Wasn't sure where to post this question- so I thought I would start with the smartest group of all- the camping forum. My DW and I are staying at the Fort in September and looking at a possible beach day trip, but wasn't sure where would be the best place to go- Cocoa, Dayton, etc. Just wondering if anybody has done this during their trip and could provide some input.

Daytona is neat because it is ...well Daytona. You can drive and park on the beach...lots of stuff happening there. Cocoa is smaller and not nearly as commercialized.
You'll enjoy either one and both are an easy drive from the Ft.
The shuttle was originally supposed to launch Sept. 16th but just checked and they moved it to November. You could have seen it from Cocoa Beach if it would have worked out.

havent made the drive to daytona in quite a few years but we regularly stay in a friends condo on cocoa beach and make the drive to disney world. just take 417 to 528 (both toll) and it will dump you right into cocoa beach. the drive usually takes 75 to 90 minutes and cost you around $4 if i remember correctly. i believe it is a little farther to daytona but like i said i havent made that trip in 10 years or more.
cocoa beach has several city owned beaches but the one i am familiar with is fischer park. it is about 1/2 mile south of ron jon`s. there is a traffic light at the entrance to the park and a wendys restaurant across the street. there are buildings/restrooms to change in but they leave a little to be desired as far as cleanliness, especially after you get used to the comfort stations at disney. there is also a publix next to the wendys and several other restaurants in the same complex so if you need anything it is there. The other place i know about is the pier which is about 1/4 mile north of ron jons but i am not sure of the accesability to changing rooms. the pier has several restaurants on it and you can even rent a pole and drown a few worms.
hope this helps steve

COCOA is Closer, also Tampa/ St Pete is not that far away if you want to head to see the Gulf of Mexico

On every trip we set aside at least one day for Daytona Beach (weather permitting of course). We spent Christmas Ever 2008 on the warm sand on a sunny 85 degree day having left home with a major blizzard nipping at our heals just a couple of days earlier. It was so cool seeing kids making sand men instead of snow men! :santa:
