Beets, Buzzers & Bathroom Floors: My Harrowing Adventures at DLR! Updated 7/7

Oh wow! That would have been scary to be evacuated like that. I'm glad it turned out OK.
Thanks Jenna. I think I was so tired that I didn't realize what was happening, and I just assumed that one of the kids staying there had pulled the fire alarm or something.

I can't imagine why you didn't do Magic Mornings the next day.;):rotfl:
 I know! It's not a good idea to drag me into the parks when I'm sleepy, grumpy, and annoyed--three of my favorite dwarves!

Well dang! Talk about an experience. I have to say I've always wondered how n evacutaion of a hotel would really work. We've all seen the little things on the back of the doors and what not telling you what to do but how many of us have ever actually had to leave the hotel in the middle of the night for a possible emergency?
So true! I never really pay much attention to those, but I think I will now.

I think I would have been absolutely terrified, and probably would ahve been wide awake for the rest of the night unless I had heard then and there what really happened.
My nieces didn't sleep much after that, but DH, DS and I did OK.

Just hope the interrupted sleep didn't make the day hard other than missing out on your planned MM!
Thanks! I think we actually managed to have a pretty good day--although we did throw in an afternoon nap. I'll try to post details from day 2 sometime soon.

Welcome Lisa! Thanks for reading!

I've been gone since yesterday, but I'll try to get an update up soon!

This is almost the last entry without pictures, I promise! I finally got into the photography groove on the 3rd day of the trip, so here’s one more photo-free day:

Remember how we all woke up at 3 a.m. this morning? Well, after that happened, I thought we’d mutually agreed to sleep in a bit. The problem is that my definition and my parents’ definition of sleeping in are not the same. I woke up about 8:30 - 9:00ish and found that everyone but me, DS, and DH had already gone. So I got ready, had some breakfast, and headed for the shuttle.

We arrived at DL, stood in line for the stroller rental, and got a call from my sister saying they were done with DL and were ready to go to DCA. So, we got out of the stroller line and waited for them.

I was so excited for DCA because it was the Food & Wine Festival, and I was hoping to attend at least one or two of the free demonstrations. When I told my mom that the morning demonstration was by Ghiradelli, she was interested, and my sister was too. So, DH and I went with my sister and the girls on Soarin’ (how much do I love that ride?), and then my mom, my sister and I jumped in line for the demonstration. DH took the girls on California Screamin’ and TOT. My dad decided he wanted to go to the demo, too. We weren’t sure how DS would do (he’s not a fan of sitting still), but he came along.

I wish I could remember the name of the man from Ghiradelli (he will now be referred to as the chocolate guy), but his job is to taste chocolate. What a horrible job! Most of the time, he talked about how chocolate was made and showed us the plant and the seeds and stuff. Twas quite interesting. DS drew all over the table with the little pencils that were at our table.

And then we got to taste the chocolate. That was the good part. The chocolate guy told us how to taste chocolate (I always thought inhaling an entire Butterfinger in two seconds flat was the right way, but I learned differently!) He talked about engaging all of the senses–hearing the chocolate snap as you broke of a piece, feeling it melt between your fingers, and smelling it. After all of that, it was time to taste and try to detect all of the different flavors that are in the chocolate. This was especially evident with some of the darker stuff. We each had five squares of chocolate. One was a mint/chocolate sandwich type thing (delish), another was a caramel-filled chocolate (I gave it to DH), and the other three were dark chocolates.

I LOVE dark chocolate and my sister doesn’t, so she gave all of hers to me. There were three different kinds: 60%, 72%, and 86% (I think). I loved the 60%. It was just perfect for me. The 72% was a little dark, but still pretty good, but the 86% was a bit dark for me. It pretty much tasted like baking chocolate. When the demo was over, I needed lunch just to get the taste of chocolate out of my mouth. (I never thought I’d say that!)

This has gotten awfully long, and all this talk of chocolate is making me hungry, so I will stop now.

Stay tuned for my next entry, all about my favorite place to eat at DCA and our maiden voyage on the canal boats!

Free chocolate may just be the only thing in the world that could make DL even MORE magical. Consider me jealous.

I can't wait to read more!

It is so wonderful that you got to take a trip to the happiest place on earth with your extended family. Can't wait to read more!

Thanks! The chocolate was quite good--I wish I could have gone to more of the F&W events; I only went to two.

How long have you lived in Provo?

Thanks! We've done a few trips with my family, and we have a lot of fun. I'm already planning our next trip to WDW for a time yet to be determined!

I'm going on 4 years in Provo. College. That will probably never end. Are you familiar with the area?

Yeah. I've lived in Utah most of my life (including now).

Are you going to The College in Provo? What are you studying?

What a pity the chocolate wasn't milk as I don't like dark, good for you your sister is like me though :rotfl:

That's so awesome! Whereabouts in Utah? I'm a Health Education major with a double minor in Chemistry and English Teaching at BYU. Hence the reason I will never graduate.

