Becoming Lean, Mean, Endurace Event Machines in 2008

I'm no Jeff or Howard, but here's my times for today.

15 miles, 2:24:17, 10:49/mpm pace.

80 plus degrees, 80 plus % humidity.

I lost over 8 lbs in spite of drinking 2 quarts of H2O.

Between miles 4-7 I met up with a guy I know from the neighborhood...you know typical long time endurance event guy, has done 10 or so marathons, 10 or so full IronMan events..etc...he slowed way down for me, but I was still training WAY faster than I planned...probably good to shock the body anyway.

So we separate at between mile 7 and 8, and I stop and get some pretzels and water at Walgreens...keep going...and hes waiting for me at about mile 10.5...so I run with him again at a (for me) fast pace until about mile 12.5 when I finally get to peel off and head (SLOWLY) for home. Ahhhh...ice baths and protein shakes...the only thing better than that is an umbrella drink on a beach...as Jeff well knows:rotfl:

Time for a nappy nap!

Mike

Mike~ Awesome effort! You deserve a Nappy nap for sure!

Here is my information for today....This running stuff is getting old quick! :headache: :lmao:

Tomorrow I have 10 planned. I know it will be at a slower pace than today's run. I wanted to mention that my weight has finally dropped a bit more (I was at a plateau for about 3 weeks) and I am just below 190 (189.9) as of this morning. I am sure it will bounce back and forth a bit, but this is a good trend. My goal is 185 by the Marine Corps Marathon in October. It's lookin' pretty good so far. I have lost over 15 pounds since the end of May.

Enjoy the rest of your weekend!

Beth

Beth, caught most of it on the radio yesterday while driving around town doing errands.

Caught the last inning when we got home. Talk about exciting comeback.

Hope you're rooting for our team today to beat Mexico!

I'm headed to the waterpark, so I gotta listen to the radio again today.

:thumbsup2

Thanks for all the great welcomes! I am just hoping that I can keep up with this thread and also the weekly thread!

I have had 2 days of pretty intense training. I did a 10-miler on Saturday with my brother. He is running the Phila Distance Run with me next month. (Skip ahead if you don't want to read a long and rather self-congratulatory story!)

A little bit of background on my brother. He is two years younger than me, and started being pretty athletic in high school. He wrestled & ran cross-country. Then he went to West Point for 4 years followed by 4 years in the Army as an officer and was in awesome shape. He did ranger training, served in the first Gulf War, and has jumped out of lots of airplanes. He has run a bunch of marathons during his life, and many other shorter races.

Meanwhile I was busy having 4 kids and being a soccer mom/couch potato (until January, that is)!

Mike hasn't been particularly active lately, but runs regularly and is in good enough shape that he hasn't been training very hard for next month's half marathon. He asked me what I was doing this weekend, and we decided he would join me for my long run yesterday. However, he said his pace was between 9-10 min/mile. I've been doing about 11:30 on my LRs, so I said we should just run separately and meet up again at the end. I even gave him the key to my car (we drove over together) so he could go do something while he was waiting for me.

We were going about 2.5 miles in one direction, turning around & going past where we started and then going out & back 2.5 miles again. On the first out and back I passed him only about 1/4 from the end, which surprised me a bit - I was doing about 11 minute miles, and he said that he was running at about 10 minute miles.

Well, in the other direction I met up with about where I was turning around at 7.5 miles. He doesn't have a Garmin, so he had gone a bit too far, but from that point on we were running at the same pace! Not only that, I felt great, and he was completely spent - I passed him on each hill! Without that extra .5-.6 miles he would have beat me, but only by a few minutes. My overall pace was 11 min miles, and I ran negative splits for the whole race (my fasted mile was Mile 9 at 10:48). I felt really felt terrific at the end - he was complaining about his calves!

I can't even begin to express what this meant to me. He has always been the "athletic one" and now I'm in as good shape as he is! :cool1: :cool1: He was great about it (of course), and we are going to run together frequently this fall.

Anyway, I followed it up this morning by a PR in the Livestrong Challenge 5K - I guessing 32:50, but I messed up my Garmin a little (I seem to do that every race). I ran the whole way (Yay!), had a 10:33 pace, and did negative splits! So I am really happy with the whole thing!

