Hi,
I am going to disney in December and decided that doing a little pin trading sounded like fun. However I am absolutely new to this, and had no disney pins. I have started to collect the 100 year of disney pins for myself and each week I have bought an extra 1 or 2 to trade down at disney. Do you think people will want these pins or will everyone have them already? I am just wondering if I am wasting my money.

Thanks!
Melissa :)

They make great traders! If nothing else because of their low price! I think they will be very popular down there!
I've been buying extras for the same reason. They are pretty, popular and fairly inexpensive. (Inexpensive until you buy scads of them, like me!;) )
In the parks I have traded VERY little, except with CM's. (Bawk, bawk, bawk -- just call me chicken. :jester: )
Have fun!

Luv2Roam, I'm right there with you - bawk, bawk! I have mostly traded with CMs at WDW although I did branch out in August during the pin event. I think I did well!

I think it wasn't until our third trip as pin collectors that we had the courage to trade with other than CMs.

And when we first tested the waters at WoD, I think we got a little shark-bit -- but not too bad.

I had a great time trading in August. By then, I knew to steer clear of anyone that seemed to get my radar going.

I sure wish my radar had steered me to JudithM -- she's one of the many DIS members I didn't meet in August. :(

I can't wait until our next trip, next month, to go to the Friday night meets at the Contemporary. It sounds like a wonderful weekly pin party. :D

Start of slowly, decide what character or theme you would like to collect. When I first started I thought one of each would be ok. Then I found out that they release too many pins to try and collect everyone. It quickly can snowball and before you know it cha ching, you spend way too much ca$h on the pin$. So I just collect the ones that I like.

I'm not sure which disney park you are going to, but it if is Walt Disney World, be sure to stop by the Contemporary (2nd floor where they sell pins) on Friday nights at 7pm. They have an 'unofficial' pin meet there, you can meet some of the members of the disboard there and probably Kathryn (aka Pintrader). They are a great group of people that can help you out when you are just starting out. They are the ones that told be about the boards and pinpics.com.

Since you're just starting out, trade with CM's, since they're also fun to talk to. As you get more comfortable, you can start trading with others.

I ran accross this URL when I was surfing, this person is really acurate about his descriptions.

Good luck and happy pin trading.

Some park guests may want to trade for the DS pins, but they will be good for trading with Cast Members with lanyards. The only way to knw is to give it a try.
Have fun, but beware. This is an addictive hobby.

Thanks for all the great advise. I continued to buy extra pins today, and am looking forward to trading with the cms.

Thanks again!
Melissa :)

At WDW, the CM's wear lanyards and have to trade with you for anything on their lanyard provided they don't already have the pin. It's an easy way to break into trading without running into sharks.

As a local at WDW, I have been waiting for out of towners to bring in the DS pins. With all the excitement here at WDW I have had very little time to go get the Disney store pins. So be sure and find me on Friday nights.

Oh, be careful down there at Worlds of Disney, some of the traders are very nice but I don't even go down there any more, and I know what I am doing. My main problem is I get in trouble. If I see someone being taken advantage of I speak up. As a matter of fact I am learning Japanese so I can help the Japanese traders.

See ya around!

Karen

Hi Melissa

When you come down to WDW, this is my personal invitation to you to the Contemporary pin meet on Friday nights, you will be my honored guest since you are a newbie we will be most happy to show you ropes, and yea and pins too, and introduce you to some of the nicest people you have ever met.

The meets on Friday night though unofficial at first, have become so popular that it's now an official event, and information about it is handed out to guests that are checking in.

Kathryn Bell started the pin meets because many people new to pin trading ended up at other places, and got really shark bitten, they got a sour taste in their mouths and quit pin trading all together.

I was one of those people, after meeting Kathryn, we gave it one more try, and well over 1000 pins later here we are.

Don't get me wrong there are lots of nice people down there at the other pin trading stations, I have traded with both sharks and non sharks, but its professional pintrading to the max, with a lot of sharks looking for new prey.

