We received this same notice via email to all DDE members. My dh thought it meant everyone, regardless of method of payment or any discounts; I thought it was just for DDE members, based on everything I've been reading here on the DIS. And I'd have to assume it wouldn't apply if you weren't using your DDE discount for whatever reason (holiday blackouts, DDP, ??).

Tricia - you are correct, even for a party of 5 you are looking at $40 or so, my stance is that on regaular table service that should be fine if service is good, but at a buffet, which alot of places are that seems steep for refilling my glass a few times ...

Anyone else agree ???

I absolutly agree, however I will tip20% for O'hana (because it is not really a buffet in my mind).:beach:

Well heres the kicker..if you are on DDP..its prepaid. So they bring you a check at the end of your meal for what? The tip??? yeah okay..sounds RIDICULOUS! And in the end..if it says I owe..lets say 20 dollars and the service wasnt good I will leave what I feel is fair.

Itchin2go - - - I don't mind 18% if its a table service restaurant whereyou have to order, are served, and get good service.

My beef is adding an auto. 18% at a buffet that has highly over inflated prices to begin with.

If I actually had to pay cash, I would never go to any of those places. My wife purchasing the Dining Plan in the past makes one not really think to much about it.

Yeah - I agree 100%.

Does it state (perhaps in fine print) that the dining plan is subject to change without notice?

I just checked, and yes it does. However, I am still not believing that this is for everyone. There is no word on the DDP yet, and only the DDE.

The only reason it seems to be everyone is that the email to the DDE customers was worded poorly, and one Dis'er called Disney Dining and heard it was for everyone.

I am firmly keeping my glass half full right now. :goodvibes

That Dis'er called DDE not Disney Dining

I just emailed them my opinion of this absurd idea and it was a very undisneylike email to be sure.
I really hope EVERYONE will email them immediately that they will not stand for this outrage.

by the way I always tip more than 18% unless there is a Darn good reason not too.

This is total BS! On our counterservice too? I think I have go to re-evaluate my purchase of the dining plan now and really make a comparision chart. I would never tip 18% for counterservice, in face we don't tip there ever...its like fast food.
And 18% is way too high for buffets. grrrrrrr
I tip based on service I receive, not what WDW decides for me.

The DDP brochure is crystal clear for the gratuity in 2008. they would also be unable to change the gratuity policy for 2008.

They can and have made changes before mid-year. They changed breakfast CS to not allow a dessert. When this changed they sent us a postcard informing us of the change. The brochures all say subject to change. Until I get another one of those postcards I think it's just DDE getting the auto-tip. I think they used that wording to make DDE people think the auto-tip was happening to everyone not just everyone using the DDE.

Ok so I am confused...is this for ONLY DDE people or EVERYONE?

Tricia --- I don't care if its just for people on the DDE or not, it is inexcuseable, Disney should not make that choice for you or anyone else ...

I think "everyone" means everyone with DDE. But not that it matters, I think everyone should eat off-site. Go Applebees !!!

Counter Service, I believe, will not be affected. The only time that it *may* be affected would be when the DDE discount can be used at the CS locations. I doubt that it's the case even then, but it's the only time it could be affected.

They can't charge you an 18% gratuity at Cosmic Ray's if you don't use your DDE card there.

I personally think that some of the servers do not deserve a tip. We must all admit that there have been many that have had some bad attitudes and just do not care.

I have no problem rewarding good/great service. I also have no problem pointing out bad service to management.

Let's cut right to our biggest expense. If we have a Boddington's in the Rose & Crown without solid food, does 18% get tacked on? If we get a DDE card and use it here, is the answer different? How about the beverage stands around WS? I tip the bartender with every purchase, but not $1.35 for each $7.50 pint of beer.

I'm going to be one of the ones where it doesn't really bother me. On my DDE meals unless the server does a really lousy job, they get my 20% discount back rounded up to the next dollar, so before they were getting 21 - 22% tip.

Now, unless the service is exceptional, they will only get their 18%.
