Becoming Lean, Mean, Endurace Event Machines in 2008

HI guys!!!

Lynnda...Thanks for the info on that! The swimming actually now sounds like it might be possible... The biking...I would definately have to practive that! Maybe in the next year or two...hmmm

Vic...So sorry to hear you are sick!!

The chiro visit did go well. Thanks for asking. They did the electro-therapy on my back, laser on one foot, ultrasound on the other and ultrasound on the hip flexor. The Dr did her "manipulations" and I felt better. I have to continue to stretch and ice that hip flexor. My right leg is shorter than than the left due to a skiing accident (broken leg...). This happens to also be the side of the ailing back and hip flexor. I know the 1/2 inch difference plays into it, but I also think driving so much does. My husband and I work in the same building--nice, we can carpool, but it's a 45-60 min drive EACH way. Normally he drives, but has had a seizure in Oct and Nov and is now on a no-driving restriction. So...that means I'm driving everywhere which I think is impacting my hip flexor. When we were at WDW for marathon weekend, I didn't drive for 4 days and my hip never bothered me... Just a therory...

So..anyway...Last night I did the elliptical and bike for total of 50 mins. Today I will try to do a 30 min Step Class and aquacise.

Keep pushing you guys... You're doing awesome!!!

Stacie

Oh - I WANT to do the marathon...babysitting is our issue - only one of us can do it...both of us want to do our first marathon next year - but he is definately more ready than me so it is the logical choice that he does it

If we can't work it out for next year - then I will do it in 2010 - and he will do the half...

maybe if we told his parents we were going to leave our kids with some random stranger we met on the internet during the marathon - they would agree to come :rotfl:

OH yea - where in Ohio are you from?

Oops, I must have missed that in reading your post. Childcare issues. Yeah, tell them that a WISHer volunteers--nothing scarier than us!

I think it's Lara who's from Ohio. But speaking of Ohio, what's the Flying Pig like? We're now living in Pgh, which means Ohio races are a really convenient distance to travel to for races.

Stacie: I'm glad to hear you're feeling better. My DMIL has a shorter leg, and know a little about the problems it causes. And I definitely think driving can affect things; it's a lot of sitting w/ not very good posture (necessarily). WTG on the elliptical/bike! I hope you made it to your class, too.

As for me: Strength training today, another glorious round of lunges, crunches, and squats. I've really been working on my form and breathing, but--and I can't believe I'm about to say this--I might be ready to increase the weight by just a little. Gulp. I've also been making a real effort to "eat clean" as you folks have been recommending. Today, for instance, I had nonfat cottage cheese and an orange as a snack instead of those No-Pudge brownies I made. it's not the same, but at least I could feel almost smug about my (almost non-existent) willpower. We'll see how I do this evening.

22 mile bike ride today. I cut it short because I REALLY hate pedaling in strong winds. Almost got tossed by a hard crosswind burst once. My immediate goal --->>> No Road Rash.

Hitting the gym for weights tomorrow.

I have never done the Flying Pig - but I am this year!!! I hear from everyone here that it is WONDERFUL - Cincinnati is pretty hilly so there is that to deal with - but I went and drove it and it is a pretty gradual climb - the return on the half is awesom b/c you go straight down a huge hill - I figure it will help a ton when I am tired!!

I have a question for all of you...the first mile of any distance I do is pure hell on my shins...horrible pain and every race I think this is it - I can't go another step but almost like clockwork at the first mile marker it goes away never to return - I have tried stretching, different shoes, but it really seems like I might have to just deal with working it out in the first mile - they aren't shin splints b/c they never bother me beyond that first mile or outside of training and races...anyone have any ideas or experience with this?

Hey all!
So fun to catch up with all of you! Had a crazy day at work and am just now logging on. Got home and did the WATP 4 mile and now waiting for my DH to finish supper!:thumbsup2
You were right, I am originally from NW Ohio (not too far from Toledo) and then live in Indiana for a while and am now near Pittsburgh. Debra, you are right about Pgh having a Race for the Cure and it's huge. I think they are very close to 40,000 now. We have done it 3 or 4 times, but parking is always such a pain in the city that we do it less and less, but it is a lot of fun. The Great Race is also an awesome 10K and very big as well. That's in the spring. And I hear, too, that the Marathon is supposed to be a go. Also, if you want a great running store, try Fleet Feet in the South Hills area.
Sounds like everybody is on track. Vic, so sorry you are sick. If I make it through this week, I'll believe amazed. 75% of my office patients today had either sinus infections, bronchitis or pneumonia!
Stay healthy and on the move!