I am feeling very ready for next month's Half!

Now I just need to start eating better - however, I am off to WDW for free dining on Tuesday. Hmmmm . . . :confused3 I think for now I will just concentrate on not gaining anything while I'm there (I'm still dealing with the pounds I put on in Maine last month).

I'll be back in a week. Have a great one, and thanks for listening!

So, Jeff, Congrats to Hawaii!!!!! They won the whole shabang! They are the Little League World champions! Not too shabby.....it was a shut out, beating Mexico 12 to 3! It was a good game.

Beth

CONGRATULATIONS TO HAWAII!!! LITTEL LEAGUE WORLD SERIES WINNERS!!!

Here are the results of my LR today. I ran this one at a slower pace so I could go the distance. I wasn't really worried about pace today (for a change). I originally had 12 on my plan so instead of 10 I ended up running 12. In hind sight, maybe I should have done 10. :headache:

Miles: 12.0
Time: 2:03:50
Pace: 10:19

Splits:

10:32
10:19
11:59
13:01
9:11
11:04
10:31

I ran a different route today which crossed a lot of roads and intersections. At the 4 to 5 mile area, I ran through a wooded area I have spoken of before (The Northern Delaware Greenway) that is rather hilly and unforgiving. I ended up walking up many of the steepest slopes, thus the slower paced miles. I got out around 9:45 am in 73 degree heat and 81% humidity. It was in the high 80's soon after my run began. It was a scorcher on the pavement with little or no shade to help me. This was my second longest run since school ended at the end of May. My longest was 12.6.

This week alone I ran:

Monday: 5.04
Tuesday: 6.03
Wednesday: 5.04
Thursday: Rest
Friday: 7.03
Saturday: 6
Sunday: 12
Weekly total: 41.14 miles.

I am donating blood tomorrow so I will be taking a day or two off. I think I deserve it.

Have a great week!

My company has at last decamped to Canada -- but they will be back on Wednesday. I can't work out, I can't go anywhere but work, I can't do anything but laundry...sigh.

So, nothing to report on the workout weight loss front. I am so happy for the Onederland folk! Huge, huge Congratulations!

More congrats to the PRs, those trying new things, and those just getting it in every day...or whenever you can!

After Labor Day, I will be back in good form, I hope. My super scary work deadlines are Sept. 4th and 10th, and then I get to rejoin my double dippin' workouts, so here I come!

Sorry I can't do individual replies tonight -- you would not believe how much I have to do to catch up since I have my house back for a few days...I am thinking of each of you, greedily reading when I can, and sending Debra pixie dust for her film course!

Maria

Hi Everyone,

Wendy and Amy: Congratulations on your one-derful accomplishment. Onward and downward!!!

Howard: Congrats on your 5K PR. It's remarkable how much your times improve when you finally have time to train.

Connie: Best WISHes for your shoulder. It seems like surgery is inevitable. I hope the recovery is quick and easy.

Julie: Welcome to this group. It really is a very supportive bunch of people.

Jeff: Congrats to you for the Little Leaguers. Thanks for the beautiful sunset pictures. We Honeymooned in HI, so your pictures always bring back such fond memories.

Beth: Sorry you fell off the wagon. It's amazing the power of that little leprechaun. I can't believe your kids would hide them from you.

Mike: Nice job on the long run. It's nice to have someone else to run with though it sure can wear you out. I'm so envious you got to take a nap afterwards.

Dave: What do you plan to do with Total Fitness? Glad you were able to find some shopping bargains.

Tracey: Hope you had a great weekend. I hope you get settled back into your routine. Before I had kids I would sleep 8 or 9 hours a night. Now I'm thrilled to get 7 though that's not very often. I always say I'll sleep when I'm old. But recently I read that when you go through menopause you get insomnia. Great, I can't even plan on that.

