Islands of Adventure!
We were looking forward to this day, particularly for Harry Potter world!
I had just been to see the HP world last year, and I'm going back in two months, but even though nothing's changed it's still beautiful and moving. There is nothing like that glimpse of Hogwarts castle:
The first thing we decided to do was go on the ride in the castle, the Forbidden Journey. We had tried to arrive early so we could get on line, but with a group of 12 it's impossible to get out the door on time. So we arrived at Universal at around 8:30, and got to HP at 8:45 - and the sign said there was already a 90 minute wait. We decided we might as well wait it out.
Now, the line for this ride is a little confusing, especially if you have a bag and need a locker (otherwise it's pretty straight forward). I had my backpack, so we got in line and when we got to the front of the castle I had to go drop it in a locker. When I got out of the lockers there were people telling you where to do, and a woman pointed us in a direction and we got on line again. Well, we're walking through, and I'm thinking to myself, "I SWEAR I didn't see all of this last time!" And I knew that the beginning of the wait was outside, so I had a feeling something was wrong. But we wait on this line, and after about ten minutes we get to another worker. She asks us if we were waiting for the ride or the castle tour. We said the ride and she told us we were on the wrong line. Apparently we weren't the only ones that had been misdirected, there was a whole group of people in front of us and behind us that had been told the same thing. So at first I thought we'd have to go back to the front of the line. Well, I guess they felt bad about making us wait for the 15 minutes already and couldn't just get us to the same spot we would've been on the line, so they moved us right to the front for the ride and we literally walked right on. Waited about 15 minutes total. So due to someone's error we really lucked out with this wait!

The only negative was that we missed the little pre-show with Harry, Ron, and Hermione and the backstory. I'd seen it before so as we were loading I quickly summarized for Jason and his brother
As for the ride itself, I find it quite scary! I'm pretty sure I would never go on this ride normally if it wasn't Harry Potter themed. The first time on I ended up with my eyes closed for most of it. I did better this time - I only closed my eyes for about half the time! Once we got to the spiders it was too scary for me! But I'm confident that when I go back this week I'll do even better! The technology and how this ride is done is really amazing though, extremely impressive.
We also rode the Dragon Challenge coaster, which had less of a wait. I like it a lot, but the others in my group complained that it was way too short. It is pretty short, but at least we didn't wait an hour so I don't really mind. We checked out Ollivander's and Dervish and Banges, and then it was time for butterbeer!
There's always a ridiculously long line at the butterbeer cart, so we used my trick I used last time - get it inside at the Hog's Head. There's a wait there too, but it's inside and usually a lot shorter.
Jason and I raising our glasses of butterbeer:
No one really wanted to ride the Hippogriff coaster (I did it last time and didn't really need to again), so we went to the Jurassic Park ride. I got on line with them (Jason's aunt, uncle, and grandfather decided to pass), but after about 10 minutes they made the announcement that "This ride contains an 85 foot drop into total darkness." I already hate anything scary to begin with, and dinosaurs are not my favorite, but I really hate the dark, so I decided to back it up and get off the line at this point. Maybe I could have handled it, but I get scared really easily and see no reason to put myself through it on a day I want to have fun! As it turns out, the ride got stopped for about 20 minutes... and it was while they were on it! Luckily they were in stegosaurus land, where it isn't as scary as some of the rest. But it took a long time for them to exit the ride since it was delayed, so I waited quite awhile. Here's a pic I got of them after they came down the drop!
Because they had to wait, they each got a one time use "fast pass" or whatever you call it at Universal, that they could use for almost any other ride. This became important later on...
Then it was time for lunch. We always just went to nearest place, which today was right next to the Jurassic Park ride:
Jason got the turkey leg, as did his cousin Linda. They both liked it. Jason loves turkey legs like that, though Linda said there was way too much food there for her to eat. They both said the corn wasn't that great. Jason said it was dry and almost tasteless.
I went for the bacon cheeseburger. Not really my usual choice, but nothing else was really appealing to me. This was actually quite tasty, if nothing all that special. The fries were good too.
Liz, also at our table, had the rotisserie chicken. She enjoyed this. It looks pretty much like the same meal I got at the Three Broomsticks last year, which I remember as being decent. Same problem with the corn again:
After lunch we journeyed through Toon Lagoon, where I stopped to get a picture with Betty Boop! No one else was really into meeting the characters anywhere, so this is the only character pic I got this trip, not even any in Disney
There were two more rides we really wanted to try: The Hulk coaster and the Spiderman Ride. We passed by Spiderman, saw the 85 minute wait, and decided to see what the hulk had. It was about 30 minutes, and not too bad. The wait actually went really quickly because they had TV screens everywhere showing clips from the hulk cartoon. That ride itself is so much fun. It's a really great roller coaster, one of the best I've been on, and it lasts for a long time.
We went back to Spiderman and they decided to ride it using their express pass they got from Jurassic park. Now if you recall, I was not on this ride and so I did not have one of these passes. However, Jason's dad offered to give me his, and though we tried to argue with him he insisted. He claimed he wasn't that interested in the spiderman ride anyway. So we got on the express lane. Let me tell you, we were on that ride in 5 minutes. Amazing. The ride itself was okay. It's 3D, and they really go for all of that "in your face" stuff, which isn't my favorite. And I think Harry Potter, which is similar in style, is more well done. Though the 3D in spiderman definitely made it more scary than I was expecting.
Afterward the others decided to ride Dr. Doom's FearFall, but I hate those sorts of rides so I stayed with Jason's aunt. We decided to go in a gift shop, and just as we were stepping inside it started to rain. Well, it turned into a complete down pour. I know that happens a lot in Orlando, and we waited for it to pass, but it was a long one... it lasted almost 2 hours, and there was really nothing to do but sit or stand in the shop. Luckily the queue for fearfall was inside, so the others were dry. After the rain finally stopped and they eventually got on Fearfall, we headed back to HP to visit Honeydukes and then we decided to go home. Universal is really not as appealing to me as Disney (except for Harry Potter), so I didn't mind that we hadn't done all that there was to do.
Our next (and last) day was at Hollywood Studios! Yay Disney!
