Bathroom Floor - What would you do?

I'm going to have my extra bathroom wallpapered soon and want to do a few other things.

The floor is carpet  - Great in a bathroom, we've been here a year and it's already nasty.

I was thinking of just pulling up the carpet and painting the cement. I might have watched Trading Spaces too many times but they've done this and it seems to work out okay. I would add a throw rug but get rid of the wall-to-wall carpet.

Some day when I can afford it I want to do Pergo or something to all the rooms downstairs so this would be a temporary solution unless I decide to keep it that way instead of doing the wood floor in there.

Anyone ever paint a cement floor? Does it sound crazy?

We did that in the den, painted the cement. It's a bit more involved then you would think but it's easy to do. After ripping up the carpet you have to fill up the small nail holes with that cement stuff. We put a primer on first to make sure the color would take and not bleed too much in to the concrete. We then painted with rollers the color we wanted. We also painted a design in certain areas and around the trim. We then put several coats of polyurethane on the floor with rollers but I still need to go back and put several more coats on so it will shine more. Not bad for beginners. I was lucky to find a rug that had similar designs on it that we painted on the floor.
One more thing we did but you may not need to, depends on your concrete - We took sand paper to some of the rough spots before we put the primer on. The main thing is to put a lot of polyurethane on, I think we did 4 coats but probably need to ad two more.

My sister did that when she got rid of all her carpet and could not afford to tile it right away. I never saw it, but she said it worked out fine for the time she had it.

What about going to a tile center and find tile that is being discontinued which won't cost a bunch a tile it yourself? Bathrooms aren't that huge that it should not cost a fortune.

Good luck! Have fun with whatever you do!

My brother painted the floor (cement?) in his garage. The only problem he has is that shoes sometimes leave scuff marks on it. It looks nice though.

We put epoxy paint in our hot tub room. It's a two part mix, then you paint it on with a roller and (if you want) throw included paint chips in complementary colors around to make it look like terazzo tile. It really looks pretty cool!

As far as I know, it comes in two colors....

Gray (with white, black and blue chips)

Tan (with white, black and green chips)

Cost is about $50 for the kit. Ours turned out really nice. I think it's actually garage floor paint that the kit is marketed for.

This said, I too would recommend looking for a tile that is being clearanced out. We tiled all of our bathrooms and our kitchen and we love it!

Good luck!

Thanks everyone.

Sounds like it would work okay.

The reason not to do tile is that I don't want to do anything that I might need to change if I redo the floors in the other rooms. If I do a Pergo or laminate floor in the rooms around the bath I'll probably do it there also. Painting would be something I can put another floor over easily later.

Another option is peel & stick tile. It's like sheet vinyl except in 12" x 12" squares, and DW put it down in our bathroom a couple of years ago. It goes down pretty easy and the tiles are easy to cut with a utility knife. Just make sure the subfloor is leveled out -- you might have to smooth out any peaks and use a leveling compound on any valleys.

They had a segment of this on HGTV and it looked pretty good when they did it. it was on a new house they built, they did this for the kitchen and family room.