:rotfl: I think dark chocolate is an acquired taste. When I was little and we'd get those bags of assorted mini Hershey bars, I'd eat the dark ones because that was what was left. Now I'm in love with the stuff. I keep seeing dark chocolate Reese's Peanut Butter Cups and pass them by because I'm trying to be a better eater.

I live in Draper. That's a whole lot of learnin' you're doing there! Are you planning on using all three in a career?

Update coming soon!

Hi all!
Sorry I've taken so long to post. I'm working on it, and I have one more before the pictures come.

I hope everyone had a happy 4th!

Count me in too!!!!

We had a fire alarm incident too at the Embassy Suites (I think right next to the Hampton) about 5 years ago at Christmas, in fact it was the same day that they had to evacuate the Grand Californian because the Christmas tree caught on fire. I heard they had to be outside for quite awhile in the middle of the night. (how awful) Atleast our fire alarm went off in the morning, sometime around 6 or 7 I believe. Our kids were all freaking out about all their stuffed puppies, so ofcourse we gathered them all up for the evacuation.:confused3

Can't wait to hear the rest.

I'm here, too! The evacuation sounded very scary. I'll bet most of the guests had trouble going back to sleep!

Hooray for free chocolate! Sounds fun! :thumbsup2

Anyway, looking forward to seeing the rest of your TR! popcorn::

*Subbing!*

Welcome! It seems like evacuations are pretty common at DLR-area hotels; we've heard lots of stories about this happening. The Embassy Suites is right next to the Hampton, and that's where we got on the ART every day--we had hotel envy; it looked quite nice. I'm glad everyone was OK after your evacuation and the puppies were safe!

Thanks and welcome!
I had no problem going back to sleep (I usually don't), but my nieces struggled after that. My younger niece was a little scared by everything, and my older niece was just ready to get up and go to the parks.

I'll try to get my next update tonight sometime.

Before I start, here is my solemn oath:
MY NEXT UPDATE WILL HAVE PICTURES! I promise.

But this one doesn't because I really didn't take any for a couple of days . . . silly me. :upsidedow

At the end of my last update, we had finished up our chocolate show and were headed to my favorite place in DCA for lunch - - Taste Pilot's Grill. I just love this place, especially the full throttle fries, which are waffle fries smothered in chili, cheese, sour cream, tomatoes and all other sorts of fatty yumminess.

DS was getting a little tired, but the ART takes a break on weekdays between 1:30 and 2:30, so we had to wait. We tried to ride Mike and Sully, but it broke down right before we got on the ride. So we went to Muppetvision, and then tried Mike and Sully again. This time, it was working, and I really enjoyed it.

We were still waiting for the ART break to be over and thought we could take DS to see Turtle Talk. He didn’t make it, so we had to use the secret exit and leave early. We all got back to the hotel for a well-needed nap (for both DS and me).

So, there was a nap, and then it was back to DL and Rancho del Zocalo for dinner. It was OK–probably the least favorite of the places we ate, but it wasn’t terrible. After BTMRR and IASW, everyone was ready to go, but my mom said she’d take DS back to the hotel if DH and I wanted to stay. So, we agreed and said goodbye to DS and the fam.

I remember the times DH and I have spent alone in the parks, staying at WDW until it closed at 1 a.m. or standing in line for Space Mountain very late at night (when it re-opened at DL a few years ago). I guess we’re old now, because I think we rolled in from our night at DL at about 8:30–we’re just wild and crazy!

We did Buzz Lightyear and the teacups, but the highlight for me was the canal boats. I had never been on them before, and I was so excited to try them! It did not disappoint.
First of all, we had a great CM named Lenny who sounded like a late-night radio DJ–very cool and mellow. Second, half of the people in the boat didn’t speak English, so when Lenny told us all to stand up, only half of us did, which led to a few tipping issues. But the best part was that DH was sitting across from a very outgoing nine-year-old girl. As we began our journey into the mouth of the whale, she said “Let’s hold hands!” and grabbed DH’s hands and held them as we traveled around (I don’t think she’ll have any problems getting a boyfriend in a few years). DH wasn’t exactly sure what to do, but they played rock, paper, scissors and some other games. It was a great time.

So, that was the first full day in the parks!

Soon, I will post the next day–and there will be pictures, I swear!

Those fries sound delicious! I love fatty yumminess!

That 9-year-old sounds adorable! A little awkward for your DH.....but still cute! :goodvibes

*Eagerly awaits TR pics* popcorn::

I like your sense of humor and writing style...subbing! Looking forward to photos of the fun, too! popcorn::

Me too! I could eat those fries every day. It's good I don't live closer to DCA, or I'd have to be rolled around in the parks! ;)

It was pretty funny. DH is very good with kids (and most people), so he just had fun with it.
