Bears in Alaska in late June

I'm fairly sure this is not possible - but does anyone have any bear activity/excursion suggestions for June? We sail the 18th. Aside from the Grouse Mtn bear breakfast, I’m coming up empty. Which means one sad family member. (Cruising later in the season wasn’t an option.)

We were on the first cruise of the Disney season and we did the Taku Glacier Lodge Tour. It's a tour over glaciers on a flight plane, then lunch at this remote cabin and time to walk, explore etc. They do not guarantee bears, but they do tell you that they often come over due to the fresh cooked Salmon on the open outdoor grill. We saw two bears. Here is our experience at Taku Glacier Lodge. http://frequentlyaskeddisneyblog.com/disney-cruise-alaska-part-25/ Also the trails around Mendenhall Glacier often have bears. You may not seem them catching and eating salmon, but you just may very well see bears on your June Alaska trip.

Just went to a AAA travel show here in Orlando. Sat in on a Princess Cruise presentation. The presenter said the best time to see bears are from July to August when salmon are traveling upstream and the bears come down to the rivers to catch them.

We went on your same DCL June Alaska cruise last year. We saw no bears on our DCL excursions, even the Mendenhall nature walk. We were not promised that we would see them, so did not care. Wife and I visited Alaska at the end of May for three weeks years ago and saw many in Denali and on hikes outside of Juneau. Some excursions will improve your chances, but those guys are finicky and avoid humans, unless it is a mother bear with cubs. We took binoculars and watched the shoreline in the hopes of seeing critters. At the glacier we saw loads of seals on ice flows. Whales can be seen on this cruise, too, but they are random unless you take an excursion specifically for them. If you plan to hike in Alaska take bear spray, just in case. This is an awesome cruise...you will love it.

Agree with all of the above responses. Bear excursions - the ones specifically designed to see bears - are timed to the salmon runs in particular areas (typically mid to late July and August). The operators know they bears will be at certain rivers and streams and that's where they take you. The salmon can be so thick in the river, it's really a sight to see. If you had a net, you could just scoop them up! Bear paradise.

All that being said, the bears are still around other months, just not as likely to be concentrated in one particular area. You may very well see bears (I've read lots of reports of people seeing them at Mendenhall, though we did not), but you may not. I do think that the further you get away from the port towns and out into the wilderness, the better chance you have. There are so many other things to experience in Alaska, that I don't think it will impact your trip too much either way. As you noted, sailing later wasn't an option, so I wouldn't worry about it about it and just enjoy the amazing things you will see!

Edited to add: We used Island Wings last summer for a bear excursion. They were great to work with and communicate with before hand about choosing the right tour. While they might not be offering a dedicated bear tour when you are there, they offer plenty of other flight seeing tours, and they should be able to tell you if they have one with at least a decent chance of seeing bears. It's worth a try anyway.

Not on Disney but we saw many bears on the shore on our HAL cruise.

I once took the last cruise of the season and in Juneau I noticed several bears near the entrance to Mendenhall Glacier while on a bicycle tour

I second Taku. It was one of my favorite excursions. Although not guaranteed there’s a greater chance of a bear sighting since they are coming to a known food source and not a salmon run. Recommend not going to the very first excursion time since they come to eat the first seatings leftover salmon juice.

We were on the first excursion of the day. The bears came right at the end of our time there and we got a quick glimpse as they hurried us to board the waiting planes. The group arriving however did get to start their time watching bears! We were just glad they showed up at all.

Thanks everyone for your responses! We picked as late in the season as we could, and I'm not sure we could have made any other week work once we factored in various dance recitals, camps, etc anyway! I'm not the "bear person" but am trying to help her find something. She found one bear-focused flight excursion that made no guarantees for June, but to be honest - it sounded like potentially paying a ton of money to fly around looking for bears and never seeing them. Hard to justify the expense, and no one else in the extended family would have picked that excursion to begin with, regardless of the likelihood of seeing bears. She's kind of on her own on this one.

Saw a bear on the side of the road during a Skagway bus/train excursion a couple years ago. It was the only bear we saw during the whole trip.

I also agree about the Taku excursion. One big bear (they called her Lois) came out and waited for us to go in to eat, then hopped up on the grill and had a snack.