Lisa: Hope the haying went well. Sorry about the allergies. It's a tough choice, either sneezing and wheezing from allergies or the sleepy grogginess from the allergy meds. Good luck increasing your mileage. I think the rules of splurging are great if you have a reasonable relationship with food. When I'm in a good eating groove I could have a small splurge and appreciate it, but if things are going poorly for me I could eat an entire bag of Milanos and not taste a single one then move on to something else.

Kira: Welcome to this thread. Congratulations on your wonderful run with your brother. Have a great time on your trip.

Maria: Hope you are having a good visit with your company.

Debra: Hope the work contract comes thru.

Amy: Glad to hear you've survived Fay. How exciting that DD is taking her first steps. This changes everything!!

Stacie: Glad to hear you are making good use of your bike. Good for you for getting out for a workout at 9:30 at night. I just could never do that.

I'm doing so-so with my August goals. I'm doing better with eating more fruits and veggies. I tracked all my food in Sparkpeople and saw that I am consuming around 60 to 70 g of protein. I need to increase that. I'm going to try to add some more hummus and edamame. I need low-fat sources since I'm near the top of my calorie range. Any other suggestions?

Training is going well. My long run was 16 miles this week. I averaged 10:23 and felt pretty good for most of it.

I started a running blog. It's not the most exciting reading, but feel free to check it out at:http://bqorbust.blogspot.com

I receive Nutrition Action newsletter. It's put out by the Center for Science in the Public Interest. It's a pretty good read sometimes. One of the things I learned this month is that not all fiber is beneficial. A lot of foods claim to have added fiber, but they add inulin or maltodextrin which can be counted as fiber in the nutritional information, but they have not been proven to lower cholesterol or blood sugar or to help with regularity. Plus there is some evidence that inulin can cause intestinal problems. So the Fiber One bars that I eat thinking they are good for me aren't any better than any other bar. I feel so duped!

Have a great week everyone.

Good morning Meaners! Good thing the boys were chatty over the weekend. So, where'd everyone go?????? I took my kidlets to Funtown USA and yes, we had fun!! :thumbsup2

Howard and Jeff: All I can say is :worship: :worship: . You is speedy boys and consistent too. Heck, I kept a 10:38 average over 9 miles and thought I was doing well....:confused3

Cindy: Not tasting the bag of Milanos falls under the accept and acknowledge your splurge. Maybe if you tell yourself, I am going to eat (insert your food here) and put it to the front instead of keeping it mindless munching, it might help to change those bad habits. I knew when I took the kids to the amusement park that I had 9 miles on tap the following day. I drank lots of water to stay hydrated but I also told myself that I could eat what I wanted within reason because I would be burning lots of calories the next day (plan your splurge around a workout). I ended up only eating a few french fries... Of course, last night the 2 mango margaritas probably took care of the rest of my calories! :rolleyes1

Kira: Yes, Maine, fat, hello, lobster dripping in real butter. We have a lot of easy ways to pack on the pounds here in the beautiful State!!! Don't hold it against us...please...:flower3:

Maria: Hang in there girl. We will all get through these busy times together. Mine is starting to wind down and yours is, well, winding up. Just keep posting and we will keep supporting!! :cheer2:

Everyone else: Okay, who said everyone could get off the wagon all at once?? Was it Bill?? Where is he anyway? :confused3

From the Great North Woods, yes I got my LR in yesterday...9 miles with a 10:38 average pace. I am very happy first that I got my LR in and second that I could hold a 10:38 pace for that distance with 2 killer hills. Hollis apparently has one super killer hill at the end so it was good practice and I will have to do this run again later in my training. My DH picked me up with his log truck on his way back from getting a load. We had it timed pretty much perfect. I told him 1:45 and was done in 1:38 and he told me 2 hours and was done in 1:40. Hmm, maybe we HAVE been hanging out together too long!! I am shooting for 29 miles this week (:scared1: Howard on over 40 miles in a week) and will try and maintain that until half training starts on 9/8 for Hollis. Five today, five tomorrow and then 5 on Thursday and Friday. Now to squeeze them into my schedule....:scared:

Have a great day Meaners and everyone climb back on the wagon!!! :upsidedow

Good mornin' Lean Meaners! (now where is the "yawning smilie")
Beth...sounds like you had a fun field trip to watch the Little League World Series.
Panda...:cheer2: Yay! for new clothes.
AmyK.....Woo Hoo:cheer2: for 3 more pounds! DD walking...now the fun begins;) . At least chasing after a running toddler helps you get more exercise in your day (at least that's my motivating point for chasing my little guy around). Daily, he runs up the big hill to see the neighbors fish in their pond---I'm getting faster all the time and I'm not out of breath--I see that as real progress. Is her Dr. visit today?
Howard....Nice job on the run.
Jeff...Poor Paula, everyone has to watch her take a potty break. She's taken alot of slack for that one before. I say, "When you gotta go, you gotta go." We were hoping for Ryan Hall to medal, but it just wasn't his day. He is an amazing runner and we'll be seeing more of him. And about the World Series.....Go Hawaii! That's awesome! Brian Clay is amazing as well and seems like he's a nice guy to boot!
Mike...WTG with meeting up with the speedy neighbor and keeping up.
Kira...WTG on the run with your brother. What a huge accomplishment and a woman empowerment moment for you. Was he blown away that you've become such a great runner? Have a great vacation at my favorite place in the World.:)
Maria...:pixiedust: coming your way! Good luck on the work deadlines.
Cindy...Oh no! My Fiber One bars aren't what they're made out to be? I love those things and they're only 2pts. Thanks for the fiber info. I'll have to read more about this.
Lisa....busy, busy, busy...Yum, mango margarita's....nice job on the long run, especially with hills.
Everyone else...., stay strong

I had a fun weekend with a couple of parties thrown in. That means I did a little bit of cheating, but not bad. Ran my 3 miles on Saturday and I forgot to wear my watch. This was not neccessarily a bad thing and I ran just to run. We were going to take a family hike yesterday and then LTO. It's 4 miles for me today (probably on the TM), followed by a CPR class and than a mandatory sports meeting at the high school. Take care all and have a great day.

Another busy Monday......have I said that I miss Nancy yet?????? Only about a dozen times I am sure.

Weekends go too fast, and I hate Mondays..... :headache:

To much to do, to little time. I was to get up to run today, but I woke up numerous times last night with a really sore throat. It's burning like crazy right now, even after my Advil. What's with that???? I do not need to get sick on top of everything. It's certainly not from overtraining!!!!!:rolleyes1 Wow, I am so behind my mileage.......

I also ate what I wanted all weekend.....:rolleyes1

Oh well.......

Jeff: Hawaii looked awesome yesterday.....you have every reason to be proud!

Howard: Nice mileage!

Maria: Sorry to hear about the deadlines!!!!!!!! Hope it all goes well.

Amy: WTG with the weight loss! One-derland is a great place! :cool1:

Lisa: Good run!!!!! Good luck with your mileage goals......can you run for me too????? Pretty please??????:yay:

Bill: Where are you?????

Have a nice day Lean Meaners!!!!

Beth

Hi Lean, Meaners!

I hope things are going well for everyone. I recently fell off the healthy-eating wagon. Then I fell off the running wagon for a few days due to migraines. I also fell of the yoga/pilates wagon. I guess I've been jumping off wagons left and right. :scared1: I've just climbed back onto the running wagon and I'm hoping the rest will follow.

I hope you're all having a great week and I'm hoping to catch up and keep up with this thread very soon! :)

Welcome pretty princess, Julie. Can't have enouth princesses don't cha know.:)

Happy Panda:hippie:

Thank you Dave and everyone else for all of the welcomes. I'm so glad to be here :goodvibes , although it's hard to keep up with this thread!

Julie....jump on in, the water's fine.:yay: My DH has started watching his weight and eating healthier again. It makes it so much easier to have a partner in crime;), oh, I mean in healthy living!

DH & I were supposed to be doing this too. I agree that it's so much easier doing it with someone else. Unfortunately, cookouts, dinner with friends, and a very busy couple of weeks have interfered with our good intentions. :sad2:

Julie I totally :lovestruc  beer. It's definitely my major weakness! I have no problem giving up sweets and that sort of thing, but beer is another story. I know they have those shirts that say I run so I can eat, I would love one that says I run so I can drink!

