Just recently we had to have our youngest dachshund put down due to a very agressive bone/muscular disease. He was my younger daughter's dog, and she knows that when the time is right, we will be getting another dog. She is trying to decide between a beagle and a yorkie. Now, I should tell you that we are a hound family, always have been and always will be. We have doxies, and my father raised beagles for many, many years. Obviously, I'm leaning to the beagle decision, but I want her to pick the breed that she will enjoy most. So, I'm open to hearing all the good and bad about both breeds. Thanks!

I'm partial to terriers and biased against hounds - so my vote is for the yorkie

Both breeds are cute but WAY to much barking for us.

Good Luck with your decision:dogdance::dog2::dog:

I would lean towards Yorkie- the people behind us have a beagle and that darn thing barks/howls all the time-the police are getting tired of going there since all the neighbors are calling in about it!

We adopted a two year old beagle in October. He came to us not nuetered. Well, we fixed that. He has calmed down a lot and his behavior is much better (he was being kind of gross to my children and female dog-if you know what I mean).

I have to tell you, do not get a beagle unless you are prepared for a very vocal dog. Benji barks at just about anyting. And it it not a quiet bark, but a howl. It goes on all day. We have gotten used to it and he knows when we have had enough. Our neighbors are not happy when he is in the yard.

Also, he requires a lot of excercise. We take both dogs for two walks a day-about two miles. He still needs to run in the back yard.

Other than that, he is a very cute dog and we have grown to really love him. I was just not used to a dog that loud.

I would pick a Beagle over a Yorkie, but then I'm partial to hounds too. My parents have a smoothhaired Dachshund and I have a longhaired Dachshund. I don't know about the Dachsies you've raised, but mine are both big barkers, so if yours are similar, I don't think a noisy Beagle would be a difficult adjustment.

Oh my word....that face! Okay, I think that probably seals the deal. How can I not have another hound face? Oh, and the barking/baying doesn't bother me a bit. Between, my dad, my brother, and me, we have four dachshunds and one overgrown beagle. I'm used to that, completely!

It is a personal thing, I love/adore my beagle, would never have a terr, esp a yorkie BUT that is not to say they are not as nice and desirable as orly.
Orly is menta, devil may care attitude, very bright, if not at first, try, try, try and then try again, they say the lemon and whites are worse/harder to cope with than the tris, My mum would never have a beagle although she loves him, she says it is like having 3 5year olds in the house, you can NOT keep up with him, even after a 6 mile run, his brain and body are in hyper drive!!

We had a wonderful female doxie for 13 years...after she passed I swore I would never get anotherdog but then we met our Yorkie Llasa mix and he is my best buddy. I can't imagine our family with out him. Anyway, I fid he barks about the same amount or less then our doxie. On the other hand we lived next door to a beagle for a year and the howling was too much for us. But they are awfully cute too:confused3

Orly is not that noisy at all, trouble is when he is making a noise he cant hear stuff so he is not to bad at all, in fact hes good, he will bark when folk come around but we encourage that.

Orly's a gorgeous boy.

My beagle Jessie is very laid-back, not a howler at all. She is a little older, though- she was a rescue, and we estimate her age at about 5 when we got her (about 7 now.)

We had her for almost a year before we even knew that she *could* howl! She grunts and makes funny little quiet noises while staring at you intently, like she's having a conversation with you, but rarely more than that. Her barking is very low-key. She might let out an occasional single bark to let you know she needs out if you haven't noticed her standing at the door, or to tell you that her water dish is empty if you've ignored the sound of her pushing it around on the tile floor, but that's about the extent of it. Even if rabbits or birds are in the yard when she's outside, she's quiet. VERY focused on the interesting visitor, but quiet.

I guess they're all different, but we're very happy with our little hound!

I would choose a Yorkie. I like beagles, but I find them to be stubborn and difficult to train.

Stubborn,, lol:lmao: youve got them mixed up with another breed!!!Orly trains me rather than me train him, I can never understand when folk say they are stupid, he is way too clever for his own gd, dont get me started!

My hubby phoned me at work to say the 2nd time in 4 years he was baying, he met 2 fox cubs up the forrest and lost the plot.

Jessie is very sweet, I thnk Orly would love her.

It depends on how old your DD is. We have had 2 Yorkies and I would never have one with a small child in the house. If they are school age kids, I think you would be fine. What I like about Yorkies is they are great if you have allergies. They have hair instead of fur, so you don't get the dander you get with other dogs.

My daughter is 14 and has been around dogs since birth. Doxies can get a bit snippy, so she is used to all that. I really think she is leaning more and more to the beagle. (Of course, mom has nothing to do with that. :rotfl2: )

I forgot to add that Jessie is sometimes pretty noisy, like right now.

Snoring. Loudly. :rotfl2:
