Before I Strangle My Husband... Do professional painters take off doors to paint?

I have no idea about professional painters... We bought our house about the same time as you guys did. I grew up in a house where my Dad was Mr. Fix-It, remodeled a 1914 house himself, only hired out replacing the electrical service. My DH grew up in a house where his parents barely even painted.

So to make my life easier, I told him I would handle all the painting. He did help me tape stuff off, and remove tape, but that was about it. I did it when he was at work, so there were no "why don't you do this..." conversations. I wish I had help, but I know that would have only meant WWIII and taken twice as long. This is based on me watching DH do the dishes and trying to put together furniture. It's just better if I don't watch (dishes) or just do it myself (furniture). He completely freaked out when he couldn't get a saddle valve in the basement to stop leaking. Found out, he was only using his hand. "It felt tight." I got up there with a wrench and it was fine.

Back to the topic, I did not remove the bathroom door, but I wasn't doing trim. BTW, I hate painting the bathroom...too small of space, and working around the toilet

Hope - We are the same way. Dh is brillant at some things ... home maintance is not one of them. However, I am proud of being able to get that stuff done and figure everything out. My mom was here this week and was telling me that she was so impressed with how I get the job done around the house and figure everything out .... We came home after not having power for three days and had to prime the water pump. Took me a while to figure it out but I did on my own ... Dh would have called the plumber before even trying to figure it out.

I think a lot of it is that I am cheap. I refuse to pay someone to do something I can do myself ... plus I like learning new things!

Okay, so I worked for a painter/finishing carpenter for a few years. We only took off the doors if we were either painting the doors or the door jams...

Ugh! I agree! I don't mind (and actually like) painting bedrooms or bigger rooms. I HATE bathrooms with all of the tight spaces and stuff to paint around . My bathroom has been "in the process" of being painted since last July! Every time I look at it or start again I get so annoyed .

I've worked with 3 different professional painters in the last 4 years...none of them removed the door. None of them painted trim, door jams or the actual door though.

I have never had a painter here that removed a door to paint.

Me neither -- & I've had a couple different companies.

Do professional painters take doors off to paint rooms? (Not to paint the DOOR, we are not painting the door.)

Just for future reference Megs, when your dh is painting or repairing something that is THE perfect time to go shopping, driving, walking or visiting.

I learned long ago that when dh takes out the tools, I find somewhere to go.

It keeps down the chance of us killing each other.

Our painter is wonderful! And he has NEVER taken off any of the doors,ahaha That just seems so funny to me, why bother?? Even after all of the painting, no paint on the doors.

I might in a small space like that. It would make it easier getting behind and above the doors. I know you have the small window, but he needs some good ventilation too. Unless you got the no odor kind. Truthfully, it'd take you all but a few seconds to pop the nails out of the holes... of course I would worry about him getting it back up there afterwards.

Having my house professionally painted now. No doors have been removed.

If I paint, of always remove sliding closet doors but never regular doors.

My DH is a painter and he says the only reason to remove the DOORS is if you are spraying several doors at one time. Since you are not painting the doors, there is no reason to take the door off to paint around it. Things are hard for painters right now (lack of business - economy), so if you live close enough he can come help out!

I probably would have taken them off, but mainly for space and air circulation. We have two small bathrooms. There's no way I could let anyone close themselves up in a bathroom they were painting; that's scary!

The project/shop light thing is funny, though.

You all would be happy (or entertained ) to know that, while painting the ceiling today, DH took the door off.

All of a sudden, I hear this BOOM BOOM BOOM. I am like, "What happened?" He says, "I am taking this freaking door off." He struggles, then asks for my help. I am like, "Oh no, I told you it wouldn't be easy to take off." In the end, I DID help. Now the door is gracing our office.

DH spent a summer once doing house and apartment painting and says they took the doors off. He said "It only takes a minute to pull the pins out and move the door"
