Bathrobe and slippers

Maybe it is regional. We are in upstate NY and I would never wear my shoes in someone's house. I would imagine any place I have been the bottom of my shoes would be dirty, and we do deal with snow and sludge 7 months of the year...
Just habit as it has always been that way. We don't think twice about it. Everyone we interact with (except my in-laws) take their shoes off at the door. I have even had girlfriends bring their slippers.

Lived there for 15 years and this was our experience too. You don't ask people to take off their shoes, it's just automatic. You expect that you will remove your shoes whenever you enter someone's home, and yes it was common for people to carry slippers or fuzzy socks if they were coming over for dinner (many people just kept a pair in their car).

We just moved to NC over the summer and we are adjusting to the norm of shoe wearing indoors. We have racks and don't wear them in our own home, but it seems that almost everyone else does. I have just accepted that this is the norm here, although I admit it does bother me a bit.

I grew up in a home where shoes were forbidden (my mother is a clean freak), but DH's family are the type who take their shoes off only as they are getting into bed.

You make it sound like we knock them down in the doorway, and pry their shoes off.

We don't wear nice shoes outside (like TOMS) when it is nasty because they would get ruined. We don't wear dirty shoes in the house as it would get dirty.
This cracked me up...ha ha ha

Houses get dirty regardless of if shoes are on or not.

Do you all sanatize your houses daily? I must be a germ freak but I cannot imangine shoes that have been worn on an airplane or in a bathroom up on furniture.

I vacuum, sweep and mop twice a week, carpets get steam cleaned once a month, does that count??

Nope you are not a germ freak, just they way you do things.

You would turn a fit in my house, dirt is just dirt, nothing wrong with a bit of dirt, bugs, spiders, snakes, all the norm in this house :)

I was in my robe and slippers until 2 pm today. It was a lazy day and I was enjoying my Christmas gifts and reading the instructions on one of them.

And I ate candy.

No shoes in my house. I would never ask guests to remove theirs but I do cringe when they don't:rotfl: I have ceramic tile in the kitchen/dining area and then carpet and hardwood throughout the rest. I work really hard to keep it clean and it just seems natural to me to take shoes off when coming through the door..not only for cleanliness but also for comfort :)

I love my comfy robes especially in the winter. I also love when they have nice terry robes in hotels even though they are always huge on me.

Slippers I wear when I remeber. I often just wear socks...fuzzy ones in the winter. DH never goes without slippers.

We don't wear shoes in the house.

I get that going "shoeless" in a home is a regional practise largely based on the climate and weather conditions. It would be absolutely ABSURD for guests where I live to enter a house wearing their wet, salty, snowboots - which are our primary footware for at least 5 months of the year.

For those of you who DO wear shoes inside though, I've always wondered about this:

I've seen this kind of damage and would be absolutely :furious::sad: if anyone did this to my floors. Nor could I live with myself if I did it to someone else's.

Yes! Pink flamingo slippers, when I got our fla home, Yeah! N my robes are sets to the camisole type nightdresses. I don't have any of those heavy type. However, got one of those heavy types as a Xmas gift for ds, for the pool!

I wear a robe after getting out of the shower and before getting dressed. I like to wait a bit before putting on clothes after a shower. In the winter, I'll often put on my robe for extra warmth in the house. I wear warm booties in the cold months, otherwise no slippers.

This. It's regional custom for a reason. It's -35 here. Most people are not going out wearing cute little dressy boots. They are wearing big clunky Sorels or that sort of thing. It would be hot and uncomfortable to wear them into someone's house.

You can't compare wearing sneakers and flip flops year round in the southern US to Canadian shoe wearing habits. My guess is most people in North Dakota take off their shoes in the house too.

I like to cuddle on the couch with my feet curled up. That would just be uncomfortable with shoes on.

As for bathrobes I wear one in the mornings. I despise getting dressed right out of the shower and don't unless its a big rush. My usual routine is wake up, shower, put on robe, blow dry hair, go downstairs, fix lunch bags/put on coffee/eat breakfast, wake kids, get their breakfasts, then go pick out my outfit and do my makeup while kids eat.

