Bed Bugs!!

If you fly, before you bring your luggage into the room, open your luggage and check it carefully to make sure you didn't pick up the bugs via your transportation. You don't want to be the one bringing them in. They have to come from somewhere.

It seems odd to me that if she was there in April, and just told Disney after3 months , that room would have hundreds of bugs running around. I’m sure guests would have had to see them and would have told a manager.

I'm not the OP, but in the original story, Disney didn't say they JUST found bed bugs in their room. They could have found them the day after the family checked out, but only let them know about it when returning their call months later. I would imagine Disney has records of every time bed bugs are found, which rooms are treated, etc., etc.

I've seen POFQ come up on bedbug registries and online reviews moreso than any other Disney resort. I wonder why that is.

My wife and I both extensively traveled for business in our past and so we're neurotic about room cleanliness, bedbugs, and our travelling routine. We don't check bags with airlines, even if it means packing light, and when we get to our hotel room we leave the bags outside and do a thorough inspection of the room. We completely unmake the bed(s) to inspect the mattress and every nook and cranny in all the furniture. Once it looks good enough, we then relax and begin our vacation. Upon return, we leave our bags in the garage, immediately throw everything in the wash, and we do a quick spray with alcohol or lysol or something to our luggage.

It's not 100% foolproof, but it minimizes the chance of having to deal with it at home.

You probably know this, but not checking bags doesn't guarantee anything. They could be in the plane cabin as well.

Of course, I know my method isn't 100% foolproof. I can get them at work if someone had them and sat in the cafeteria or something. But, it's a measure of prevention that will possibly prevent a sighting from turning into an outbreak.

In April, someone I heard in Gasparilla Grill in GF had them in her room. She was naturally very distraught. I was super paranoid to know they were indeed there (and I also saw the bedbug dog with a worker on the grounds, I didn't make the connection at the time!!). But we had checked our room before we got comfy, as we always do.

So just out of curiosity, what happens when Disney knows they have bed bugs in a certain room? Do they just treat it and let people continue staying there??

I’m so nervous I almost want to switch to POR, but I’m arriving in 4 days and don’t really want to deal with switching this close to my trip.

The room is taken out of circulation/inventory. The family affected is moved to other quarters. The luggage and all contents should all be washed/treated before returning to the family.

Just to reassure you, POFQ+PORS is the 24th biggest hotel in the *world*, spanning 3,056 rooms. Chance are, if bed rooms are to be found in some hotel room, it will be in the hotels with the largest number of rooms.

We've been at various WDW resorts recently and we've seen the “bed bugs dogs” around the resorts. WDW *is* taken the problem very seriously. You can get bed bugs anytime you travel, Disney is probably one of the safest destination.

Or any time you shop... (a couple of years ago, the Abercrombie and Fitch store on 5th Ave in New York had to be closed and treated! I still giggle when I remember the headlines of "Abercrombie and Itch")...or go to the movies...or go out to eat...or do anything outside of your dwelling really.

You can cower at home and live in fear or you can take the preventative steps that are listed on this thread (and also easily google-able) and live your life outside of your home!

I think its safe to assume that bed bugs are part of life, not a great part of life but none the less a part of life. Its good to read a thread like this because i assume that most of us take it all for granted and don't take the steps necessary to try ( i am saying try nothing is for sure) to avoid a bed bug problem. What a way to ruin your vacation (is this covered by trip insurance??) so taking any steps to avoid it seems reasonable to me but if you are like me I have a tendency to just walk into the room and move in!! but no more i can assure you!! But in no way is this going to paralyze me and take away from the fun of my vacation. The reality is that very few people are effected (or is it affected) but if its you then it feels like everyone is.

Oh my goodness, reading this thread is bringing back nightmares from my experience at All Star Music two years ago.

My first night there i woke up, took a shower, and when i came out of the shower i spotted a bug on my bed. I didnt think it was a bed bug to be honest, but i snapped a pic of it anyway and tried to trap the bug with the only thing i could find. A plastic cup. Well, the bugger escaped by the time i returned from the front desk. Lol.

Anyway, I truly didnt like all star music resort AT ALL. Looking at it for the first time left me underwhelmed. Not a fan at of the layout or decor at all. And im a huge value resort fan! So when I saw the bug, I thought it was a random bug (not a bed bug), but it grossed me out and I figured that was my opportunity to switch to another value resort.

I marched over to talk to the manager of the resort and show her a pic of the bug. She said she'd look into it and call me back on my cell phone (as I had planned on doing rope drop at MK that morning). Well would you believe that as I was stepping off the bus at MK, she called me? That was quick! She confirmed that the sniffer dogs in fact found bed bugs. OH MY GAWD!!!! I was shocked and very upset. But they handled the situation beautifully. They took ALL of my stuff and sent it to a treatment facility. I told them i needed my halloween costume for the party that night...so they inspected it and left it in a bag in my new room (they asked me where i wanted to be moved to and i asked for Sports, close to my friend). We had rooms side by side, worked out great. My other stuff was returned to me by that night. Worked out very well and i was really impressed at how disney handled it all.

I did receive compensation for this, but i am so grateful that i caught the bug in time, otherwise i would've taken it home too. Had i not spotted the bug on the white sheet as soon as i stepped out of the shower, who knows what wouldve happened. And yes, i had bite marks on my legs and yes i did inspect the mattress and furniture like I always do. But if you only have a couple/a few bugs in your room, its much harder to spot than a full blown infestation. In my case, I only had a couple of bugs in my room at movies.

It was a very interesting experience for sure. Bed bugs can happen anywhere. Its unfortunate but that's life in hotels I guess. The manager of the hotel told me that in the future i can request to have my room sniffed out for bed bugs prior to check-in. Thats what i've done ever since. No harm in being proactive.

Maybe it's possible they already knew but they needed to cross-reference the room she stayed in with rooms that have been found to have bed bugs.

@Amylc Yes this is exactly what i'm thinking happened. They needed to cross reference the room she stayed in. No doubt they keep a very detailed record of where the bed bugs were, the date and time the room was treated etc.

Why would WDW tell ANYONE they have bed bugs in their rooms? As previously posted: what about the planes, public transportation, blah blah blah...

Just doesn't make any business sense to me.....and here it is on the web for EVERYONE to see...

Yep. My strong suspicion is that the OP's "friend" was not supposed to reveal what had been done. That is usually how Disney operates when a situation is settled. Because they know they have a huge target on their back WITHOUT this kind of info being out there.

By revealing it, the OP (and by extension their "friend" for telling them) has opened Disney up for having to do that much more for the next person who wants to claim it happened to them.

This thread makes me want to request to have our room sniffed before we check-in! I always check before we settle into a room, but I always worry about missing something. Bed bugs creep me out!!
