Bear kills baby

Claudia1 is right. This is an ultra-Orthodox Jewish community. For the summer, the people live in bungalows very close together (sort of like a camp). This bear came into the area and everyone went into a panic. The mother ran and got her two older children (still little kids) and took them in the house. She came back out to get the baby who was in the stroller near the porch and found this horrific scene. In hindsight, you might wonder why she didn't get the baby first but I guess it's because she felt the child was almost in the house. The bear was tested and found not to be rabid. He didn't exactly "attack" but rather just found a food source. The bears are getting too bold when they walk into populated areas.

This has to have been a nightmare.

I had heard that the two older, little kids were playing right there near the mother. What I don't understand is why she didn't throw the two older kids on top of the baby, grab the baby in a foot ball hold,...anything but why would she hurry the two other children in and have to come back out for the baby. It seems like a stupid lapse in judgement that I am sure she will have to live with forever. My heart goes out to them.

PAM, I don't "blame" GOD for anything.........because I see him/her as an illusion created by man:) .

However, I have noticed on the DIS that believers often "praise" him when things go well...........but refrain from casting any responsibility upon him when things go poorly.   . That's convenient!!!!:smooth:

Such a sad story, binny. What an awful thing to happen. God bless this family.

We often go up to the Franconia area in New Hampshire and when we do one of our favorite places to visit is Clark's Trading Post where this wonderful family has a great show of trained black bears. The trust between this family and the bears is quite evident in the show.

This year for the firs time after the Bear show they were handing out cards on safety around black bears. People feeding black bears has become a very large problem, not only for people but also the bears, since they come to depend on that food and when it is not available they can starve and die.

Black bear attacks are very rare with only 15 occuring in the last century. I would venture to guess that you've got more of a chance of being attacked by a dog than a black bear.

I feel horrible for the family and the loss of their child and my heart goes out to them.
