Before I Look For A New Bank

When I use online banking with my current bank I often get a message that the account information I'm seeing might not be up to date, which means current transactions aren't showing on the screen. It is really frustrating when I'm ready to balance my account and can't see accurate information. Before I switch to a new bank is this typical of online banking? I otherwise like the bank itself, but I rely heavily on my online access and it is getting really frustrating.

my stuff is usually very up to date - i have caught my husband at mcd's before with it. haha!

We use PNC and their site is very up to date. I can make a transaction on line and it shows immediately on PNC's account site.

Not typical. We see things go thru immediately. I'd look up specific info on the bank you want to switch to though. If you go with one of the top big banks you shouldn't have a problem. Little banks and credit unions seem to have slower systems

I work at a small credit union, and our stuff is totally up to date. Instantly. And that's with a teeny tiny tech department really (we only have 12 branches total, hence not what a larger company would have). On very rare occasion our site will go down, but I think that's happened maybe twice in the past year and each time has been for a very short period, one of them because they were majorly revamping the site. Not having up to date information would be very, very annoying to me.

Now having said that, if they just don't have that a check has cleared or what not, the banks are omnipresent, but I know our debit card transactions usually show up within minutes (from experience). And our site shows you essentially whatever we can see in branch when we bring up your account.

And if you're interested in a small and great credit union feel free to PM me :goodvibes

My bank has all transactions online immediately. I never have to worry about transactions not being shown

I have TD Bank and I can take $ out of the ATM, go upstairs to my office, log into my account and it already shows up in the transactions. No delays!

My bank (5/3) will show things in pending, but they do show them as coming out of your balance, but until they clear, they are still considered pending by them. I too have called my hubby to ask why he stopped at Burger King, when I packed him a lunch :confused3 he wasnt amused :rotfl2:

Your bank is not typical. Both of our banks show transactions immediately (within a minute).

often banks will put the phrase that all transactions are not available because of the way merchants handle their charges/credits that are out of the banks control

three transactions that I can think of that don't immediately show up are the ones when you pay at the pump and use the credit option...most places will put a hold on your acct for $1 then let you get your gas and then charge the whole amount a day or two later...there are also a few cases where a merchant may authorize your card for a amount one day where you see it, it'll drop off that night like it never happened, then actually be deducted a day or two later (my monthly WDW AP payment does this)...this happens more (but not often) if you select credit instead of debit if given a choice... also credits from merchants may take a few days to actually post even if you see then one day

I've never seen a case where debit charges aren't immediately deducted

Most bank online systems are "real time" with their core, so the information is current. Just ask about this as you shop around.

Thanks everyone. I had two paychecks direct deposited yesterday and they weren't showing up at 11:00 last night so i think it's time to shop for a bank.

even my small regional bank shows stuff up immediately... my dh was paying the water bill the other day (by phone they dont have a website) and it showed up before he was even off the phone with them. I just happened to be checking the account as he was paying it. www.knbt.com is ours.

I think all banks have that little clause. Some merchants don't send in the CC transactions till the end of the night, but for the most part you'll never see this happen.

Pay at the pumps are the biggest culprit of pinging your account for a $1 to unlock the pump, but taking a day or two to process it for the full amount. Although in California, they ping your account for $75 for Credit, $100 for debit to pay at the pump, which can wreck havoc on your account when you need the money in there.

Now there is a difference between pending and completed transactions. Credit transactions will usually pend till the night, and clear overnight. However, the transaction should show up online. With my bank, if there is a transaction pending, it will hold the funds till it goes through, making that money unavailable.

In this case, I would definitely change banks. That's ridiculous. If you get paid on Friday, ADP (or whoever your paycheck issuer is) sends the info to the bank on Wednesday to post on Friday morning. There's no reason it shouldn't show up until 11pm!!!

I bank with TD and everything shows up right away (except pay at the pump gasoline purchases if I use it as credit rather than debit). I get direct deposit, too, and I call them the night before around 9:30 or so and they can tell me how much the pending direct deposit is. The deposit then shows up at 6am on Friday morning.
