BCV, BLT or VGF - Thinking Aug Sept Oct UY

I am torn between these two resorts. We normally travel early November - December and then Feb to early March. So do I have the UYs correct? Is Aug, Sept or Oct better?

I would like the blue card to get special rates on ABD, but need to number crunch some more to see if just buying resale would be a better option for us. The other perks buying direct don't really interest us.

We are normally an Epcot family, but the 2042 expiration is a concern. In fact, 80% of our trips have been Beach Club Resort or Villas. I have read everyone say, buy where you want to stay, but the cost of BCV and BWV are still pretty high with 2042 expiration. My husband says, "Why stray from what we like?"

In addition, would probably buy in RIV, but the resale restriction is a concern. We are almost retired (late 50s) and I don't know if my kids would want to take on a contract like this when we are finished with it in 20 years. Therefore, I think BLT or VGF would have better value if we/they decide to sell.

Am I missing something? Should I revisit BCV resale?

If you think you will want to sell in 20 years, stay away from BWV and BCV. But if you want to enjoy those resorts for 20 years and then be released from having to worry about whether your kids want to inherit the contract, I say buy BCV, which is what you love.

Any of those UYs will work for the times of year you go as all your normal travel times.

I am not one who believes that resale value should be a part of the equation because while DVC has held good value, in 20 years, it may not.

So, if you go with BCV, or BWV, it’s a sunk cost in 20 years, If you buy RIV, it would certainly be worth more than either one of those and you are still a Skyliner ride away from Epcot and get a longer contract that your kids might want, Lets say they don’t, and you can only sell it for half of what you paid, would you have still gotten your moneys worth?

BLT and VGF are my two favorite MK resorts and we split stay a lot with those and BWV or BCV...soon to be a RIV as we own there now.

If you have enough points at one of those, depending on when you go, getting 1 bedrooms at BWV and BCV is possible at 7 months, Studios will be harder

I think DVC is too much money not to buy where you would be happy. All, IMO, are good choices.

Thank you! Just to double check. if I buy at RIV and gift the contract to my kids, this is not considered a resale, correct?

The ABD discount is interesting, I found this. "If a guest is a DVC member but paying for their Adventures By Disney vacations they will get the lowest rate based on the original price of the trip when it first opened for booking." I'd want to confirm this with an experienced travel agent and also Disney. And that's not much of a discount, if you can get the same discount early booking anyway. So, I'm just going to assume direct isn't worth much and go to resale (could be wrong). That's something you should look into and update everyone!

I agree with your husband on resale. Expiring in 20 years for you is what you want. So run out the clock on a 2042 BCV/BWV. OK, so they aren't the best mathematical value, but it's a few hundred bucks a year. Depending on room category, the point charts might even make them competitive. In some categories, BCV/BWV are actually GOOD value:

That is correct. You can make a gratuitous transfer to them and all the benefits stay with them,

Its why I actually bought RIV last year with my adult kids...selling BWV..so they are now direct members with blue card benefits, and we have a contract that goes 28 years longer.

So, as long as the AP discount is there, they are eligible and so will all of their families.

We, of course, paid for it all, and pay all the MFs. We figured Idown the road if none of them want it...though they love Disney like we do and one is a CM for Disney in NYC...they can sell them for cheap since they didn’t pay for them! Lol

Thank you for this! Do you have one RIV contract with your name and your adult kids on it or did you buy separate contracts?

In addition, how many names can you put on a contract?

We all are owners on one contract for 175 points at RIV. Since I wanted it part of my Aug UY, I had to put them as owners on my SSR too so it stayed one membership. So, they became owners of both.

I do have a Dec UY with both an SSR and BLT contract in it that only DH and I own.

You can have 6 owners on one contract. We have 5 since we have 3 adult children.

@Theta I travel roughly the same time of year as you and narrowed it down to an August or September UY for me based on the banking deadline and think either of those or October will work fine for you. I wound up with a September UY when the perfect Poly contract popped up. I think you will be fine with any of those choices. Unrelated, ARE you a Theta??? I am!

HAHAHA, I'm a theta too. That's how we ended up with all these spreadsheets!

You sound like you should be buying Beach Club resale to me. I get the kids thing and the expiration but honestly if you already love how you vacation why break it? I personally would never want to bequeath my children a financial obligation but I know others feel differently.

OT but I have my deeds are titled in a Revocable Trust. My kids can choose to keep them, or if not, will be sold off by the Trust.

Yeah my offspring could always just flat out refuse any particular thing I will to them, but I’m going to try to leave as much as possible in cash so they can use it the way that works best for them. If they want to buy DVC they can do that. Currently my 2 year old would probably prefer to spend it on monster trucks and my 4 year old on a really, really nice telescope.

My kids are already 18 and 22 and still total Disney lovers. They are thrilled that I'm considering their needs in my DVC planning / purchasing. My 22 yo is already on our contract and I have the form filled out to add my other daughter now that she turned 18. They are a part of the process of planning our add-ons. Honestly, they're the reason for our future add-on plan. I've gone so far as to set up a joint account with my kids that (among other things) will include a few years dues payments in there to tide them over in case it's an unexpected inheritance. However, if I see that enthusiasm change or their financial situation being a real issue, I'll try to take care of it before I go. But then, you never really know when you're gonna go, do you?!

@Theta I would recommend buying BCV. It's where you want to stay.

When we first started looking into DVC a few years ago, we both loved BWV and wanted to buy-in, but we were turned off by the shorter expiration date. Now that we're a few years into ownership and I've had more time to think about it, I regret that decision. We're very happy with the resorts we do have and we love them, but I find myself stalking at 7 months for BWV studios quite often. 21 years is a long, long time of Disney vacations, and you have no idea what you'll feel like in 2042 when BCV expires. You might be sick of Disney, at which point an expiring financial obligation will be perfect. Or the product could change to the point where we're all disgusted with it and no one wants it anymore with the exception of a very few. I wish we had bought BWV. Sure, we could buy it now, but we have enough points and I'm not interested in selling/buying to reshuffle what we have at this point, so here we are.

You should buy him that telescope! When I was a pre-teen my dad bought me a 10-inch Dobsonian telescope and I have many fond memories with it over the years. I'm an accountant now so this story doesn't end with me discovering the mythical Planet X beyond Pluto or anything like that as a result of the purchase, but still.

Thanks for this. Stalking the BCV at 7 months would be me exactly!

@CastAStone I appreciate your comments as well. So, from what I understand, find a BCV resale to lock in use year and then add a small direct contract later (if I decide I need blue card benefits)?

I tend to see it differently.

agreed that 2042 will come sooner than 2060 however I’d much prefer to enjoy 20+ years of vacations at a location that I prefer and like compared to a location which I just find okay.

in November- December you need to own where you stay as the rooms are booked very fast. Depending on your dates in February you could have the same issue.

VGF and BLT are fine resorts too but if you prefer BCV that is where you should buy. Buying VGF of BLT and trying to book BCV with those points will most likely give you headaches and no room.

My two kids are not adults yet but we recently bought Riv in two 100 point contracts with intention to eventually add one adult kid to each contract.