I have a fluffy robe I wear in the winter right after I shower, and walking to my bedroom down the hall, then I get dressed. (And no, no one in my family dresses in the bathroom, it's smallish, and regardless of the size, easier to just get dressed in our rooms)
I have slippers, the ones that are like clogs I guess, but soft. I wear them in the winter from time to time. They do have a hard bottom, so if I have to run out to pick up the kids or something I'll run out wearing them, if I don't feel like putting shoes on.

In warmer weather no robes, no slippers. My husband and son don't own either, my daughter wears her robe same as I do, and wears slippers often-she has the Uggs and wears them out and about.

As for shoes in the house-if it's wet/muddy/dirty outside we take them off as soon as we get inside.
There is no rule about shoes in the house, we all generally take them off within a few minutes of coming home, but it's for comfort, not cleanliness.

I do not sanitize my floors, I vacuum a few times a week, sweep less often and mop even less often than that..
I have a dog, so even if we had everyone take off their shoes, she's still tracking in dirt, I guess. And no, I don't wipe her paws off before letting her in the house.

No one puts their feet up on the furniture with shoes on.

The only shoes I don't allow in my house are the kids cleats during football and softball/baseball season. They have to take them off in the foyer on the tile.

We only have carpet/Vinyl and tiles, so no hard wood for us, heels would definitely be a no no if we did have hard wood floors...would sooooo love them though.

No shoes on the couch in this house either, would damage the couch.

If someone above the age of 10 put their dirty shoes on my furniture I'd freak.
I'm not picky about the shoes on/off thing regarding guests though. If you want to remove them fine, if not, that's fine too.

I wear a robe after the shower to do my hair and makeup.
No slippers though. I don't even like wearing socks half of the time.

We all wear slippers but bathrobes....not so much. The only one who has one is my son and he only uses it for when he is at a swim meet and he gets out of the pool.

I have both, tend to use the robe after a shower or if i'm staying as someones house. I wear slippers all the time

We have hardwood floors that are cold in the winter so both DH and I wear slippers. If I don't my feet get so cold that they cramp. I even keep a pair of slippers for my sister who is a frequent visitor. My 5 year old nephew won't wear slippers so he slip/slides in his socks on our floors.

We have bathrobes that we wear prior to getting dressed in the morning or if we have a lazy weekend day. I also wear it if I have to answer the door and I am not dressed yet.

do you wear these? They seem to be popular Christmas gifts but I wonder how many people use them. I do not.

Nope. I will occasionally pull out a robe if I am crafting/crocheting and I'm cold and I can't find a sweatshirt. But normally if I get chilly I just pull out a sweater or sweatshirt. For shoes in the house I have a pair of non-slip "Mary Janes" that I actually got when I worked as a server. They are slip ons and have a lot of support which is what I need when I am running around cooking and cleaning. They also don't slip on the ice outside when I take garbage out or check the mail.

I use slippers every day in the winter. I use my bathrobe a couple times a week when I decide to get in jammies but still plan to be up around the house for awhile. My bathrobe isn't the type you'd wear when wet, it's a thick one meant to be worn over jammies.

Our floors are all tile and hardwood, so I do wear slippers in the winter because the floor is cold (especially the tile).

I have a thick terry rode, but almost never use it.

Yep we do! We take off our shoes year round. In summer, the dust outside is crazy (I guess from the crops and farming). In the spring it is slushy and gross with melting snow. In the fall and winter it is snowy and the sand/salt they put down everywhere will totally ruin carpet. We have a special carpet runner just for winter that is ruined with salt and sand. And you can't keep a mat outside really - it gets icy and useless. Here it is just natural to take off shoes everywhere and I have a large collection of cute and kitschy socks so that my feet still look good at other peoples houses. ;)

Guess I'm in the minority, but I wear a bathrobe daily - I don't get dressed right away when I'm done showering so will wear my robe while getting ready.

I also wear my robe in the evenings to keep warm in the fall/winter. I have a lighter robe for the summer that's more for modesty's sake in front of my son, lol.
