I haven't been on the Rent/Trade Board in a very long time, but DH & I are planning a trip to WDW in October, just us 2.

I have a ressie at BW but if I could rent points for that time it the cost could be almost cut in half. I don't want to use our points that we have remaining for this year for different reasons.

Anyway, upon looking at some of the threads I see many posters that are renting with very few posts (in some cases 4, 5, or even 1). What's up with that?

Is it still a good idea to try to rent points from someone? The one & only time we did it was about 4 years ago. We had a great experience with our rentee & after that we bought into OKW.

Am I being over cautious or what?

i think it could be dangerous
to rent from someone, without a history on disboards.com
over several years
posts show the person, is not "flying in" to just take your $
and run

maybe
i am to cynancial??

I was thinking the same thing. I guess I am cynical also.

I'm not sure I'd rent from them unless I had some way of confirming that they are DVC members. Even then I'd be inclined to only want to pay using a credit card that way if they don't follow thru, I could at least file a claim.

I'd stick with the ones who have a good rep at renting, and even then I'd rent them to be transfered rather than have them make the reservations.

Could just be me, but I wonder if a lot more people are buying points just to rent them out, or at least a percentage of them. So maybe they're not interested in the DIS for anything but renting.

And of course, there's always the risk that they changed their user name just to rent; perhaps they had a bad experience before?

I'd certainly feel better renting from someone who was established here on the boards. Plus, you can get a feel for them from their posts.

This crossed my mind also!

I would feel better also. The last person we rented from seemed very established on the boards with a lot of posts. Maybe I should try to contact him again, even though it's been a while.

are you a currnet dvc member(you say you have points but dont want to use them)?

why not just get someone who is willing to transfer their points to your account instead of flat out renting them. This way you have all the control over the points.

with this method you could have alot of options, use the transfered points for reservation, use you current points and save your transfered points etc etc.

Couldn't you use a pay verification system like PayPal, to cover the transaction?

theres alot of well established members who rent/transfer their points, I wouldnt worry about using the exact same person as before.

although nothing is completely safe-theres contracts both renter-rentee can use and a simply email exchanging names and info can help ease minds. Of course soemone could lie in the email as well

We are members at OKW. How does a transfer work?

theres still some risk associated with it, but...

a current dvc member calls member services and tells them they want to transfer "x" amount of points to your account.

once transfered the points are yours to use or bank(so long as you bank them in time obvioulsy). no one else to rely on to make reservations, changes, cancellations etc

sometimes member services asks the transferer for the full account number of the members account they are transfering to, but I have done it with the last 4 digits of the account, the use year of the account, and the names on the account--this way you dont have to give your full account nuymber out

you have to arrange payment w/the transferer--usually you pay first then they call. points are available to use within 24-48 hours and they maintain their original use year

I may be misunderstanding your post. Is your current ressie at BW for cash? If so, there is not a very good chance that you can even get a room for points at BW in Oct. I don't think you can just change a cash ressie to a points ressie. Or maybe you are thinking of staying at another resort with points? Or maybe you are thinking of getting an already-made ressie on the rent/trade board?

I agree with jekjones. Watchimg the Boards has definitely given me the impression that BWV is pretty much sold out for October.

I agree that renting points is a risk that you take. However I disagree that you should be scared of renting from someone that has a low number of posts. I have read and chimed in some on this board for a year or so but don't have a whole lot of posts. I am just too busy to get into the big conversations that get going on some of the boards, so only post when I have a real interest, or valid input. I have noticed as well that some people post multiple times on the same topics, etc. without much input.

We have had to rent our points out before and have several repeat users that I just can't talk into joining DVC...don't know why. So we have great references but just not high numbers on this board. I do agree that there seem to be some people on the rent/trade board that have huge numbers of points to rent all the time.....don't know what to think of that.

Just my 2 cents on the topic.

Thanks!

I agree. I think sometimes we get to feeling pretty comfortable on these boards. We start to think everyone is as WDW crazy as we are, and we are all a sort of "family". Unfortunately, that makes us very easy targets. Sometimes we get to be so "trusting" that we forget to be cautious. I guess my thing is this...there are a lot of people renting points, and renting is all about trust. I would definitely rent from someone I trust, and unfortunately...for me, how many posts the person has would have a HUGE impact on that.

Just my .02

P.S. Hi jekjones!!! I think about you all the time!!!! :love2:

Transferring points is definitely the safest and easiest.
Disney will do a 3 party call so that you can call in with other person on the line and tell Disney to take X points out of your account to transfer to Tinkerbelle. Then the MS cuts out the Tink and you give MS your account number. Then Tink comes back on, and you are cut out while Tink gives her account number.

As for paying: IF you pay through Paypal WITH a credit card...and the points never get transferred, you just call your CC co. and decline the charge.

Someone on another thread recently mentioned that they forgot their password and had to reregister. That happened to me when I was a newbie...and I had to reregister and lost my original posts (and had to change from Co. Belle to Co. Belle1....so sometimes the number of posts doesnt' accurately reflect how'much of a Dis-er you are! :goodvibes

While I used to think that the renter needed to be more trusting with regard to buying points, another thread raises the question of the owners being responsible for even the credit card charges of a guest (or renter.) Luckily, most of the people here really ARE trustworthy, and rental problems seem to be quite rare insofar as transactions on these boards. Some of the ebay stuff seems a little scary tho!

One point about transfers....if you've transferred OUT you can't transfer IN to your account in the same use year.

I am considering renting some of my extra points but I am of the opinion that I would rather transfer the points as this frees both parties from additional coordination. Since the points are transferred, the new owner has complete control and eliminates one extra hassle. As others have mentioned, there is a risk involved for both parties. The thread about the owners being responsible for bills of the guests is really scary.

Do you have a cash reservation for Oct?

I do have a cash reservation with a AAA rate made for October, but it was made through CRO & it is at the Boardwalk Hotel - not the Villas.

It just occurred to me last night that if I rented points at the Villas I could cut my cash cost in half almost so I figured I would look into it. If it doesn't work, it doesn't work. I can't believe I didn't think of renting when we originally planned the trip a few months ago. :confused3

Honestly, BWV or BCV would be nice as it would be just DH & I and it will be during the F&WF. OKW is an option for us also.

Thanks for all your input. I did get a response from a rentee, they're going to check for availability Monday & she has references that she would give me. I can use a credit card to pay, not just check, so that is good.

I guess I'll have to wait until tomorrow to see what's available though.

Im confused here, you are or are not a member? If you are- You can call and check on availabilty yourself! you dont need someone else to call for you!

you are within the 7 month at all those resorts-then if its available do a transfer of points DONT rent them. Its the same thing, costs the same, but you OWN the points

renting is typically for non-memeber and tranferring is for members-unless you are renting for a pre-booked time frame that no longer is available.
