Be warned: I saw The Color Purple on Broadway last night...

and was not impressed. Of all of the shows that I saw this last year (about 15), this one was my least favorite. I don't know, it was OK, but the story moved way too quick to follow (unless you've read the book or seen the movie) and to be honest, the music wasn't all that great. The performers were great, but they weren't given a lot to work with. Too bad, as I was hoping for something great from this one!

I don't understand why Oprah did this when the movie was a flop.

Don't get me wrong, I loved the movie and thought that the show on Broadway's success would be a no brainer...the show just doesn't work.

That's a shame. I wonder how it did in previews.

We saw a show in DC that was in it's trials on its way to Broadway. It never made it to broadway--wasn't very good! I want to say it was by Andrew Lloyd Webber or something. Anyhow--it was a famous person who had other successes. And this one didn't even come close.

Reviews were mixed, but I was hoping for the best. Some parts were so overly sappy that it was tough to watch. At one point, a love song was sung and as it ended and the stage faded to black, a...shooting...star...flew...by...ugh!! Serious cliche alert!! To be honest, the first act was alright, and things seemed to be looking up, but the second act really dragged, which was a killer.

The movie was a flop?!?!

According to imdb.com the budget was $15 mil and the gross in the US was
$98,467,863. That doesn't sound like a flop.

I absolutely loved the movie. I play it just to hear "God is tryin to tell you something". My favorite song.

You got the sound track to the movie? I do and love to imitate SHUG. DH was "Buster" and I was "Shug" one Halloween...should have seen us! :rotfl:

Hey, when are you going? Post what you think of it after you check it out!

I loved "God is tryin to tell you something" and "Sister" from the movie as well, unfortunately, it isn't in the musical. Both songs would have been a welcome addition!

Just wanted to mention that the musical I was talking about was Whistle Down the Wind and it was indeed an ALW musical. I remember it was quite boring.
