Bedspreads and blankets

Does anyone know if you can bring a can of lysol on an airplane (checking the luggage in)?

I called the airline before we left for our last trip about the Lysol; the gentleman said "No aeresol can of any kind" . That also means shaving cream.

so, how do you clean a remote without ruining it by getting it wet?Do you spray lysol only, or wipe things off, then spray it?

I DO bring the Lysol sanitizing wipes, and I wipe down the remote controls, all parts of the telephone, door knobs, toilet seat and flusher, the sink fixtures and counter, and I bring a pump-style cleaning solution and sponge to clean the tub. I know this sounds like OCD, but I have been blessed with a kidney transplant (my Dad gave me his left one :p), so my immune system is compromised because of the meds I take. Since I started taking these precautions, even in my own home, I haven't been sick, thank God ;) ! I do check the beds. But I don't bring my own pillow cases, and I haven't gotten sick from using the hotel's yet :hyper:.
Hope this helps!

Oh, BTW, I'm also filing a complaint with the Dept. of Health. They do regulate hotels. If such complaints aren't filed, hotels such as this will continue to get away with such practices.

Good for you! I hope you hear some plan of action from them. And what a HORRIBLE experience at La Quinta :crazy2: :faint: ! I'm glad you could find other accomodations that were suitable.

We recently stayed at the AKL and there was urine on the carpet..which I had told my kids they were nuts, but alas, one morning when they were messing with the fans, they accidentaly turned up the heat and PHEW the odor was overwhelming. It seems that someone thought the corner by the balcony was a good place to "go". All I can say is YUCK and I have sent a letter on to them as this was noticed on the day that we left.

You CAN bring aerosol cans in your luggage as long as you are checking your luggage. No carryons. The luggage hold areas are pressurized and the cans will not explode. We always bring our can of Lysol and also my shaving cream, both are aerosol, in the checked luggage.

I was passing on what a Delta rep told me. He also said I couldn't bring it in my carry on OR in my check-in luggage. Their website also states that aeresols are PROHIBITED from all their flights. Check out their site and what they consider "Dangerous Goods". I actually checked out the site first, and then I called Delta directlyand got the answer that I did. EDITED TO ADD: The site DOES say, however, that you can bring "Personal care items such as cologne, hairspray (accepted if less than 16 ounces each and less than 70 ounces total)"

Maybe this is not the case for other airlines. If it's okay with other airlines, I'll fly with them :p !

I used to be a germ freak. I worried about everything, but have decided to try not to instill in my children my illogical fears. Sure, we could stay home and not travel, but where is the fun in that? I now apply normal parental cautions and let it go at that.

BTW, my worst two travel experiences were finding sex toys and gel in a bedroom drawer of a rental home on the beach. The other was finding food on the pillow and a bathroom covered with pubic hair in a hotel.

I think I could handle both of the findings better now than I did then, with my new found resolve to not freak out.:D

On a good note, on our Disney Cruise, housekeeping took our bedspreads away one day to launder, and another day the curtains were removed for washing.

I'm a nurse. There's no germ that i could be exposed to in a hotel room that I haven't been exposed to in my job. Been at it 20+ years and haven't died yet!

I take the nromal cleanliness precautions and call it a day.

I totally agree. I'm a nurse and been at it for 19 years. I've been coughed in my face(yes, coughed-by people who then are discovered to have TB,resistant bacteria, etc-these aren't foreigners or people who are unable to cover their mouths, they choose not to). People who insist upon touching your face right after they do you-know-what because they think you are an angel, and there are more disgusting things people do. Unless your immune system is compromised, exposure to most germs is not going to bother you. Stains, odors and the like are a different story. I
nsects do freak me out though. I moved to South Carolina right out of nursing school into an apartment that boasted they sprayed once a month. I found out why. All of the apartments did it. They call them palmetto bugs-the rest of the world calls them cockroaches. I sprayed one once that was on the wall and it came right at me-then I found out that they can fly. We move the express cart in the ICU to vacuum the hall-they crawled in every direction(we were right over the hospital kitchen)

I had almost forgotten about that Dateline segment. The Horror! I shalt not forget to retire the AKL bedspreads and blankies to the closet for the duration of our stay :)

I am one who takes my own blanket and pillow but it is more a security blanket type of thing than anything else. I had one hotel that I was really glad I do this (not Disney) They brought up the sheets and blanket for the pull out sofa and it was all still damp. Nasty.

Thanks for the airline advise. I think I might just buy a can once we get to Florida, just to be safe.
As for people (especailly sick one's) coughing all over other people.....this happens to me all the time and I think that people need to be more polite :) And, teach their kids some manners, too. I know everyone's not like that, so no offense :)
I hold my breath and turn away when people do that...not that the germs aren't landing on me anyway!

I wish I could take my own blankets, but we are flying from the west coast. We take an enormous amount of stuff as it is.

You're welcome, DISDREAMS ;) ! DH and I also go to a nearby shopping center to buy the things that we couldn't take with us, so yours sounds like a good idea. Hope you have a great time whenever you go!

Just wanted to say that I noticed while at the Yacht club that housekeeping did have clean bedspreads that they were bringing to some rooms. We saw this several times. It gave me hope that they change them when the next guest is coming in.... one can hope!!!!!

Everyone stop, your grossing me out, I can't hear you, na-na-na-na, covering my ears!! EEEEWWWW
Now that's all done, I am going to forget everything I have just read on this thread!!!
BTW, my DS is a germ-a-phob , wipes down the grocery carts beforehand, armed with purell, lysol etc. This year, her first child started nursery school, and the girl's been sick every week with something different since the day school started. Always thought that you need to be exposed to this stuff to get the immune system going. My niece is now picking up every stray germ because she hasn't been exposed to enough of them when she was smaller.

At least this information isn't new and doesn't surprise me. But it's still gross! I don't let DS put his face on the bedspreads, and I bring XL T-shirts to put on the pillows. I seem to have trouble with eye infections if I sleep directly on hotel pillows - no problems with the T-shirt covering the pillowcase. I always pull the spread down to the foot of the bed and try to convince DH and DS not to touch it or roll on it or whatever. I don't like to walk barefoot on hotel carpet, either.

I have my cleansing wipes purchased for our trip in January. I think I am glad we are staying in a Value resort - no coffee maker! Of course there was a show a few years back where they tested water out of restaurant coffee makers vs. water they scooped directly out of a river and you can guess which was cleaner...

I will take reasonable precautions, but I think there are some things I would rather not know. That's why I don't travel with a Luma-light. I don't want to know what all is dried up around the room. Gag!
