Hi Guys

I have been listening to John Williams in concert and it got me thinking. Is Williams not not one on the greatest composers and writers of our time ? Indeed is he not up there with the greatest of all time ? We listen to the masters like Beethoven, Mozart etc but is not Williams a master of our time ? Every composition I listen to is iconic. I would advocate that in 100 years time Williams will be regarded as a great. Why does it always have to be posthumous. Enjoy why you can. Hasn’t Covid taught us that ?

John Williams is a musical genius and that is well acknowledged. Symphonies regularly have concerts that feature an entire night of his movie themes. Last year I rewatched the Star War prequels and even though I didn't enjoy the movies anymore than I did as a kid, I did have positive things to say about the music. The sequel trilogy was okay, but there are some really facinating things with music. I love the themes he did for Harry Potter, Jaws, ET, Jurrasic Park, Schindler's List, Indiana Jones, and other equally memorable themes.

If anyone is a fan of his work and can afford to go see one of his movies with an orchestra doing live score attend the event. The movie is on the screen, but a live orchestra is playing along providing the soundtrack. I have been to multiple events and they are fantastic. I always leave with a much greater appreciation of the music.

Not sure why this is in the Universal forum. Williams has received a truckload of awards during his lifetime, he is a celebrated and well-regarded composer. What precisely do you want for him before he dies?

OMG YES. We haven't missed a single Harry Potter movie presentation. Absolutely amazing.

I guess it all depends on whether you learn this at school or whether your education comes from Google or Wikipedia. My point is that when in a music class you are taught about the greats like Mozart, Strauss, Beethoven. In the 21st century do they mention greats like Williams ? Probably not but why ? He should be. I am aware of the awards. But surely it is about the historic recognition not trophys.

Why Universal ? Because does he not have a strong association with Universal and Spielberg in particular. But hey I bow to your expertise.

It sort of makes sense why this is on the Universal Studios board. The two directors that Williams has worked with most frequently/his most memorable collaborations are George Lucas and Steven Spielberg. He did all the Star Wars films that that's now part of Disney. Some of his Spielberg collaborations are/were referenced at Universal.

The original post is kind of on-topic and kind of off-topic for this board.

John Williams for my tastes. He has done so many movie themes that a movie seems almost cheap to me if he doesn't do the music.

The question is will anyone be listening to Williams in 200 years like we listen to Beethoven and Mozart today.
