Bed bugs!!

I would caution you about how you handle clothes and luggage when you get home. Leave everything outside. Bag it in garbage bags. If you come from a hot climate, set the car out in the sun for a few hours. Anything you may bring home will be killed. If not, put everything through a hot dryer for 25 minutes before washing it. Get a bed bug cover for your mistress and box spring.

We brought a bed bug home from a hotel in London, Ontario and it was not a pleasant experience. We basically had to quarantine the bedroom, bag all our clothes, treat every spec of clothing with heat and spray. Not fun.

Let's hope you leave the little huggers in Florida. Sorry about the bites. They itch like crazy.

You don't she'd object? :duck:

OP sorry that some are so quick to attack. It makes me kinda sad that if you have a problem people assume the worst first. I prefer to assume most people are honest until proven otherwise. Anyways, on with the bed bug issue. I haven't had them at Disney or another hotel. I do believe we picked up lice at a hotel at Disney but that is hard to prove. I called back to the resort to let the manager know but given that I have a child myself (and he is who had the issue) I suppose it was possible we brought them with us. I'm glad they took care of everything material for you. I still think I would leave my suitcases outside when I returned but I'm pretty paranoid. As far as compensation, I think more than a one night comp. should be included. Maybe a few fastpasses to make up for the time lost in the park would be a nice gesture.
That's a good thing to ask for. We got 3 each just for going through the DVC tour earlier this month. They are given to compensate for the park time you loose by taking the tour. Though in their case, they offered them vs. asking for them. I am not sure how to go about asking for them. Can hotel managers give them?

Yes. We received 3 a piece for a broken tub at the grand Floridian in December, and they comped us one room night. I didn't even ask. The night manager on duty was amazing.

While I myself have never experienced bed bugs at Disney or anywhere else, I know it is always a possibility. I made sure to check before we start unpacking. Last year my co-worker stayed at All Star Music and woke up the first morning with itchy bites on her back, side and stomach as did her sister. They were only staying 2 nights and not experienced travelers so she didn't know to report them. She does now!!! OP sorry about your bed bug experience!

We had a bed bug experience this past Christmas. None of us were bitten thankfully, but when housekeeping came to clean our room after our first night, they discovered bed bugs. All our clothes, except what we were wearing, were taken to be cleaned. It was unfortunately Christmas Day so nothing except Disney shops were open to get clothes, so we were given a credit per person of I think $250.00 to buy clothes on property plus a night's credit. The cast members who assisted us were wonderful. They had to take my niece's Duffy for cleaning as well and when we got to our new room later that day, they had left a stuffed Duffy for her. They offered to take us off property to shop but everything was closed and we had a car so there was no need for that. We hadn't planned on going to the parks that day so we did not miss out on park time but it did take a couple of hours for the cast members to go through everything before they took it for cleaning.

I leave everything outside the room first. Saves alot f aggrevation later if little critters are found.
I use a sticky rolley brush...I pull back the covers and roll it around the corners of the bed/ mattress, floor, rug, etc. Takes a little time but well worth it as any little bugs stick or their dryed droppings. Then look for any little black specs in blankets or corners.. If any concern contact the front desk right away.

I typically bring a lint brush, so i'll have to use your technique on my next overnight trip anywhere really.

It has my cookie fed advertisement now showing bed bug removal services. I've had those suckers once and I hope I never ever get them again. A friend had them and told us after they had come over to hang out and I called an exterminator in just because I'm that paranoid after having them in my first apartment years ago.

Thanks for all your advice everyone! And sorry about the exclamation points. My DGD says I use them all the time when I'm replying on Facebook also. It's a habit I guess. I really didn't think it was such a big deal. I'll definitely be more careful the next time.

No need to apologize - punctuation shouldn't be so frightening to people. And anyway bed bugs are alarming to me - I'm glad you posted-it reminds me to check more thoroughly! :)

I will be at POFQ in 5 weeks and this thread is making me worry...and I can't stop itching! Thank you for posting your experience so I know to check along with all of the other tips!

OP again. Everyone please check the beds. These bites are so itchy. I didn't ask for anything. The manager offered the money for some new clothes and compted us one night and gave us a few FPs. He was very concerned. The Frozen Fireworks tonight were awesome! Having a great time despite being so itchy.

Disnut1149, I am sorry this happened to you. As others have said, my skin crawls just thinking about it.

I would definitely be SUPER CAREFUL checking your luggage/clothing before you bring anything at all back into your house. It's bad enough you had to deal with this on vacation, the last thing you'd need is to bring them into your home.

French Quarter is where we got bed bugs. We go to WDW each year, but I will never stay there again.

Just know they can happen at any resort. Not even the best resorts are immune and interestingly they have nothing to do with cleanliness of the establishment or those who visited it before. They usually are brought in from people who carry them when the bugs get into their luggage from inside the airplanes etc. In NYC earlier in the year there was a big issue of people getting them due to the subway. It was so bad they had to take trains out of service for treatment. The only chemical that kills them is now illegal so the best way to treat it is to heat them out or freeze them out.

We got them at the Polynesian in 2013. Even though I know they can happen anywhere, it'll be awhile before I can return to the Poly.

The room at POFQ we were assigned to last year was treated for bed bugs.
Luckily they found us another room, later in the day, but it took a long time to get a room assignment.
It didn't sour me from the resort, but I sure understand never wanting to go to a particular resort if you actually did get bedbugs there.

It's a mental thing, I just couldn't stay there again even though it happened in 2009. If you look on the bed bug registry, POFQ is quite well represented. I realize it can happen anywhere, which is why I search every hotel room we stay in now. Sadly, in doing this I have realized that compared to elsewhere, Disney resorts are the dirtiest rooms we stay in. It shouldn't be that way, but it's just my observation. Still love Disney, but I have seen their cleanliness in all areas (parks too) go downhill over the years. It saddens me.
