels good luck finding a guy. I think I read somewhere that the average woman is 5'5-5'6 and the average man is 6'0. All I know is that it never seemed like that were many guys taller than I was when I was in my heels! And yes, I do discriminate, lol, I prefer a man taller than I am. At any rate, looks like my dd is going to end up between 5'3 and 5'5, and that's fine by me!

I had the same problem.
Back in the day when I could wear a high heel without being in agony, I ended up being 5'10"-5'11"...usually much taller than many of the guys who were available. While I did not necessarily have a problem dating someone shorter than me or the same height, I often found the men had a problem with not being taller than me. They all LOVED the cute petite little girls.

Another vertically challenged person here. I'm now 4'10. I used to be 4'11. But I'm getting older and shorter. If only I could get slimmer instead!

My mom was around 4'8 and my dad 5'2, so I had no chance. All my aunts were short too.

I can't wear high heels because of a broken ankle 30 years ago. But at my age, I don't give a darn.

I also have to ask for help to reach things on those high shelves in the grocery store.

DH was 6'2 so we were quite a couple. People would ask if I was his daughter. He would say, "she is not that young and I am not that old". Loved that.

::yes:: The same thing always happens to me! Not easy being 5'1"!

I didn't see this thread before.
I am 4'10. My 12 yr old towers over me and my 6 yr old is up to my chin!

When rude people come up to me and say "how tall are you?" I always say "how much do you weigh?"

Ooh lots of us shorties .. :)

I'm 4ft 10 and a half with a size 1 shoe.

Clothes/shoe buying is a complete pain, I tend to buy kids stuff as its usually nicer than most of the petite ranges in the likes of next!

I used to wear heels a lot but not since being a sahm .. I still wear them occasionally.

yup weight shows immediately ... An ex of mine used to say my belly grows & shows after eating a pea!
When pregnant I know within a week as I'm out of my clothes on waist & bust that quick .. Others guess by about 3 weeks!

Shop shelves are mainly not that high in the UK so I don't have trouble grocery shopping mainly but can with high rails in clothes shops. I usually find a member of staff but once saw one of my sons school friends mum & asked her nicely laughing as i explained .. She said " oh how embarrassing" as she reached up for me .. That made me feel embarrassed for her as no I don't find it embarrassing just a pain!

I think there are a lot more suitable clothes out there now than when I was a teenager though which is good & also those specialist small feet shoe websites.

My dad was the shorter in our family at around 5ft 2 I think & his sister is small too the rest of our family are all average to tall.

My DS 12 is a little short for his age but up to my head already DD 4 is going to take after her daddy I think who is 6ft 2, though everyone says she's dainty I don't see it as she ain't as dainty as I was or my DS was! :)

I'm 4'11" 1/2. I always joked that I could be Mickey or Minnie.
I always say that when I retire, I'm going to be Donald Duck at Disneyland! He's even shorter than Mickey. I met a "friend of Mickey" a few years ago and she told me I could be Mickey, Minnie, Donald, Daisy, and Stitch. The ducks and Stitch generally require someone under 5 feet so hey!

I'm 4'11"...was 4'11.5" when I was younger, but I think the shrinking that happened to my grandma is starting. :sad1: My mom is 4'11 3/4", and my bio dad is 5'3". I was doomed. My aunts, uncles, and cousins on my moms side are all short- nobody over 5'5" even the men.

DH is 6'...I hoped that our kids would get his height. Sadly, no. DD16 is almost 5'2", and DS 12 (almost 13) is only 4'9". He is SO short and it's much, much harder for a boy. I wish there was something I could do to help him.

Good on ya Erin! :goodvibes

I'm 5' and 3/4!
"God only lets things grow until they're perfect. Some didn't take as long as others." I've decided to adopt this as my motto :rotfl2:

I hope you don't mind me stealing that :rotfl:

If I'm ever in a car wreck while I'm driving, the air bag is going to kill me since I have to have my seat so close to the steering wheel.

And I hate that you can't "hide" any extra weight on a petite frame! I don't wear extra weight well at all!

Both of these are so true!! Just 2lbs is noticeable!

I'm 5'1". The only time it ever bummed me out was when I checked into being a flight attendant. They have a minimum height and I was too short.

That's what happened to my DM!

I have so many height nicknames: peanut, little one, tiny, etc. These don't bother me as long as people don't call me "fun sized" or "vertically challenged" .. I'm like, ".. NO I'm adorable!"

An advantage of being little is always getting to be carried - one of my hobbies!
And sometimes getting kids admission prices (for me anyway.. :rolleyes2)
And not having to duck under doorways!
And being a flyer in cheer stunts:cheer2:
