I have a DS going into third grade this year. He will probably have a bed time of 9:30. His bus in the morning comes at about 8:25.

I wish he would go to bed earlier but he just doesn't seem to need the sleep. He has always needed less sleep than normal for his age. He gave up taking naps when he was only two.

Right now he is going to cub scout camp which has an 8:00 bus. Most nights he doesn't fall asleep until about 11:00 and this is after a full day of camp followed by a baseball game on about half the days (his team is playing in a tournament and has 2 to 3 games per week). I do make him go in his room at 9:30 but he never falls asleep then.

My dd11 usually goes to bed before my ds8 and is asleep right after her head hits the pillow.

He has a twin in the midwest! I aim for 10 during the school year and don't care in the summer. He will go up to bed around 11-11;30 and read and is often (summer) still reading when I go up at 12:30 or 1. Luckily he doesn't have to leave for school till about 8:10 so 10-10:30 works, he's a boy so he can dress and eat in about 15 minutes!

His older sister is even worse! She never napped, he at least lasted till about 2. She is up very late but at 17 I don't care she is the one who has to suffer if she is sleepy!

I try for about 9- but they usually read for a bit then they turn out ther light and go to sleep- our bus doesn't come until 845 so I usually get them up about 10 min till 8 or so. It will be a hard adjustment when we have to get up for middle school in a few years thet bus come at 625 :scared1:!

After 9 - sometimes well after 9. They know what time they have to get up the next morning and they have to deal with the consequences of bad decisions. They have learned to go to bed at a reasonable hour, but they don't need 12 hours sleep every night...

My DD and DS will be going into 3rd grade at the end of the month, and we are planning on the 8 PM bedtime as it has been for a few years. They usually fall right asleep, although sometimes they will ask if they can read. They do read 20 minutes a day (while I'm making dinner) but also know that they can't watch TV after bedtime, so this gives them a little winding down time.

As they are getting older, we may move it back to 8:30, but we will start with 8 and see how it goes. They are usually on this same schedule for the summer as we have to leave for camp 10 minutes before we would catch the bus for school, but with my son in summer baseball, we have had very late nights and it has definitely taken their toll.

We get home from the games around 8:30 - 8:45, then a shower an dsnack and bedtime has been more like 9:30 - 10 and I'm dragging them out of bed at 7 for camp.

This is the last week of baseball, so we will start to move bedtime back to a normal hour for the last 3 weeks to get on track for school.

We start winding down at 7:30. The kids get cleaned up, change into pjs etc and head upstairs. We usually read from 8 - 8:30 depending on how fast or slow they were getting ready for bed then we try for lights out.

DD8 is like some of the pp kids, she doesn't need as much sleep for some reason. She'll keep reading or write in a journal most nights until 9. Then it has to be lights out!

DS6 is asleep within 2 minutes of lights out at 8:30 most nights!

I have an 8/yo son as well. He will be in 3rd grade this coming yr & bedtime will be 8-8:30. usually we try to get the kids to bed by 8, so that they can settle down and fall asleep by 8:30. We may modify since we just moved and his 'wake up' time will be changing.

My DS8 is starting 3rd grade this year as well. He is in bed during the school year between 8-8:30. His brother has to get up around 6:30 for an earlier bus to the middle school, but he usually gets up with him. If not, I wake him by 7AM.

Now, often times, there is horsing around, talking, etc in there and it takes a few reminders for them to go to sleep. I would say 90% of the time they are out cold by 9PM.

Summer is a different story. They usually head to bed about 9 unless something special was going on or we are out.
