Bedspreads and blankets

During my two week stay August 2003 @ Coronado Springs Resort, after two days housekeeping didn't change the bed sheets. I took the sheets off (left on floor) and put a small pen mark on the sheets to see if they were the same or not. When I got back and checked they were the same sheets  I was so upset, called housekeeping and had them bring clean bed sheets. After another two days the sheets still weren't changed so I called housekeeping and asked again for clean sheets. I also would remove the bedspread and leave in a corner but housekeeping always put them back on the bed

What can I do to insure that the bed spread is not put on the bed? How often do you get clean bedsheets? What about the other blanket under the bedspread, is that clean?

18 days to WDW :jumping1:

Uh... It's standard practice to only change the sheets between guests, not everyday! If you have an long stay, they may change them once or twice a week, but no more than that.

The Dateline special was about what they found on the blankets and comforters. They tested hotels and motels from a Howard Johnson to the Ritz Carlton from the least expensive to the most expensive hotel/motel. They did tests what was found on these blankets- bedspread. It was very eye opening. Without getting graphic think about things people do on beds and in beds etc. They found this stuff in all of the hotels. The point that they were making was that they wash the sheets but not the blankets and bedspeads. They wash blankets about once a month and the bedspread once every 3 or so months. They even will change blankets and bedspreads from one room to another while they are cleaning. I myself could probably stomach through a night on a hotel bed. But I have two little girls that I can't deal with. I know that everyone laughs at me but I do not let my taking the duffle bag get in anyones way, I carry it I pack it and I make the beds. So my husband humors me while I do this. I sleep alot better knowing that we have clean stuff on the beds. This is just my way of traveling so don't laugh to hard. OK laugh real hard it is rather funny. Have a good day. Brenda

Actually Disney's written policy is to change them every third day. If you read the card on Environmentality and water conservation in your room, that's what it says. Regretfully I do'nt think thye are changed every third day, more like once a week.

thanks BALAMAV for the info.

I dunno...I just don't think of things like that. We honeymooned in WDW...we definetly...um...did...uh...stuff...ermm..in the bed. Was that a no-no? ;)

Been to many hotels, slept in many different beds...never got sick/funky things going on with me...

I mean - there are worse places to catch germs...

I get grossed out with the blanket and bedspread, too. People do LOTS of things on their beds that I wouldn't want touching my body...call me crazy!

But what people don't realize is that the DIRTIEST and GERMIEST thing in a hotel room, something that is NEVER cleaned....the remote control. That thing is touched by everyone under the sun. And when you start thinking about some of the movies people order in hotel rooms, touching the clicker becomes a whole new level of gross.

Of course, that's just me. I'm sure there are people out there who don't care about lying in other people's dried fluids, but not I!

Another item they talked about was in-room coffee Pots, and cups...Have you ever wondered what rag they use to clean them or where?....yeah, the same rags they used to clean the bath area.

The black light with ultraviolet or infrared showed body fluid almost everywhere in the room.

Along with the remote control another area with the worst germs is the telephone mouth piece. They suggest you take the Lysol wipes or sprays.

I don't want to go through life worrying about what I might catch and where..... I take the "normal" precautions with my family, but I also don't want to raise children who turn out to have OCD. (This is not meant to be disrespectful to people who have this illness, I am a special educator who works with emotional/behavior disordered students). When I'm on vacation, I'm going to relax and enjoy and try not to think about it unless I notice something dirty.

I gotta agree. I just try not too think about it too much. I've slept in many, many hotel beds and I've never come down with any funky disease. We're going in May, and I probably won't spend any time worrying about what might be on the bedspreads. I guess I just don't get too worked up over stuff like that.

I'm another one who takes "average" precautions, but just can't let herself get too worked up over it. My sister is a "germaphobe" and makes herself crazy thinking about it. I don't want to live like that.

We saw that Dateline and were equally grossed out.