Amy, you sound like my kinda girl! :drinking1

Vic, Wendy, Cindy, Debra, Bill, Julie -- I promise not to scare anyone else away with my wildlife stories. I guess the paralyzed squirrel and the daylight oppossum will have to remain a mystery! :rotfl:

Aw, c'mon Maria, you can't just leave us in suspense like that! I have a few squirrel stories myself. Who would have thought that we city girls would be exchanging wildlife stories? :rotfl:

Have a great day all. Hope everyone is getting in their repetitions, and training safely in their comfort zone. Listen to your body, it tells you when you've either had enough, or needs more. Never overtrain, it just sets you back.

Jeff, thanks for your words of wisdom. I think I was heading in the direction of overtraining, but my DH cautioned me against it. I hate it when he's right.

Hey Lean Meaners!

Sounds like everyone had a good weekend!

I've said it before, but Howard, Jeff,Mike :worship: :worship: on your miles and splits!

Also, Lisa, Kira,Cindy:woohoo: on getting your LR's in and your pace! Kira, enjoy your WDW trip! :)

Beth Also ate what I wanted to all weekend. I would think that my recent loss and an upcoming vacay would have kept me motivated to stay on track. :confused3 Also, there seems to be alot of yucky cold like sicknesses going around everywhere. Hope you feel better. :goodvibes

Julie We can get back on the wagon together!:goodvibes

Tracey Very glad I am in better shape now that we're moments away from having a walker! :scared1: She started taking 4 steps at a time this weekend, instead of only 2.

Dave:woohoo: on the clothes shopping!

Maria I know exactly how you feel about the houseguests. We usually experience exactly the same situtation in the winter, because everyone wants to visit FL in the winter! :scared1: (not that I blame them)

Stacie, Debra and anyone else I missed:wave:

We ended up at Sea World and EPCOT this Saturday. Lots of fun, not crowded only a little rain. Definitely fell off the healthier eating wagon here. But since I walked at least 8 miles, maybe it evens out? :confused3

I am supposed to do W6D3 today since I didn't do it yesterday. But something aggravated my cold and/or allergies over the weekend so I 'm not feeling the motivation to do it.Ugh. At a minimum I'll put in some walking miles. I realized in the 2 weeks leading up to my weight loss I walked and or ran 2 miles almost every day and worked in pilates.

Miss Delena's appointment went well. She'll be on a very low dose antibiotic for now (as we expected) and will have ultrasounds every so often to check on the reflux. Also, one of her kidneys is larger than the other (which is normal), but is right on the high end of normal, so that is also something they will have to keep an eye on.

I am pretty certain now that I will be unempoyed by Nov 1st. As much as it stinks to get laid off, it's probably time for me to move on anyhow. DH and I have a plan so I could stay home through the holidays and then get a job early in 2009. And when I do go back to work, it will probably only be part time. That's all I really need to work.

Have a good afternoon everyone!

Amy

Hi guys.

I met with the general manager of the Total Fitness Connection chain of health clubs today. I was just wanting to get a free membership for racing and training wearing shirts with their logo. Well it seems that I must sing for my supper instead. They want me to work for them. I would basicly have a free hand to build a walking program. The success of the pogram would determine my compensation. They are going to do flyers and offer the program to current members and new members, the rest is up to me.

So I need to put together a bio to tell members what I have to offer them. Then put together a class plan to teach people to walk more efficiently for fitness and later competition if they desire.

Another area I can gain from is the PTs can turn people over to me that are ready to move from PT to light exercise like walking. Also helping people put together a program of exercise for weight control.

I have a huge gym with an enclosed area with 4 tennis courts that has a track around it I can use for my walkers. Then a big aerobics room for sretching instruction.

So now I need to put it all together and see what comes of it.

No Jeff I still have my regular job, I would be doing this in my spare time. I work 12:30 to 9pm at my regular job so I have my mornings for training and working with this walking program.

I just need to decide how much time and energy to put into it. I'm thinking maybe 2 classes a week in the early mornings like 6:30 to 7:30. That wouldn't take away to mucdh of my training time.
