DH and I are looking at a trip to Hawaii in the next year or so and love to stay in bed and breakfasts. Not finding alot of information on ones in Hawaii as most books seem geared to hotels. A travel agent told me they don't deal with them much as the b & b's mostly go by word of mouth.
So anyone stayed at any? Not sure which islands we will visit but I have seen websites for a couple that look interesting with fairly good rates. Also heard about cabins from state park areas. Anyone know about these?Looking for a relaxing experience with natural beauty as opposed to touristy hot spots.

I know about Disney options, but I'm kind of in the dark about the lovely sunshiny state of Hawaii.

What island are you considering?

The best B&B in the state is the Kilauea Lodge on the island of Hawaii. It's located in Volcano Village, right next to Volcano National Park. It's VERY secluded and quiet - it's in a tropical rain forest - not your typical Hawaii - far away from all beaches - and chilly temperatures because of the elevation. The owners also operate one of the best restaurants on the island - the chef is french trained and he uses the freshest local ingredients - if you go, make dinner reservations when you book your room. They do have a website - but call to book - ask for the AAA rate if you are a AAA member.

There are other B&B's on the other islands - on Oahu, there's a nice one in Manoa Valley - again, not close to a beach. There's also an o.k. one on the slopes of Diamondhead - 15 minute walking distance from Waikiki. Can't remember their names, but they both may be listed in Frommer's.

I was just looking at the same thing for the big island, so we could stay 3-4 nights and move around a bit. This website had a bunch listed. http://www.stayhawaii.com/

Post if you find anything good. I was also looking at this, but it isnt a B&B, but we would have the kitchenette to eat in and save a little $ on the big island. http://www.killino.com/index.html

I don't know if you're looking for an elegant B&B experience or for inexpensive lodging. Try looking under vacation rentals instead of hotels.

Lots of folks in Hawaii have one or two rentals attached to their homes that have kitchenettes. Because of the way the laws work, these don't provide breakfast - although some have sort of "gift baskets" of breakfast items provided. These are generally less expensive and more local feeling than a traditional B&B. My brother has one in the Kona area.

You can also rent out people's condos. Those are good because they often have more ammenities.

beerbudlady will post what I find to help us all out. I've found a couple and will try to put their sites up tomorrow.
I have done the most research on Maui, Kauai and Oahu and bought the revealed books on these islands. We would not stay on Oahu long I don't think it sounds very crowded and touristy around Honolulu without much elsewhere. I was all set on Kauai until I saw some of the Maui pictures in the revealed book..... I haven't really considered the big island, was more thinking of a couple of days on Oahu to see Pearl Harbor for the hubby and then maybe a week on either Maui or Kauai. I want a middle of the road B &B not real fancy or elegant and it doesn't have to be on the ocean. I kind of like the idea of having a place to cook as we do get tired of eating out all the time. I have looked a bit at the vacation homes too. Although we love the look of some of the fancier hotels we just don't know as we would like them as we arent the elegant hotel type and I'd rather stay cheaper, more personal, and stay longer. At disney we are more moderate type people although we love AKL. We are campers too.

disykat-the way you describe the rental attached to the home sounds more what we are looking for, especially if they have a cooking area(doesn't have to be much). Any ideas of where to get more information on these?
beachbunny-I am having trouble finding many on Oahu. I'll check out what you have given me
amarberry-I'm checking out junglecabana tomorrow!!

Thanks for all the help so far.

How's the weather going to be this October????

I've stayed in B&B's on Oahu (Kailua), Big Island (Kailua-Kona & Outside Volcanoes and even SouthPoint), Maui (Lahina & Kihei), and Kauai'i (Kapaa). One website to check out is Hawaii's best B&Bs. Just google and you'll find the site. Fair prices, decent to FABULOUS locations, and some great "innkeepers." Feel free to PM me if you want additional info.