On another issue-The April edition of Good Housekeeping has an article about the increase in "bedbugs". Says that they are back with a vengeance after being eliminated decades ago. They came from other countries, other guest and then come home in suitcases with you! They can be difficult to get rid of too. One family had to have their mattress replaced and floors striped up! So be sure to check for bedbugs now too! Not that I am trying to freak you out or anything. ;)

I saw that Dateline too. Travel channel also just did some such show because a friend of mine was talking about it (maybe they reaired the Dateline show?). We always remove the bead spreads. Then we call house keeping for an extra sheet and put it over the blanket, some hotels do this already. I wipe down the phone and remote. and the light switches.
I also do not leave my 'stuff' out on the counter (tooth brush, hair brush, etc.), because I have heard of that stuff getting messed with. I just tuck it away in my suitcase after I use it. I do not use hotel glasses, I bring my own. Some people may consider this extream and what not, but it helps me to relax, knowing what I do thanks to Dateline.
By the way, you can wipe it down with anything that has a bit of soap in it, a wash cloth, a baby wipe, whatever. An antibacterial like Lysol will not really give you a cleaner result. Most of what you need to worry about is virual.

For me it is not the germs they are everywhere and there is nothing really you can do about them. Except wipe things down etc. If I was a germ freak I would not be going on the Cruise if you have been on the cruise forum the Norwalk virus is back this year and causing a bit of a problem. What I do worry about is what is on the blankets and bedspreads. Bedbugs which by the way you can see. Look for them in the creases of the bed. But the big thing for me is Lice. I have been a Hairdresser for 20 years. I have only seen it once but know people who have dealt with it. It is very hard to handle. The Lysol will not kill them. I don't mean to disturb anyone by this but. I just thought you might want to know where my craziness comes from. HAHAHA. This has been a great thread to see that there are people a little crazy like me. I can't wait to tell my hubby I am not the only one. Thanks all. Brenda

I just hate it when this thread pops up. LoL It makes me crazy. I don't leave the room when we check in until I spray and wipe everything down with lysol. Especially that nasty little remote control. We usually bring in the blanket throws we have in the car while traveling and use them in place of the blankets. The comforters are folded and put on the other bed that we aren't using. I've had some bad experiences with hotel rooms. {Ewwww} Not Disney of course.

Okay...I am now suffering from "hotel bedding disorder". As soon as we get into the hotel room in April I will pull off the bedspreads, and leave them outside the door like a dirty tray of food!!!!! (just kidding). Or, I suppose I could always spend my first day at Disney washing the bedding at the guest laundry.:) ::MinnieMo

I usually turn down the bedspread. Since most of them are white on the underside, if I see any unsightly stains are the underside, I ask for a new bedspread.

I never let my son walk on the carpets. We always try to wear socks. I just roll the blanket down with the sheet over top.

I do clean the remotes, countertops, and switches.

Kat

PS: Is anyone else's skin crawling about now?????

I posted earlier about stipping the comforters off immediately, but several responses now have me pretty sick to my stomach.

I never thought about the remotes, gross.

BUT, if I left thought about and went about cleaning every single thing, it would make me crazy.

That is why we decided to purchase DVC and updrade our resort. It seems like the better the resort, the better the cleaning. Also in the DVC rooms, there are washing machines, which we use alot.

After watching that special we decided to take our own sheets and pillowcases, but when the time actually came I did not want to give up any room in my suitcase so we did not.

Never even thought about the remote.

I ALWAYS take the comforter off after watching that special. My Son-In-Law just lays right on it with his face and everything and laughs at me when I tell him actually how gross that is.

HOwever I try not to think about it too much as I love Disney too much to let it slow me down. But I might just bring some wipes this year for that darn remote.

I always bring small dixie cups for the bathroom - just a habit.

I miss my own pillow the MOST!

I'll tell you one worse than hotel bedspreads. I'm a nurse and sometimes there is such quick turn around in a hospital that one hour your patient dies there in the bed usually of some long, tortuous process and then after housekeeping "cleans" the room your next unsuspecting patient is admitted to the SAME bed within the hour never knowing that they are laying in a bed where somebody just died. Pretty gross to think about and way worse than germs on bedspreads.

Out of all the hotels and places to travel, Disney bedding is probably the cleanest. Think about it, you've got your 2 kids in the bed next to you, they're exhausted, you're exhausted, they've whined the last 3 hours of the day - Are you really going to take a chance of waking them up? How much do you really think goes on @ WDW:)
