Beagle vs Yorkie...All Opinions, Please!

I had 2 beagles growing up and have 2 yorkies now. I would say go for the Yorkie, but I loved all of my dogs. My beagles (one in particular) had a big problem with digging out and digging in general. I still remember the trauma of my dogs digging out and wondering if they were okay. We were always able to find them or bail them out of jail (aka the pound) but it was traumatic for me as a child. However, I remember them being just wonderful and sweet natured.

Our Yorkies have no desire to dig and are such lap dogs. They sleep with DH and I, and they are fine with our kids. However, we do not have the very tiny Yorkies. Chandler and Sydney are about 7lbs each. Chandler is almost 13 years old so he isn't in to playing with our kids (plus he was our dog before we had kids) but would protect them no matter what. Sydney on the other hand is 3 years old and loves to play with the kids. She follows them everywhere. If there is a fort, she jumps in it. If they are running and playing in the yard, she is too. She is a great kid dog.

I don't think you can go wrong with either breed.

Another vote for the Yorkie. They don't shed. They are smart as can be. Cute as can be, too.

I wouldn't deliberately buy a small one (teacup). I prefer the larger Yorkies.
Great family pet.:)

Our friends have 2 beagles. Their beagles jump up on their kitchen counters to get at food! All the way up! Yuck, yuck, yuck!

You know, I'm gonna have to say the beagle, of course.

We've had our male beagle since he was 6 months old and he's 13 1/2 now. He's sitting at my feet as I type.

He's the sweetest dog, very smart and a good buddy to me. We have several beagles i the neighborhood. The males don't seem to bay as much as the females. My dog rarely bays, he has to be really upset (as in deer i nthe yard).

Otherwise, he's got a regular bark not hard on the ears at all.

herc.

I guess you know then how much beagles shed and how incredibly stubborn and bull-headed they are. :headache:

I had a beagle for 14 years when I had to put her down due to kidney failure. Great dog but oh so bull-headed.

Not much experience with yorkies except my in-laws had one and that thing yapped so much I wanted to duct tape his mouth. At least they don't shed though but need bathed and groomed often.

Yep, I know all about that hound stubborness. It doesn't bother me, though, I think it adds to their charm.

We have a beagle, and she rarely barks, only if she hears someone pull into the driveway. She's been hard to housetrain, but other than that, she's been a great dog. I'm not a big terrier fan, as a lot of them are very yappie.

I would lean towards Yorkie- the people behind us have a beagle and that darn thing barks/howls all the time-the police are getting tired of going there since all the neighbors are calling in about it!

I'd go with Yorkie, too, for the same reason. A neighbor down the street has a pair of male beagles and the howl is something nightmares are made of. A flea farts and they are yowling. They are rather a nuisance IMHO. Thank God we are far enough away to not have to really hear it unless we are outside doing yardwork.

Have to vote for the beagle. It's the only breed of dog we ever get, and we have 3 kids. They have such a sweet nature, and we have never had the barking issue so many here are complaining about. ???

Then again, ours have always been house dogs. Our latest will bark if he's outside with us and hears something, but when we're in the house, he can usually be found in bed, snoozing quietly.

Our Snoopy is a rescue, at 7 years old, now 13. He has some health issues, age related, so we are at the vet quite often. Even the vet says how much he likes the beagles as they are usually such easy going dogs.

Our neighbors have Yorkies and I can always hear them yapping, in or out of the house. They look cute, but wouldn't want one.

I vote Beagle.

Yes they are stubborn, howlers, hard to housetrain....etc.....but they will give you UNCONDITIONAL love their entire lives. They are very social and they are friendly to EVERYONE.

My parents had 3 as I was growing up. They were all house dogs and males, although my dad did hunt 2 of them. None were howlers or diggers. 1 was very hard to housetrain the others weren't. The one they have now is an absolute trip and EXTREMELY intelligent. I have never seen a dog that smart. The other too were dumb as rocks, but so sweet and great with us kids.

My Beagle is a howler. He barks at EVERYTHING except when DH comes home late at night from poker.....he sleeps right through that:rotfl: He also needs constant attention and he is extremely lazy. Murphy was a cinch to housebreak though and he stays in our yard pretty well unleashed. He was recently diagnosed with an underactive thyroid and has now lost a ton of weight and is getting much more active again. He is a sweetheart with my 2 year old DS.

Our babysitter has a Yorkie. He yips/barks all day long. He is upstairs during the day, but every now and then she brings him down. He hates the kids....won't go near them. He is also very skittish around adults. My DH and I were at the sitters Engagement party (ie just adults there) and out of nowhere their dog just attacked my husbands leg. He is absolutely adorable, but I think he is definitely a one person or small, quiet family dog!

Just recently we had to have our youngest dachshund put down due to a very agressive bone/muscular disease. He was my younger daughter's dog, and she knows that when the time is right, we will be getting another dog. She is trying to decide between a beagle and a yorkie. Now, I should tell you that we are a hound family, always have been and always will be. We have doxies, and my father raised beagles for many, many years. Obviously, I'm leaning to the beagle decision, but I want her to pick the breed that she will enjoy most. So, I'm open to hearing all the good and bad about both breeds. Thanks!

I know that you will all be shocked, but I'm a big beagle fan!! I also realize that beagles aren't for everyone. It sounds like you know what you would be getting yourself into with a beagle. I see too many people who purchase dogs without researching the breed and then are disappointed.

Yorkies are very cute too (please don't tell my beagles that I said that), but I don't know much about them.

I vote male Yorkie I have on named Walter. We had a beagle a long time ago & could not house train him.

As you can see my vote is for a Beagle. :lovestruc

Have you decided yet? I have had 2 beagles and they were/are completely different personalities. Both were very easy to housetrain. They do bark but it can be controlled. My beagle is afraid of a Flyswatter. ;) We have never used it but you can threaten her with it and she calms down immediately.

I'll take the barking anyday along with all that overwhelming, unconditional love.:lovestruc

Annie is lovely, Orly was easy to house train and pees on command like service dog, Got him at 7 weeks and he has only pood in the house twice since then!
Now he would drink 10 gallons a day, so when he wasa young and I was used to collies he did pee lots till i decided he just loved to drink.