Good morning Lean Meaners!

Sitting here at the house trying to get over whatever it is I have. The doc says I have a touch of pneumonia. Not sure how that came to be as I ran Sunday and didn’t have any breathing issues. But, I’ll be a good boy, take my medicine, and get well.

Thanks for the well wishes, everyone.

Maria – Hoping the workouts are coming along.

Stacie – Just take your time and you CAN do the Minnie. Glad to hear the Chiro visit went well.

Debra – WTG with the 1 lb loss. Baby steps. WTG with the weight workout.

Beth – I’m having the same problem. Not running as much, but still eating like I am.

Jim – WTG with the 22 miler, and I hear ya about road rash.

Kate – No advice about the shin deal. I would think stretching them as much a possible may be the only thing you can do.

Lara - WTG with the 4 miler!

Y'all take care.

:)

Feel better, Vic!

Congrats to all those who have able to get back to healthy eating and are losing weight. Add me to the group who is still eating like she has to run a marathon. Every day I promise to be good.....and everyday something comes up to tempt me. Yesterday they had BOGO specials on Ben & Jerry's.....need I say more? (And I don't even LIKE ice cream!)

WHAT?????? Jeanne, you don't like ice cream? It's one of my biggest downfalls! I have just stayed away from it for the last month. And, the funniest thing is that a serving is 1/2 cup! I never stop at 1/2 a cup! Oh well......sorry I missed the Ben and Jerry's special:mad:

My family's lastest love is sugar-free jello mixed with sugar-free Cool Whip! Man, you would think I made a gormet dessert or something. They all love it! We actually ate that during the Biggest Loser last night.

:lmao: Jim, you just crack me up! I hope you met your immediate goal. But 22 miles, and short? Wow! That gives me something to aspire to once the weather allows me to bring my bike out.

Kate: Hills, huh? They scare me and I haven't really done any training for them...yet. As for your not-shin splints shin problem....:confused3 I wish I could help.

Lara: Thanks for all the good info on races and Fleet Feet. DH just mentioned that we should both get new shoes and I was able to impress him with my local knowledge. Then I told him I got it from a DISer. But so far I've been unable to tempt him to the boards. :sad2: Congrats on the 4 miles!

Vic: Take care of that pneumonia. Wouldn't want you to be feeling down and out for the start of the Miles/Minutes Challenge. (Okay, maybe I would...but a fair "fight" is more fun, don't you think? :cool2: )

Jeanne: You don't like ice cream? Why, that's...practically unAmerican! How do you feel about baseball or apple pie?

Beth: One word: Walgreen's. They have a 2 for 1 special on Ben & Jerry's about every 3 weeks. Don't ask me why I know, especially since I'm not eating any these days...

As for me: Another day for C25K followed by an extended treadmill time. (Very cold & gusty here, bleh.) I decided that I didn't want to lose the base I had for the Goofy so that I would start with C25K plan and then tack on an additional hour of walking. My goal is to run the 5K & then start adding more running, in 10% increments, into that longer period of walking.

So far, so good on the food. It helps--or not--that my throat is a bit sore and so I'm not interested in much other than water & tea. I'm eating properly, but without the regular enthusiasm (or temptation). I am NOT getting sick, though, nope, not happening.

Hey Lean Meaners!! Except for the slippery slope caused by Walgreen's and B&J, you are doing wonderfully!!

I am down another pound and I have begun training this week for the OKC Memorial half. I have to start training early so that I workout at all!!! I am the captain of Hakuna Matata, I felt it was necessary to establish that I DO workout!! :rotfl:

I have officially decided to do the WDW marathon if I can survive the training! I even conned....uhm, talked....uhm, encouraged my sister-in-law in doing the 5K with me so that I would have company! Not that you aren't all great, but I spend way too much time alone already! I need lots and lots of :grouphug: peeps!

Ice cream usually doesn't tempt me. I will always take the salty over the sweet. I never met a potato chip I didn't love and things like fried chicken and buffalo wings will get me every time. Gotta admit that Pistachio,Pistachio is awfully good though......come to think of it, it is a little salty.

Beth: right now I'm starving and the SF jello with SF cool whip sounds awfully good, too!
will get me every time

CONGRATS on the full!!

Today my kids told me they would rather spend the weekend with my sister and her kids than go to during marathon weekend next year!! I was so excited!!!!!! I am not sure if it will work out or not but hopefully my DH and I will both be able to do the full!!

Happy Wednesday everyone!!

Good to see everyone is still here & upright!

Today I ran & went looking for someplace to do some hill work. Ok, the term "hill" being relative here in flat Florida, but I got a bit in.

I was able to do 9 mile in 9:09/mile pace. I was reasonably proud of myself, especially since my last mile was the quickest.

I definitely will NOT be going anywhere near that fast in my marathon in 2 weeks, but still, hey, no chest pain or shortness of breath!

I also hit the gym for the 1st time in about 8 weeks. Some nagging tendinitis issues are still there, but ya' can't be a couch 'tater forever.

Hope everyone does well & stays safe today.

Hi Everyone!

Well, I was down, but not out. Karma bit me, big time. The personal day I took Monday turned into real illness Tuesday. My stomach is still sore, but I'm much better and planning to do my workout, probably a little slower, tomorrow. Good thing today was a rest day:thumbsup2

Anyway, ingesting basically nothing yesterday and not much today should help:rotfl:

Jim -- You sound so positive! Just the happy voice I needed to hear tonight:cloud9:

Julia & Nick's Mom -- Best of luck with the childcare. We left ds home last year with my dad. Everybody thought it was a great deal. He was one spoiled kid when we got home. DS is 10, so he really couldn't miss that much of 4th grade.

Jeanne -- One nice effect of my illness, nothing fried sounds good. I'm hoping it stays that way!

Connie -- I believe Hakuna Matata is going to be doing light housekeeping while Team Ohana is striding along...at least that's the rumor I've heard:cool1:

Debra -- Mind over matter, you can stay well!:rolleyes1

Vic -- Feel better:grouphug:

Beth -- 1/2 a cup is a serving for a 5 year old...unfortunately, it's better if I limit my exposure:guilty:

Lara -- The illness is everywhere!

Ok, guys. It's almost February -- new month, new us!
Maria

The only way Team Ohana will be racing away from Hakuna Matata, is in your starship! You will need the extra power of those lithium crystals to get by US!! :rotfl:

We will do whatever it takes, if we have to grow lithium in our legs, we'll do it!

Great!! You guys are already starting behind!!! :rotfl: Let the games begin...tomorrow!!!

:wave2: Love, Connie

Feel better, Maria

Well I got up early this morning to go to the Y and as I was putting on my pants, something in my back went *twinge*.......been there, done that, and I don't like it. Nothing went out, but I still have that "iffy" feeling, if you get my drift. I decided it was probably wise NOT to do spinning class today. So now I am catching up on all the threads and keeping my fingers crossed that my back is OK.

Oh gosh, Jeanne, I am sending you all the PD I can find...that's awful and here's a handful of Hakuna Matata to go with it!! -- I hope it's better soon and not going out on ya!

:grouphug: Love, Connie

Connie: Congrats on the pound! :thumbsup2 And good luck with the training of OKC. Hakuna Matata is lucky to have you for a captain! Look at how you inspired! your SIL to join you next year. :cool1:

But for the record, Ohana will just use our jump drive & end up light years ahead of Hakuna Matata, so you might as well kick back in your hammocks for a spell...

Kate: I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you and your DH with the full! But I am curious--why would they choose your sister & cousins over Disney? (Wow, their cousins must be much cooler than mine were.)

Jim: WTG on your 9-miler! You leave me in the dust...but with aspirations. And take care of that tendonitis--you've got an upcoming marathon that I look forward to hearing about.

Jeanne: Oh, captain, my captain! Take care of yourself--I've had that iffy, twinge-y feeling, and it's no fun. We want you happy and healthy.

As for me: I'm on a couple of cold & flu tablets, so I can't feel my sore throat or joints. So I did my XT today and will be headed out here shortly--gee, I think I said that a 1/2 hour ago--for a short, mid-afternoon, clear-my-brain stroll. Nothing too strenous, as I'm still feeling a bit under the weather. But Maria, I think your good thoughts actually helped!