The Friday night pin meets at the Contemporary are very very family oriented, as a matter of fact this Friday I ended up with about a 16 month old boy, the family felt so comfortable that they let him stay with us, and pin traded while me and their son discovered the fine art of popping balloons.

We love new people and love to educate you on the fine art of pins, and if you have never been to Disney World before I offer my services as tour guide (hey any excuse to go to Disney) my family and I will be more than happy to take you around, and even ride the rides with you.

You do like rides like Tower of Terror, Rockin Roller coaster, and river rapids don't you. Hmmmm.

Here are some simple examples of Shark Tatics. Learn them well.

Your DS pins are valuable, and you would be a great target, an example would be a shark showing you some of the new Japanese flex pins, they are very beautiful, but also very common… they will tell everything about the pin except that its common, this is a hard pin to get is the story you will get, and you might trade one or two of you prized pins to get it.

They look through your book if they see nothing of interest they will not even offer to show you their book and brush you off.

They brush off kids to the side thinking they offer nothing of interest.

Beware good pin evil, husband and wife teams, husband is willing to trade but wife starts to complain that this is their favorite pin, then they either start to fight, she gets instantly sad and weepy, you feel bad and offer more pins for her prized pin, or if you want to stop the trade then the show really begins.

Or the famous your pin is not that rare, actually its very common, and not worth much pin, but wait here let me get you a second opinion… Come here total stranger that I have never met with before, (wink wink) look at this pin is it valuable. Hmmm no not at all it's a common nothing pin I throw those away they rust my other pins.

Thank you all for the advice. Raulandpinboy thank you so much for the invite to the meeting. Unfortunately I am arriving on a Saturday and departing on a Wednesday. Otherwise I would have accepted without a second thought! Thanks for the warning on what people might do. I am thinking about limiting my trading to CM's and other dis members (looking for that lime green ribbon). Please look for me too (dec 29-Jan 2)! I will probably be the only one with a nasa pin on my backpack. (I work there).

Keep smiling
Melissa :)

I'm with you, Barb. The FEW times I have been to WDW I've stuck to trading solely with the CMs. I don't want to be shark bait but I also don't have much of a collection. I'm a *small fish* and don't have many tradeables. I'm collecting some extra TDS pins too so I have something to trade with CMs WHEN I make it to FL again (which I hope is soon)! :D I'd definitely check out the Contemporary meet on Fri nights. Hi, Ed!!!

Good news Melissa after an overwhelming demand by the legions this Saturday, we were asked to hold a Saturday pin meet, it was impromptu this Saturday but we had so many people there that we said okay lets keep doing it.

And it worked out better because I could troll the parks and just jump to the Contemporary via monorail.

So see you Saturday as well gang, Melissa if you want email me and I'll give a list of our cell phone numbers so if you have any questions you can call us.

I know seems weird a bunch of people you have never met wanting to take you around the parks, and giving you their cell phone numbers. But after all we're not normal people, we are pin people, and we are the most weird.

Actually we just want to check out your pins before the others get a chance to talk you out of them.:D

Hi Deb is it getting cold in Maryland Brrrrrrr, weeeelllll come to Florida its warm here yummmmm.:D :p

Hi, been reading this thread with interest. Last year at Christmas my 8 year old granddaughter noticed the pin trading at DL. We're going in a few weeks for our first trip to WDW. YEHHHH!!!!!!! Thanks to ebay she has about 20 pins to take with her for trading. Probably nothing of great value but it's all about her having fun. Thanks for all the great advice that's been posted. I do have one silly question though. How do you keep the pins from falling off the lanyard? Is there a special back that I can buy?? Thanks in advance to any who respond to this post.

Hi Doxiemom

If you bring your granddaughter to our pin meets at the Contemporary, on Fridays, and now Saturdays too, (a shameless plug) I'll see to it she gets a few more trading pins.

To answer your question yes there is a way to save your pins from falling off, I have a little product I use to lock my pins into place.

Email me if you would like some information on them.

Since you're just starting out, trade with CM's, since they're also fun to talk to.

Yes we are...I wear my lanyard faithfully...Goodluck and welcome to the wonderful world of Pin trading..:D
