Tough decision! All my life, I have thought I would have liked to have been a SAHM, because I have always wanted to be a mother.
However, my husband's job does not allow for that (unless we'd switch to one car and a tiny house and no vacations ever...no thanks). What we were able to do was save a lot of money into a "baby fund" so I could take 1-2 years off when my daughter is born.
She is 6 weeks old now. I love her to pieces and cherish our time together. However, I loved my job, too (healthcare IT). I left work crying on my last day...that's how sad I was to leave! I am fortunate enough that I am in a hot market with some desirable credentials, and I have a few firms discussing some part-time work options with me.
Since I would have the opportunity to work part time, I see that as a way to stretch out my time not working full-time until at least my daughter goes to kindergarten. It seems like a great compromise to me...I will get some "adult" time, not miss out on industry changes or have a giant gap in my resume, and spend a lot of time with my daughter.
I understand most people don't have a part time work option (and have it make financial sense with paying for child care on top of that...), but I'm going to give it a try at the end of this year and hope it works for my family.
Good luck, OP.
