Hello all,
First of all I would like to thank everyone for all of your prayers, thoughts and good wishes, we are very grateful and need your continued effort.
Towards the end of the day yesterday Becca did start to come into consciousness a little bit. She still hasnt talked but does seem to know when someone is talking to her. She will squeeze your hand if you ask her to but not much else. She looks through you, not at you and because of the greater awareness she seems to be suffering from pain more than before.
We cannot tell if she recognizes myself and David but we do know that when she hears us talking it seems to disturb her a great deal.
At the moment they are pumping copious amounts of antibiotics into her to treat the bacteria which leaked into her brain. She is also on steriods for the swelling in her brain but they cant give too many of those because they interfere somewhat with the antibiotics. They feel that the bacteria is the life threatening condition at the moment and that overides the swelling so the bacteria takes precedence.
As for the pain, they are only able to treat with tylonol or a very, very mild opiate. Nothing stronger because they need to see that she stays stable neurologically and opiates mask reactions that they need to see in her.
We had 2 hours sleep yesterday from 10am till 12pm in a parents room in the hospital, this was the first sleep we had from 6am the previous day so we were walking zombies. We have a room now at the McDonald house so we got some sleep overnight.
We went over to see becca this morning, it must have been the shortest visit ever!
She has had a restless night with pain and was sleeping when we went in.......Until she heard our voices! She became very agitated and was moaning and tossing and turning and was just very unhappy. We calmed her down (she still doest show any outward sign of knowing us) and she went back to sleep.
We touched base with the nurse about overnight happenings and learned that she had been having more discomfort and had required more pain meds. As she heard our voices she again became agitated and started struggling again so we calmed her down again. We kept quiet for a while and just listened to the nurse talking to us and telling us about the over night happenings. At some point we had to talk again, becca noticed and again became agitated so we left.
We think that Becca does recognise when we are there now and it frustrates her that she cant reach us and we cant reach her. Or just frustrates her that we, her mummy and Daddy cant make her hell stop. Whatever, we are not helping being with her at this point so we are staying away for a while. We will go back throughout the day to see if the situation changes.
Thats it for now, I will carry on updating as I can.
Love
