I've been following the thread on teen bedtimes with some interest, as it doesn't surprise me at all that many of them stay up very late, or even all night, on vacation. What surprised me was that some people were amazed at that!
Personally, even tho' we are crotchety adults, hubby and I often stay up waaaaay too late on the ships. The worst was probably the night when Tony was up till almost 4 a.m. yakking with some of the crew members, and I have hit 3 a.m. myself. So are we just strange, or do any of you other "big kids" stay up that late on your cruise? Come on, fess up...don't just blame it on the teens!
And for the record, I must say that in all 19 cruises we have always seen the teens acting very well-mannered (with one very rare exception, when we were watching the deck cam and watched someone smash the basketball backboard by hanging on it). Teens can be rowdy and like to have a good time, but that doesn't mean they should be stereotyped as troublemakers. I'm just realous that I don't have their stamina!

My DH and I also turn into night owls on vacations. Staying up late is half of the fun. I have been reading this board for the past month since we decided to look into taking a cruise. I think I found this board by way of your web site! Thanks for creating and maintaining a great Web site. We are currently shopping for the best price we can get for a 7 day October cruise. We are hoping to book our first Disney Cruise this week.

No they are no bad at all and stay up all night.

lol

I am a night owl and my kids pretty much take after me... I can stay up till 2am easy... my daughter 14 usualy is up on the weekends past me. My boys 13 and 11 are up till 1am easy. And fairly well behaved. (of course they have their moments when they are together)

The oldest and youngest will be rooming with me and hubby .. the middle child will be rooming with grandpa and his cousin who is his age. Grandpa has already told me and my sister the boys will have their own key to the room and will not have any kind of cerfew. We agreed and told grandpa he is in total charge... if something happens the captain or whomever can call him. lol I plan on doing the same with my daughter.. I want my 11 year old in bed by 1am though since I have a feeling we will be getting up early and he is the bear when he doesn't get enough sleep.

Now that I am totally off topic.. lol

57 days and counting. *gets giddy*

My ten year old was out after us every night. He had a midnight curfew. I was in bed early the first couple of night but then enjoyed finding a comfy chair and reading before I went to bed. The nights I went to bed early, I enjoyed getting up very early and walking around a peaceful quiet boat. My husband is a morning person - gets up at 4:3O every morning to go to work.

Just because it's vacation, I see no reason to go totally way off schedule. Things are different enough. We did let the kids stay up later than usual every night but by the end of the week, they were still cranky. The first night off the boat, on the way home, I think we all fell asleep at 8pm. I don't let them wander the streets at 2 am at home. Why should I on vacation? Plus we wanted to sight see and do things. If we stay up too late, everyone is too slow moving in the morning and quick to argue, which isn't fun for anyone.

My DH is a night owl...I am a morning person. I did stay up way later than my normal bedtime on our cruise....but my DD(13) stayed up way later than mom! I think everynight but the first night, we were in the room way before DD dragged herself in. I have great pictures of her sleeping in the morning...good for blackmail...or showing the boyfriends!

me (13) and my sis (15) were on the 3/2-3/9 cruise. i agree, our group wasnt even near the staterooms late at night we were usually on deck 9 just hanging by the pool or in studio sea when the dances were going on and we were not loud or rude at all. thanx for defending all the teens!!!!!!!!

i have to agree with atigeg and peter pans family on this one! on the Carnival cruises i have been on, the teeangers were look down on if we were up late and walking around on the cruiseship. But on the disney cruise staying up late was half the fun! and believe me i saw some adults walking around late just talking, and having fun! i mean ,you are on vacation, you are suposed to have FUN! the only problem that mom had was us comming in at 3am and making noise that woke her up! but other then that she was totally cool about me and my friends staying out late! THANKS MOM!

We're on the magic in August, and my 16 year old DS will have a curfew. I haven't decided what it will be yet, I'm kind of playing that by ear for now.

In all honesty, he goes to bed between 8:30-9:00pm normally, as *late* as 11:00pm on the weekends ;) and he really needs to get a good nights sleep (or he turns into the Grumpmonster) so my bet is that even on the cruise he won't be out much later than midnight or so, even if I give him a later curfew.

Im actually wondering how late I will be able to hold out on our vacation. Since all of our recent vacations have been with the kids we are usually in bed by 10:00-11:00 the latest. From reading the navigators there is stuff I want to do that is later than that. I am naturally a morning person who gets up before 5:00 and is asleep before 9:00. Im hoping a little doze by the pool each day will help me to hold out a little longer on this trip. Barb, you and Tony will have to keep DH & I up partying. ;)

Actually, we were recently watching our honeymoon video. At one point it shows us going to the midnight buffet and the time on the video was (obviously) midnight. I couldnt believe that I was actually just starting out at that hour! :D Ahh the good old days! I hope to relive some of those soon. ;)

It's funny you should mention honeymoon and midnight buffet. On our honeymoon, we set an alarm so we would wake up, walked through the buffet, and then went back to sleep. We didn't eat a thing.

SDangel, if you went to bed at 3 am, what time did you get up? Was there anything going on that late?

I can't help but think that there's a safety concern having kids (or anybody) out that late. People get tired, don't think clearly, cave into peer pressure. Common sense starts to fly out the window. I have stayed up that late at a women's weekend away but then I pay for it for a week afterwards and wonder if it was worth the fun.

karel.. well if the ship was stopped at a port, then i usually got up at like 9 or earlier if i had something to do. But i'm the kind of person who has to get up at 5 am to get ready for school, im used to waking up early, and i wake up at the slightest sounds. Usually during the cruise there was a nap up by the pool catching up on some sleep and sun if possible! i can also run on only a few hours of sleep.. what can i say? im a teenager with weird sleeping patterns. What was i doing at 3 am? just talking, sitting out at the front of the ship, or on some chairs somewhere. You will probably never meet these people again and you just wanna hear stories about them. Believe me though, we were not running around causing trouble. I was never pressured into doing anything, at that time in the morning everyone is mostly just tired but doesn't want to go back to the room.

My first job after high school was with Cunard Line I was almost 18. After a year I was eligible for my first cruise so just before my 19th birthday my two best friends and I headed out on our first cruise and our first trip without parents. I know we are probably older than the teens you are talking about but one of the important things we wanted to do was to stay up all night and watch the sunrise on deck (which we did with several other young people we met onboard). It is a favorite picture of all of ours and definitely a favorite memory.

i have to agree with angel. vasically once we got out of the dances or the activitys that went on till like 1:30 am. we then sat on deck 9 and just talked and had a few laughs. there is no pressure just talking and laughing. noboby ever complained and we kept quite when it was late (except for at the dances because they blasted the music but it was in studio sea and there were no rooms on floor 4 were studio sea was.) so, there was no problem!!:bounce: :jester: :smooth:
