BCV- Snake

Thanks Simba's Mom and DVC John, I'll look up some information on those and try to impress my 11yo son - so he won't think I'm totally stupid!

That was most likely an Anhinga.
If the bird's body was completely submerged with just the head and neck out of the water, it was almost certainly an anhinga. It would also have a slender, straight, sharply-pointed beak.

Here's a link to some anhinga pictures. If you go to page 2 of the pix, you'll see a picture of an anhinga in the water with just its head out. http://animaldiversity.ummz.umich.edu/site/accounts/pictures/Anhinga_anhinga_0015.html

A cormorant would have its back out of the water like a duck and would have a hooked beak.

I saw one up in the tree at the DVC pool canal /parking lot side . I was on the couch and saw it's head moving. I thought it was a snake in the tree so went outside (1stfl) and it was one of those Birds.

We have also seen many around WDW in the water as well thinking it might be a snake.

And I think this is what they are all trying to eat . Back railing og BC/BCV facing Epcot one night about 3 of these were around the building and rail.

Looks like a cornsnake to me. We used to have one and they are harmless.

Lots of snakes in FL/WDW. DD found one as we walked to the mini-golf course near the Swan/Dolphin. She is a snake lover!

That's a giraffe! Must have escaped when they were moving the animals into the savannahs at AKV!

Why did I read this thread?!?!?!?! :scared1: For me, when it comes to snakes and alligators, ignorance is bliss! I did not need to read this!!! Whether it is a copperhead or corn snake, I am choosing to believe it was a corn snake and that dangerous snakes never crawl onto WDW property! But believe me, if I ever do come across a snake while at BCV or WDW, I will assume it is dangerous and run in the other direction no matter what. If DH and DS15 do nothing to protect me, they are on their own!!!! :scared1:

Seriously...it IS a corn snake.

And you may be right about dangerous snakes never coming onsite. That just wouldn't be magical. I understand they are restricted to offsite properties.

Now...about the ducks pooping in SAB...

That was most likely an Anhinga. Although I'm an avid birder, I've got to admit that I mistook one for a snake rearing its head out of the water for the first several seconds that I saw one once. Boy, was I scared til I figured out what it was! It's a good thing I didn't say anything to the other birders with me-they no doubt would have corrected me accompanied by a liberal dose of laughter.

Don't feel bad... we did the same thing at HHI. The first thing we spotted during the tropical storm Barry was this head above water moving to the shore. We thought it was snake. Later on we came to the conclusion it was in fact an Anhinga.

I saw a pretty good sized snake when Iwas walking from the International gate at Epcot back towards Yacht Club a couple years ago.

Hi all!

We just got back on 6/20, and on Saturday the 16th, as we were walking down to the IG after dinner at Le Cellier (waaay too salty, BTW), we saw a small black racer (like maybe 12 inches...it was a baby) crossing the path.

My mom, who is DEATHLY afraid of snakes of any type---can't even watch them on TV---and who was on an ECV, saw the thing and sped up. My wife and I immediately yelled out that it was chasing her and she floored it (we call that speed "Full Rabbit" owing to the picture on the dial of the scooter's control panel), rocketing down the hill toward the IG at breakneck speed.

When we finally got down there, she had already gone through the exit and was halfway back across the bridge to BWI by the time we caught up to her. Lucky there weren't any cops around, I guess...

Oh, and I know, I am a mean son who should be nicer to my mother. But you would have thought she thinks the snake can jump vertically up into the ECV seat or something, by the way she took off.

Just thought I'd share!

Thanks for making me laugh as hard as I have in a while. I could visualize that whole story in that area, and was laughing for a few minutes. Glad to hear that mom was just fine at the end of it. And no, it doesn't make you a bad son, just one with a good sense of humor!!

We were at BCV for nearly a week and didn't see any snakes (thank goodness), but I thought I saw one in the canal near the quiet pool. It was raised up out of the water (which I thought was really strange, but since I make it a point to NOT know about snakes....). Anyway, I pointed it out to my nature loving DS11 and he laughed at me and told me it was a bird. There was some large bird that would totally submerge it's entire body in the water and swim under water for a long time and then stick it's long, skinny neck and head (really looked like a snake) out of the water for 5-10 seconds then go back down. I know this thread is about snakes - but just wondering if any of you knowledgeable people know what kind of bird that was.

It's an Anhinga.

Hi,
Last year in August we were also at BC and encountered a rather large black snake near the entrance, it was in the bushes, to be honest it looked like a rubber snake until it move its head:scared1:
I soon ran but my husband has photos... yuck.
Ignorance is bliss.I could barely sleep that night I just hate them!

That looks a lot like my old red rat snake, or corn snake. They are harmless, unless you are a rat. But they do have a nip and can scare you when they strike. Of course, with any animal in the wild, it's better to give them their space.

Now...about the ducks pooping in SAB...

Now you have me all grossed out. I tried to pretend when I saw the ducks swimming in the GF pool that they were just Disney animatronic ducks and that I wouldn't be swimming along with all their duck germs and duck poop.

Thanks JimMIA for all your good nature advice. :yay: Here's a little piece of nature advice I like to give people visiting FL... lizards are not harmful or scary in any way! They eat our cockroaches... which also are not harmful, but gross. Lizards are actually very cute, like teeny weeny dinosaurs.

Oh great, good thing my DW doesn't read the DIS Boards. We will be staying at BCV beginning August 12th. I will just have to keep her attention elsewhere and not in the bushes. My DS loves the geccos, so hopefully that is all he will see and not bring attention to a rat snake to my DW.

Oh well, if I see one I will just have to relocate it to another part of BCV.

Keep a sharp eye when walking on the boardwalk too. Snakes like to appear, bobbing their heads up between the boardwalk edge and the grass (near ESPN) quite frequently.

I've gotten so that I walk dead center of the boards so I don't run the risk of being too close.

I too, am NOT a fan of snakes.

hi guys, I don't post often...but that is a corn snake, have one and it is very gentle.
